Today's job market seems to be taking a turn for the better, but it's still not as strong for candidates as it has been in recent years. But it's not impossible, says Tessa White, a career coach with 20 years of HR experience and founder of The Job Doctor. Negotiating a job offer successfully comes down to one thing, she says: Job-seekers "better be crystal clear on their value proposition." But this can limit your value proposition and later negotiations because "your leverage is in your outcomes," White says. Tessa White HR expert

Obama in past campaigns has relished mocking and criticizing Trump, but his speech and delivery on Thursday were stinging and unusually visceral. Grab your friends and family and vote,” Obama said. “If you challenge Trump to elaborate and enumerate his ‘concepts,’ he will fall back on one answer,” Obama said. His message there was also pointed – but directed at Black men. “We need to make sure that Black men, Hispanic men, don’t sit on the couch.

You don't need to know exactly how you'll use your retirement savings — instead, focus on timing. I recently spoke with my financial planner, Liz Schieck, about investing and saving for retirement. I asked her what she's hearing from clients, particularly millennials and Gen Z clients, about best practices. Current trends around investing and retirementMany new clients at Schieck's firm first reach out because they want to discuss saving for retirement. Schieck believes that you don't always have to know what you're saving for.

Pittsburgh CNN —In the years that Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dave McCormick led one of the world’s largest hedge funds, the firm bet millions of dollars against some of the state’s biggest and most iconic companies, financial filings show. For financial institutions, short positions can be lucrative. The fund shorted about four dozen companies from Pennsylvania during McCormick’s tenure, the records show. The fund did invest in stocks of some of the same Pennsylvania companies it shorted in other years, and overall, it reported spending more money buying stocks of Pennsylvania companies than shorting them in four of the five annual reports reviewed by CNN. She argued that the short positions Bridgewater took in Pennsylvania companies didn’t negatively impact employees because they represented a small fraction of each company’s overall value.

Salary negotiation advice tends to focus on leaning in, presenting evidence of your competence, and emphasizing that what you want is not only reasonable, but earned. All of this is sound guidance, but doesn't touch on what might be the most effective skill for upping your salary: asking questions. In her recent TED Talk, United Nations negotiation trainer Alex Carter says this is the "one negotiation technique that most of us are not using." "Bottom line, in negotiation you get more by asking questions than you do by arguing," Carter says. "Curious people make more money."

“Did the Fed even need to cut rates in September, let alone cut by 50bps (basis points)?” Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management, wrote in a note on Friday. Second-guessing the Fed isn’t new, of course. Central bank officials themselves note the uncertainty inherent in their work, especially when the economy reaches inflection points. Even Fed officials don’t always agree with the central bank’s actions, such as Fed Governor Michelle Bowman, the lone dissenter to the Fed’s decision to cut rates by half a point in September. ‘This isn’t exact science’Fed officials aren’t shy about admitting that they don’t always have confidence in how the US economy will evolve.

Andy Jassy is thinking long-termThe recent return-to-office mandate requiring employees to work from the office five days a week is tricky. I think Jassy is thinking long-term, which is one of the core features of Amazon's leadership principles: long-term thinking. The third leadership principle I think Jassy is enforcing is frugality. The principle says that leaders work daily to create a safer, more productive, higher-performing, and diverse work environment. I think Jassy looks at this and says, "That is what I am doing."

CNN —All signs suggest that the partisan divide over changing gender roles in society could widen even further in the 2024 election, adding a new source of uncertainty to a contest already on a knife’s edge. That was only the latest example of his campaign signaling its support for traditional gender roles. “The messaging on gender coming out of the campaign broadly is very much about reaffirming traditional roles for women and for men,” Cassese said. In PRRI polling this year, nearly half of Republicans agreed with two absolutist statements about gender roles. His problem is that most voters outside the core GOP coalition are generally comfortable with the changes in gender roles and family dynamics since the “Father Knows Best” era in the 1950s.

According to a simulated model that factors in things like changes in health, nursing home costs, and demographics, about 45% of Americans who leave the workforce at 65 are likely to run out of money during retirement. When you have more leisure time on your hands, more money goes toward entertainment and travel, especially in the first few years of retirement. The outcome is a higher withdrawal rate, which can push you into a higher tax bracket, he noted. But it’s something politicians have struggled with achieving on their own — particularly amid an election cycle in which many young voters find themselves jaded with politics as a whole. Self-compassionate touch, which can be practiced anywhere, can include stroking the upper arms like a hug. Milko/E+/Getty ImagesThe study showed a single 20-second session of self-compassionate touch significantly reduced stress, increased kindness to the participant and improved mental well-being. However, Hafeez noted that while self-compassionate touch showed similar mental health benefits to long-term therapy, it is not a complete substitute for it — especially among those with diagnosed mental health conditions. Instead, she advised people to think of self-compassionate touch as an added tool for their mental health toolbox. The study results showed the more people make self-compassionate touch a habit, the greater the mental health benefits.

While hot water is going to give you the best clean, using it often isn't necessary or good for your laundry. But there are ways to get an extra good clean without always using hot water. Plus, you reduce your energy usage by 90% when you stop using hot water to clean clothes.

CNN —In some corners of society, there appears to be a shift in the way people talk about kids. Every so often, a provocative social media post sets off predictably polarizing discourse about the presence of children in daily life. The implication (joking or otherwise) is that children are a nuisance and adults shouldn’t have to endure them if they don’t want to. The people behind them aren’t part of some organized movement nor are they actually lobbying for the exclusion of children from public spaces. Rather, Berg understands online disdain for kids partly as a performative response to rhetoric from political and religious conservatives.
