Pope Francis meets with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Studio of Paul VI Hall on May 13, 2023 in Vatican City, Vatican. Francis, using a cane for his knee problem, came to greet the Ukrainian president before ushering him into a papal studio near the Vatican's audience hall. And he said he asked Francis to come aboard Ukraine's peace plan. "I also talked about our Peace Formula as the only effective algorithm for achieving a just peace,″ Zelenskyy said. Zelenskyy, who also met Italian President Sergio Mattarella, is a one-day trip in Rome, including an audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican.

Tawadros, dressed in black robes, was the guest of honour at Francis' general audience in a rainy St. Peter's Square. In his greeting to Tawadros, Francis recalled the 20 Egyptian Copts who were kidnapped and beheaded on a beach in Libya by Islamic State in 2015. Copts comprise about 10 percent of Egypt's mostly Muslim population and there are small Coptic Christian communities throughout the Middle East and Africa. Coptic Orthodox Christians trace their origins to St. Mark the Apostle. Tawadros is due to have a private meeting with Francis on Thursday and visit the Vatican department that promotes Christian unity.

Public-sector workers on strike in Ottawa last week. The Public Service Alliance of Canada went on strike starting April 19, seeking a 13.5% wage increase over three years. The deal affects about 120,000 employees, who help process immigration and passport applications and deliver jobless benefits to the unemployed. The agreement doesn’t cover about 30,000 workers at Canada’s tax-collection agency. Employees there remain on strike, and the dispute is expected to affect the processing of tax returns that were due Sunday, officials say.

Some Americans are considering selling their Canadian property. One member of Congress, representing western New York state, is pushing the Biden administration to file a trade complaint under the terms of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade treaty, or at least to persuade Canada to carve out an exemption for Americans.
Change in remote statusSome Amazon employees hired during the pandemic said they were promised permanent remote work, through what they saw as a "handshake agreement." One employee shared their vice president's email in the Slack channel, saying this manager was willing to be more flexible. People walk into the lobby of Amazon offices in New York. Over 30,000 Amazon employees joined an internal Slack channel shortly after the RTO announcement and signed a petition to demand a reversal of the mandate. "Amazon, oh Amazon, why are you making this issue so difficult?"

Bank of Canada Gov. Tiff Macklem told lawmakers this week that annual wage growth needs to slow from its current level. Photo: David Kawai/Bloomberg NewsOTTAWA—About 150,000 Canadian government workers went on strike early Wednesday, in a dispute over wage increases that could have implications on efforts by the country’s central bank to sharply slow inflation. The Public Service Alliance of Canada is seeking wage gains of 13.5% over a three-year period, or roughly 4.5% a year. Union leadership said this would help offset the sharp acceleration in inflation in Canada and the rest of the developed world since the initial wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, due to a combination of supply-chain constraints, stronger-than-expected consumer demand, and the war in Ukraine’s impact on commodity prices.

Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said the decision comes a day after Twitter labeled its @CBC account as “government-funded media.” Twitter defines such outlets as those that rely mostly on government funding to carry out operations “and may have varying degrees of government involvement over editorial content.”

OTTAWA—President Biden, making his first trip as president to Canada, said a robust U.S. industrial policy based on producing clean technology, electric vehicles and semiconductors would benefit workers on both sides of the northern border as he joined with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau . Mr. Biden used an address to the Canadian Parliament to promote their commitment to defending Ukraine in its war against Russia, and future possibilities for workers through the new healthcare and climate change law called the Inflation Reduction Act, and another law to promote semiconductor manufacturing.
