A Chicago man has been charged with 14 felonies after allegedly shooting a Jewish man who was on his way to a local synagogue. But some community leaders are questioning why hate crime charges have not been filed. Snelling said that there wasn't enough evidence to add hate crime charges to the list but said it remained a possibility. "A man wearing the kippah as he walked to synagogue was shot and this has just escalated our anxieties." But I think it’s equally important to understand that whether or not there is a hate crime charge, that’s a technicality.

DNA testing has revealed that a skull found decades ago in the wall of an Illinois house belonged to an 18-year-old woman who died just after the American Civil War. How did the skull end up in a wall in Illinois when Granger's body was buried in Indiana? "Grave robbing was quite common in that era as it was quite profitable. While the practice was illegal, the law forbidding grave robbing was not always enforced, Russell said. It was hugely controversial as a result, with riots and even murders of alleged perpetrators following some suspected grave robbing incidents.

Are we living through another Lamar Jackson MVP season? The Bears defense has also been phenomenal and will keep them in games even when Williams will inevitably struggle, as all rookies do. Full disclosure: One of my bold predictions entering the season was that Rattler would wind up taking Derek Carr’s job this season. The bigger concern is the Saints’ defense, which surrendered 600 yards and 50 points and allowed the Bucs to convert 6 of 10 third downs. It doesn’t matter who plays quarterback — the Saints defense has to put up some resistance.

Two American scientists were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology on Monday for their groundbreaking work on how genes behave. Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun discovered microRNA, which the Nobel Assembly describes as "a fundamental principle governing how gene activity is regulated." The tiny microRNA molecules play a crucial role in determining how different cells — which have the same chromosomes, essentially their instruction manual — have different characteristics. "The answer lies in gene regulation, which allows each cell to select only the relevant instructions," the Nobel announcement said. But subsequent work, including the discovery of another microRNA in 2000, proved that there are more than a thousand genes for different microRNAs in humans.
