On Tuesday, as a series of aggressive wildfires began ripping through Southern California, I found myself having an unlikely reaction: the desire to be there. I mean this not as a thrill seeker or fire follower but rather as someone who wanted to go home. I have lived in Los Angeles since 1991, when I moved from New York. My wife and I raised our family in Los Angeles, and in June my father entered an assisted-living facility in Pasadena, not far from what is now the Eaton fire evacuation zone. This is my father’s first go-round as a California resident, and he is right to be afraid.

One night in December 2019, Emma Louthan realized in a mild panic that she needed a gift for a child’s birthday party the next day. She grabbed acrylic paint and some of her daughter’s old clothes and began creating an aquatic scene: pink koi swimming beneath white and green water lilies. The birthday boy wasn’t much impressed by the artful present, but it planted a seed in Ms. Louthan’s mind. A few months later, she tried her hand at a collection of about a dozen hand-painted adult sweatshirts and found a more appreciative audience. It was the beginning of Covid lockdowns, and Ms. Louthan, an artist in Philadelphia who graduated from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture, was working as a freelance textile designer while at home with her husband and 1-year-old daughter.

“Within minutes, 10 to 20 minutes, there wasn’t one fire. There were multiple fires, as embers were sort of crisscrossing the area,” Hurwitz told MSNBC’s Chris Jansing on Wednesday. Hurwitz packed up a few more possessions, including clothes, a laptop, and the family’s pets: a rescue dog, Lily, and a hamster, Wolfy. CNN —At least 10 Jewish homes and businesses around Paris and a synagogue in the northern French city of Rouen have been defaced, according to police, with antisemitism being considered as a motive. The acts of vandalism came as France marked 10 years since the Paris terrorist attacks that shook the country. A rabbi’s home and a synagogue in Rouen were also targeted with antisemitic messages and swastikas scrawled on the buildings. French interior minister Bruno Retailleau denounced the vandalism targeting the French Jewish community, and the growing antisemitism. “The Jewish community represents less than 1% of the population, and is the victim of 57% of all anti-religious attacks,” Retailleau told French media Tuesday.

It has long been a local article of faith: Southern California disasters are rarely as sweeping as they seem. Delaware and Rhode Island could fit, with room to spare, in Los Angeles County. A drive from Pacific Palisades to Pasadena takes nearly an hour, even without traffic. When the Los Angeles riots erupted in 1992, Americans recoiled at the fires silhouetting the downtown skyline. Not shown were the jacaranda-lined streets and placid suburbs where the rest of Southern California watched the mayhem on TV.

CNN —The Israeli military has enlisted the first batch of about 50 recruits into its new ultra-Orthodox brigade after a controversial decision to end their decades-long exemption from service. By the end of the day, about 100 additional ultra-Orthodox recruits will be enlisted for reserve service, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Sunday. In June, the Supreme Court ruled that ultra-Orthodox Jews could not be exempt from military service, as they had been since the founding of Israel. The vast majority of ultra-Orthodox Jews do not participate in the country’s mandatory military service. The Israeli military said Sunday it would enlist more recruits throughout the month to join those already recruited in basic training.

The Summary A new paper describes a test that can differentiate between different types of asthma via a nasal swab. The research focused on Black and Puerto Rican children, who have higher rates of asthma and asthma-related deaths than white children. The research builds on previous studies that have similarly detected asthma via nasal swabs. Celedón said the nasal swab test could help researchers identify people with T2-low asthma for the purpose of enrolling them in studies that test new treatments for that target. “The place to be cautious is, does it make sense to treat based on this?” she said, referring to the nasal swab test results.
