“The IOC will reallocate the bronze medal to Ana Bǎrbosu (Romania),” the statement said. But her coach, Cecile Landi, submitted an inquiry to challenge the difficulty score Chiles had received. The court agreed, invalidating Chiles’ score, and the International Gymnastics Federation, known as FIG, then announced that it had officially changed the ranking of the competition, putting Chiles back in fifth place. “The inquiry into the Difficulty Value of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring,” the statement said. These weren’t spies or drug test collectors. They are the staff of the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. And to collect items that tell the stories of the Paris Games, they needed to be everywhere. There were 32 sports and 329 medal events crammed into two weeks. So museum staff members fanned out as history happened to gather mementos: a gymnast’s leotard, a fencer’s saber, a Grand Slam tournament champion’s tennis racket, an opening ceremony outfit.

The last two races of the Paris Games were a gold rush for the U.S., with both the women and men dominating the 4x400-meter relays Saturday. A three-time gold medalist after wins in the 200-meter and 4x100-meter relay, Thomas helped widen the gap in the third lap that McLaughlin-Levrone created in the second. In the last lap, it came down to a race between two gold medalists: Benjamin and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo. With the victory, 16-year-old Quincy Wilson — who ran earlier in the week for the U.S. but not in the final — is now the youngest Olympic track-and-field gold medalist ever. He is also the youngest male U.S. Olympic gold medalist in any sport since 1952.

Unlike the ambitious opening ceremony, the closing ceremony will take a more traditional route. Rather than the open-air venue of the Seine River, the closing ceremony will be held in the 80,000-seat Stade de France. What time does the Olympic closing ceremony start? Similar to the opening ceremony, many details about the closing ceremony have been kept under wraps. Swimmer Katie Ledecky and rower Nick Mead will be the flag bearers during the closing ceremony.

At Paris 2024, Taiwan’s red and blue flag is banned, as is the name “Taiwan” and its anthem. Security staff confiscated a "Taiwan" towel from a fan during the men's doubles badminton semi-final last week. Taiwan is a self-governing democracy that competes as “Chinese Taipei,” an attempt to participate in the Olympics without angering mainland China. CAS said it’s now up to the International Gymnastics Federation to determine how medals should be reassigned given the ruling. GO DEEPER How a score inquiry led to gymnast Jordan Chiles' Olympic bronzeThe appeal by the Romanian federation requested all three athletes be placed in third and allocated medals, the court said in its release. After Chiles finished her routine, Bărbosu beamed and held the Romanian flag to celebrate winning bronze, unaware that Chiles’ coach had submitted an inquiry. Upon seeing the changed score, Chiles began screaming in celebration. Before Chiles’ inquiry, Bărbosu and Maneca-Voinea were tied for third with identical scores of 13.700.

The farrago of a sport that is the modern pentathlon owes its rarefied existence to Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympics, who, according to legend, imagined it as a test of mettle for a typical French cavalry officer. Caught behind enemy lines, such a man might have to fence with and shoot at his pursuers; run toward safety; swim across a body of water; and ride away on a random horse he happened to encounter. But many things that made sense in the 19th century seem less persuasive in the 21st. So, drifting toward obsolescence and facing eviction from the Olympics after an accusation of horse abuse in the Tokyo Games, modern pentathlon’s governing body voted in 2021 to overhaul itself for the contemporary era. While the pentathletes at the Paris Games are indeed riding horses over a series of jumps as part of the event, they will face an entirely different fifth discipline when they get to Los Angeles in 2028: a race the organizers are calling a “‘Ninja Warrior’-style obstacle course.”

The U.S. women’s 4×400 relay team, the final track event at an epic Olympics, blazed to the gold medal with a time of 3:15.27. Shamier Little, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Gabby Thomas and Alexis Holmes put together a dominant performance illustrative of American track and field’s dominance in the 33rd Olympiad. It doubled the gold medal count from the Tokyo Games when it took home 26 total medals. Thomas won her third gold medal of these games: one in the 200-meter hurdles, and two as the third leg in both relays. McLaughlin-Levrone secured her second gold medal, joining Thomas and Rai Benjamin as the Americans in track and field with multiple golds.

People are tuning in to watch athletes who showcase their personalities and are entertaining on social media. Gen Z, in particular, is predominately following the Paris Games on social media, which is driving the greater emphasis on social media coverage compared to past Olympics, Cacres said. "[Social media] has made it so much easier to consume the Olympic content, which I feel wasn't the case back a few years ago," she said.

Just moments after the American wrestler Sarah Hildebrandt won a gold medal at the Paris Games, she let the whole world know what she was thinking:“Oh my gosh I just won the FREAKING OLYMPICS hahahahah DUUUUDE,” she wrote on social media from the event venue. But at the Olympics, it’s part of a new twist — and one of the keys to returning to the sense of a shared national experience that defined the Games of yesteryear. For the last decade or more, it has seemed like the Olympics have struggled to capture relevance the way they did a generation ago. Blame was assigned to a fracturing media landscape and a long string of asterisks (pandemic restrictions in Tokyo, time zone issues in Beijing, a Zika outbreak in Rio de Janeiro, geopolitical tensions in Sochi). But the reason may have been simpler: The Olympics has largely been missing from social media.

The long-distance runner is looking to write one more chapter in the history books with a record-breaking third Olympic marathon win, at the Paris Games. The sun is yet to rise, but a group of runners emerge from a mud path onto the side of a road. This is what Olympic preparation looks like for arguably the greatest distance runner of all time, Eliud Kipchoge. In 2019, in Vienna, he shattered one of the most formidable barriers in sports by becoming the first person to run a marathon in under two hours. With the Games upon us, Kipchoge remains laser-focused on clinching his third consecutive gold medal in the marathon.

Despite a late push, she could not help her side finally overcome a USWNT in a gold medal match. After a cagey first half of today’s final, Swanson finally found space beyond the back line to break open a deadlocked match. It was a sequence worth of winning a gold medal and a fine way to mark a player’s 100th cap. But now, with a gold medal tucked under her arm, she definitely has the cachet to make whatever changes she wants. Hayes led the U.S. to its fifth Olympic gold medal.

We are drawn to stories of individuals who not only embody the pursuit of excellence, but also have humility. Perhaps the most iconic image from these Games occurred after one of the few gymnastics events she didn’t completely dominate, the individual floor competition. In the stands, supporting and helping to coach him, was Renaud Lavillenie, the Frenchman whose world record Duplantis first broke in 2020. Then there was the American sprinter Noah Lyles, who earned the title of world’s fastest man by winning gold in the 100-meter dash. Shortly after, he wrote in a social media message to fans: “I have asthma, allergies, dyslexia, A.D.D., anxiety, and depression.

Female athletes of color have historically faced disproportionate scrutiny and discrimination when it comes to sex testing and false accusations that they are male or transgender. Since the Tokyo Games in 2021, track’s World Athletics tightened the eligibility rules for female athletes with DSD conditions. Male athletes are not required to regulate their natural levels of testosterone, and female athletes who do not have DSD conditions also can benefit. In this dysfunction, boxing eligibility rules have not kept pace with other sports, and the issues weren’t addressed ahead of the Paris Games. MyKayla Skinner posted a video to Instagram on Tuesday calling on Simone Biles to stop her 11.8 million followers from “cyberbullying” her after Biles appeared to clapback at comments by Skinner. “To Simone, I am asking you directly and publicly to please put a stop to this," Skinner said in Tuesday's video. A few days after her comments in June, Skinner posted an apology on social media. After Biles' Instagram post last week, Skinner reportedly blocked the 11-time Olympic medalist on social media, according to an Instagram story posted by Chiles and a post on X by Biles. PARIS — Lighting the Olympic cauldron symbolically opened these Games — and, as much as possible, might have also taken a torch to some awful pandemic memories. The past two Games were staged in bubbles in and around Beijing and Tokyo as Covid was still a factor. And while some athletes have tested positive for Covid during the Paris Games, they have not upended competition. The Olympic medals have come in a flurry for Ukraine in recent days: golds at the track and on the fencing piste, a silver in gymnastics, two other bronzes. “It’s a time to celebrate and think not about the war,” Mykhailo Kokhan, 23, a member of Ukraine’s national guard, said after winning a bronze in the men’s hammer throw on Sunday. The Paris Games have been a welcome respite for a country where at least one bakery sells pastries shaped like anti-tank obstacles and there is now deep uncertainty over the nation’s sporting future. Ukraine’s 140 Olympians have shown remarkable perseverance since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, preparing for the Paris Games either in other, safer nations, or at home to the grim soundtrack of air-raid alerts and missile attacks. American sprinter Gabby Thomas won her first Olympic gold medal in the 2024 Paris Games women's 200-meter final on Tuesday — an accomplishment that she credits, in part, to her second job. The 27-year-old, who took home bronze and silver during her Olympic debut at the Tokyo games, balances her career as an Olympian with a job in health care. Thomas holds a bachelor's degree in neurobiology from Harvard University and a master's degree in public health from the University of Texas Health Science Center. In the months leading up to the Games, Thomas trained three to six hours a day, but at night, she worked at an Austin volunteer health-care clinic for people without insurance. "I think I'm just so grateful to get to do what I love," Thomas told Olympics.com.
