Trump’s Las Vegas crowd size: In his latest exaggeration about crowd sizes, Trump claimed there were “29,000 people” at his event the night prior. Foreign policyTrump and ISIS: Repeating one of his regular false claims, Trump said, “We defeated ISIS in record time. “Just to both of us getting frustrated.”Therein lies the problem: Gentle parenting is proving to be too hard on many parents. One study published in July found that over 40% of self-identified gentle parents teeter toward burnout and self-doubt because of the pressure to meet parenting standards. A wave of think pieces called gentle parenting “too gentle” of a practice that required a parent to turn into a “self-renouncing, perpetually present humanoid.”The gentle parenting philosophy, said Pezalla, is largely a social media trend with no scholarship to back it up. Enter gentle parenting. In theory, gentle parenting has great values to apply to parenting practices — speak kindly and honor connections.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump continues to repeat his lie that US schools are sending children for gender-affirming surgeries without their parents’ consent — even though his own presidential campaign could not find a single example of this having happened. Without parental consent.” He added, “At first, when I was told that was actually happening, I said, you know, it’s an exaggeration. There is no evidence that schools in any part of the United States have sent children for gender-affirming surgeries without their parents’ approval, or performed unapproved gender-affirming surgeries on site; none of that is “allowed” anywhere in the country. Even in the states where gender-affirming surgery is legal for people under age 18, parental consent is required before a minor can undergo such a procedure. Texas is preparing to put a man to death Thursday in what would be the nation’s first execution involving a case of “shaken baby syndrome,” a diagnosis that has been re-evaluated in more recent years, leading to the overturning of similar convictions. Prosecutors argued that Nikki must have been shaken to death because she had been diagnosed with “the triad” — a swollen and bleeding brain and retinal hemorrhaging — symptoms once believed to be indisputable evidence of shaken baby syndrome. In 2009, the American Academy of Pediatrics changed the name of shaken baby syndrome to the more broadly defined “abusive head trauma” to include injuries caused by mechanisms other than shaking alone. It is now medical consensus that other medical conditions, including infections, accidental trauma and pre-existing illnesses, can also cause the symptoms associated with shaken baby syndrome. Hundreds of possible shaken baby and abusive head trauma cases are reported to hospitals in the U.S. every year, according to a nonprofit advocacy group.

The maximum annual contribution for 2024 is $7,000 or the total of the child's earned income for the year — whichever is less. For instance, if a 16-year-old works at a coffee shop and earns $4,000 over the summer, that $4,000 qualifies as earned income. One measure on the ballot in New York state this November means two very different things to its supporters and its opponents. Advocates of the measure argue that it is simply a way to codify New Yorkers’ right to reproductive care. The Coalition to Protect Kids-NY has taken to calling the measure the “Parent Replacement Act.” The group argues that the measure would be used to strip rights from parents and push transgender rights for minors, in particular. The coalition's website includes no articles or other information about the ballot measure seeking to codify a right to abortion. Hochul’s office has helped lead the state’s Democratic Party to spend over $1 million to advertise in favor of the measure, including local ads, campaign yard signs and mailers.

LONDON — British employees are set to gain a slew of employment benefits under flagship legislation put forward by the new Labour government on Thursday, including stronger rights to sick pay and an entitlement to take paternity leave from the first day in a job. Workers will also be eligible to take unpaid parental or bereavement leave from day one of a job, and to claim statutory sick pay from the first day when they are unwell, rather than the fourth. Starmer said on social platform X the reforms would be the "biggest upgrade to workers' rights in a generation." It is one of the first major pieces of legislation set out by the Labour government, which took office in July. Starmer and Finance Minister Rachel Reeves are also preparing to deliver their first budget at the end of the month.

Fourteen attorneys general, led by officials in New York and California, filed lawsuits Tuesday accusing the social media platform TikTok of damaging young users’ mental health and collecting their data without consent. “Young people are struggling with their mental health because of addictive social media platforms like TikTok,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement. In recent years, a growing number of health professionals have sounded the alarm about the effects of excessive social media use on mental and physical health, particularly among children and teenagers. Earlier this year, the Senate Judiciary Committee grilled the CEOs of TikTok, Meta and X during a hearing about online child safety and youth mental health. But the service’s rise has been shadowed by concerns about mental health, as well as national security.

New York CNN —A bipartisan group of 14 attorneys general from across the country filed lawsuits on Tuesday against TikTok, alleging that the platform has “addicted” young people and harmed their mental health. And last month, 42 state attorneys general called on US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to require labels on social media apps warning of their potential harm to young users. It also alleges that TikTok “challenges,” viral trends where users try to replicate videos created by others, can encourage dangerous behavior among young users. TikTok previously cooperated with New York authorities to remove subway surfing content, the New York Times reported in January. The lawsuit seeks financial penalties against TikTok, including a requirement that the platform repay any profits it received from ads directed to New York teens or pre-teens.

Women make up roughly half of U.S. labor union membership, but representation in top level union leadership positions has lagged, even in female-dominated industries and particularly for women of color. Data from the U.S. Department of Labor shows that Black and Latina women experience a particularly wide gender pay gap. In 2023, Black women’s union membership rate notched a slight bump from 10.3% to 10.5%, while Latinas went up from 8.5% to 8.8%.
