Lansky said he was inspired by a discussion he had with a pilot he sat next to on a flight years ago. When the safety demonstration video began, “I noticed he wasn't paying attention to it. “You really need to kind of visualize actually lifting the flap,” Lansky told CNBC Travel. “Oh yes,” a U.S. flight attendant with more than two decades of experience told CNBC Travel. He said he asked flight attendants how many times they bump passengers elbows, knees and feet on long-haul flights.

This digital ad posted by Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania, about a week before Biden eventually dropped his bid, was the blueprint. Almost immediately, Democrats saw a surge of support — mostly from disillusioned Democratic voters. As of this writing, it’s now Republicans in battleground states and districts who are begging their nominee to change course. As for the GOP, Trump and his allies have done everything they can to mold the GOP in Trump’s image, and anyone who doesn’t share that view has essentially been purged. Of course, the real challenge for both Republicans will be figuring out how to navigate Trump’s appearances in their respective states.

… It seems like even though their heart rate does accelerate, it’s much more even (than the other spider’s heart rates),” he added. To test the spiders’ heart rates, Davis and study coauthor Christina Vu, who was a University of Georgia undergraduate student of entomology at the time, wrangled 79 spiders from two different genera. The Jorō spiders (top left) had to be carefully restrained using pins in order to measure the arachnids' heart rates. They compared the spiders’ resting heart rates to their heart rates during restraint and found all the spiders’ heart rates increased, but the Argiope spiders, which are known to avoid urban settings, had many more spikes as they struggled to run away, according to the research. … To observe spider heart rates, they must be restrained in the first place, which causes a heart rate elevation,” he said.

U.S. equity futures fell on Sunday evening as investors braced for key inflation data, after almost completely reversing its violent market rout last week. S&P 500 futures dipped 0.08% and Nasdaq 100 futures inched lower by 0.05%. Fear often works in our favor as stock market investors. "Another round of good [inflation] data could help calm fears that the Fed is potentially losing the plot," Cox said. "Retail sales and retailer earnings may show that fears of a job market slowdown are overblown," she added.

The rollout of Nvidia's next-generation of AI chips, Blackwell, is going to be delayed according to media and industry analyst reports. Smaller cloud firms that have built their businesses on Nvidia chips could be affected by the delay too. Each new generation of AI chips promises step changes in computing capacity, speed and efficiency, allowing for faster computations and larger models. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Nvidia's manufacturing partner, is using a relatively new process to manufacture the Blackwell chips. Some Blackwell chips have begun shipping to customers and production will still increase in the second half of the year.

But in the weeks after President Biden turned in a disastrous debate performance against Donald J. Trump last month, Mr. Heinrich was among the Democrats privately panicking. Polls showed New Mexico slipping into an expanding universe of potentially winnable states for the former president — foretelling an electoral disaster for Mr. Biden and trouble in the senator’s own re-election race. So Mr. Biden’s decision last weekend to exit the race took a weight off the shoulders of Mr. Heinrich and other Democratic incumbents, who now describe a sense of hope and momentum overtaking the doom and gloom that had permeated their party since late June. “Across the board — engagement, social media, anecdotal — everything feels different. I feel better about the broad momentum.”

Read previewIn 2019, at the age of 23, Lauren Simpson and her husband Ian decided to pursue an ambitious goal: retire by age 35. The rest is from the equity they've built in four properties they've purchased over the last three years: one primary residence and three rental properties. These properties also provide the couple with rental income that they put toward their savings. When someone buys a second home or investment property, mortgage lenders often require a downpayment of at least 10%. In addition to buying investment properties, Simpson said she and Ian have done whatever they can to grow their savings.

Research shows that young adults are the unhappiest age groupBlanchflower's most recent working paper, co-authored with Alex Bryson and Xiaowei Xu, shows a change in the pattern, with happiness starting off low in young adulthood and increasing with age. Alongside other researchers, Blanchflower analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. But Wimsatt Childs agrees with Blanchflower that social media likely plays a role in this new pattern of unhappiness. "What social media has done in a lot of ways is it has amplified concerns that were already well underway," she says. Social media — apps like Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok — floods people with information and can lead to comparison among peers on a larger scale, she adds.

This was, for the most part, a dismal England performance, regardless of the supernatural deliverance at the end. Everything that was bad about today in Gelsenkirchen had been signposted by England over the course of the last few weeks. The red flags had all been there since England opened their campaign in this same city two weeks ago. And yes, England are desperately flawed, still unbalanced, still uncertain on the ball, still struggling to create chances even when they dominate possession. It’s baffling that so many Democrats are failing to rally around a wildly successful president after one bad night. But it does remind me of why Republicans defeated Democrats in so many races Republicans should have lost. The Republican Party lost its mind and decided that this one victory negated everything we know about politics. One debate does not change the structure of this presidential campaign. For all the talk of Mr. Biden’s off night, what is lost is that Mr. Trump missed a great opportunity to reset his candidacy and greatly strengthen his position.

A Fumbling Performance, and a Panicking Party
  + stars: | 2024-06-27 | by ( Peter Baker | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
President Biden hoped to build fresh momentum for his re-election bid by agreeing to debate nearly two months before he is to be formally nominated. Instead, his halting and disjointed performance on Thursday night prompted a wave of panic among Democrats and reopened discussion of whether he should be the nominee at all. Rather than dispel concerns about his age, Mr. Biden, 81, made it the central issue. Practically in despair, some took to social media to express shock, while others privately discussed among themselves whether it was too late to persuade the president to step aside in favor of a younger candidate. “Biden is about to face a crescendo of calls to step aside,” said a veteran Democratic strategist who has staunchly backed Mr. Biden publicly.

In the biggest shock (by the FIFA world rankings) of Euro 2024 so far, Georgia defeated Portugal 2-0 to secure a place in the knockout stages in what is their major tournament debut. Georgia reached Euro 2024 — their first-ever appearance at a major tournament — after beating Greece in a playoff penalty shootout at the end of March. They had actually finished fourth in their Euro qualifying group, ahead of only Cyprus, but reached the playoffs via the Nations League route topping Group C4. Frustration was understandable, but it consumed him for the rest of the game — right until he was substituted midway through the second half, still without a goal in three appearances at Euro 2024. Going into tonight’s game, he had conceded four goals at Euro 2024 — but that was from 20 shots on target.

The retirement Catch-22
  + stars: | 2024-06-18 | by ( Ann C. Logue | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +10 min
The current Social Security retirement age is 67, but most Americans depart the workforce earlier than that. Instead of making it easier for Americans to save for retirement and work as long (or as short) as they want, Fink is setting up a catch-22: The economy needs aging Americans to work longer, but many companies simply don't want them. One of Button's studies looked at "bridge jobs , " part-time jobs in administration or retail that many people use to ease into retirement and cushion their finances. The same year, Scripps Medical Clinic in San Diego was ordered to pay $6.9 million for setting a mandatory retirement age for physicians of 70, regardless of the doctors' interest or abilities. And some older workers have heard all the corporate buzzwords and blather before, so they don't buy into management's sloganeering, rendering them "difficult."
