Darja Stefancic, a painter in Slovenia known for technicolor landscapes, thought it strange when an obscure online art gallery run by a woman from Argentina contacted her out of the blue and asked her to join its thin roster of artists. The painter suspected a scam, and she worried that the gallery, which virtually nobody in Slovenia’s tiny, tight-knit art scene had heard of, “just wanted to cheat people.”It did — but in ways that far surpassed even her darkest suspicions. The online gallery was a front for Russian intelligence, part of an elaborate network of deep-cover sleeper spies trained to impersonate Argentines, Brazilians and other foreign nationals by Russia’s foreign intelligence agency, the SVR, around Europe. They were real-life versions of the fictional stars of “The Americans,” a television series inspired by the 2010 arrest of a ring of actual Russian sleeper agents in the United States.

London CNN —An art historian has identified a missing portrait of King Henry VIII after spotting it on social media. It showed a gathering at a reception in Warwick’s Shire Hall, where Warwickshire County Council is based. The distinctive frame was one of the features that helped identify the painting as the missing portrait of Henry VIII. His focus was on the background where, hanging on a wall, was what he suspected was a missing portrait of the Tudor monarch Henry VIII. In a telephone call with CNN, Busiakiewicz revealed that this was not the first discovery he had made thanks to social media.

The Ladies Lounge first made headlines in 2020 as a female-only space displaying what were presented as original Picassos once owned by Kaechele’s great-grandmother. Enclosed in green silk curtains, the Ladies Room was opened for female visitors in 2020. I liked that a misogynist would dominate the walls of the Ladies Lounge. Guillaume Lethière (1760—1832) was a Neoclassical painter of mixed race who has never, until now, been the subject of a solo museum show. On a cloudy afternoon in May, a dozen strangers descended a tree-lined hill in the Catskills, one by one. They had just relinquished their phones, and the only sound they could hear was the distant beat of a drum. But they hoped that somehow they would emerge better, more fulfilled men. At the bottom of the hill, they entered a huge frame tent, bare except for carpets, chairs and space heaters. A circle of about 25 more men, all of whom had already been through the same process, or a very similar one, welcomed them.

London CNN —A set of 19th-century drawings by a teenage Queen Victoria will be put up for auction in London next week. An ink drawing by Queen Victoria, titled "A seated woman with a crown and sash" and dated 1838, is inscribed "by Her Majesty." George Hayter also gave the Queen drawing lessons, and Russell believes these drawings show his influence “quite closely”. The auction house has previously sold other works by royal artists, including a painting by Queen Victoria’s daughter, Princess Victoria, which fetched £4,198 (around $5,320) last year. The Royal Collection Trust, which looks after the royal family’s art collection, has more than 4,000 works by Queen Victoria, spanning 64 years of her life.

☆ Time Traveling Through London With an Impressionist Painter

In the early 1870s, an émigré painter watched from a railway footbridge as a steam engine left a station on London’s suburban fringe. His name was Camille Pissarro and he was developing a style of plein-air painting that would soon be called “Impressionism.”Pissarro and a fellow émigré, Claude Monet, only stayed in London for a few months. By April 1874 they were among the painters holding the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris, the subject of a retrospective that runs until July 14 at the Musée d’Orsay and opens on Sept. 8 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. But London was one of their early muses. Monet painted the River Thames and the Palace of Westminster, among other central landmarks, while Pissarro captured scenes in suburbs where houses and train tracks were replacing forests and farmland.

New York City was where you lost your soul, and we wanted to be closer to the earth. I wore an eight-and-a-half-foot-tall Statue of Liberty costume to the Easter Parade in New York City, and Kirsten came along with me. By the time I turned 30, I’d been telling people I was older for years, because I’m not the type to bemoan the loss of my youth. Going to New York felt like this moment of emerging to a wider audience, and then I started to travel a lot.

Barbara Gladstone, an art dealer whose eye for spotting talent and knack for nurturing it helped her to build one of the largest and most influential contemporary art galleries in New York, died on Sunday in Paris. She was 89. Her gallery said her death, in a hospital, was caused by an ischemic event, whose symptoms are similar to those of a stroke. Ms. Gladstone, who was on a working trip to Paris, lived in Manhattan. What brought these disparate artists together on her list was her abiding interest in them personally and the devoted way she husbanded their work.

☆ Land Art in Malibu Gets a Second Chance

Lita Albuquerque made a strange sort of painting in 1978 that changed her course as an artist. An abstract painter at the time, she had felt the urge to get out of her studio and work directly on the land where she lived, an artist’s colony on the bluffs of Malibu. She dug a narrow, shallow, 41-foot-long trench in the ground, running perpendicular to the Pacific Ocean, and poured powdered ultramarine pigment into it. She called it “Malibu Line” and it was the first of her many earthworks exploring the body’s relationship to land and cosmos, using bold pigments on natural materials like rocks and sand. Albuquerque, though, had a light touch, and the original “Malibu Line” disappeared within two years, overgrown by grass and wildflowers.
