Wildfires spread throughout parts of Northern California, the Pacific Northwest and western Canada this week, causing evacuation orders and sending tens of thousands of firefighters to combat the blazes. Buildings burned to the ground, cities were blanketed in smoke, and hundreds of thousands of acres of land were scorched. The Park fire in Northern California has burned more than 71,400 acres and led to the arrest of a man who officials said had caused the fire. The wildfires burning in the northwestern United States and western Canada triggered air quality warnings across both countries on Wednesday, as smoke spread over a region thousands of people have fled from. Thousands of firefighters and emergency personnel have been deployed in the region. The growing blazes have raised fears of a repeat of last year, when record wildfires in Canada blanketed cities as far south as Florida with dangerous smoke and haze. There were 40 active wildfires, none of which were under control, in Oregon and Washington covering more than 870,000 acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Many fires are exhibiting “extreme fire behavior,” the center said.

“These pesticides are applied to tens of millions of farm fields across the United States in quite high quantities, and they are contributing to PFAS contamination,” Andrews said. “The study provides empirical evidence of the extent of PFAS in pesticides,” said DeWitt, who was not involved in the research. PFAS helps pesticides last longerThe study authors submitted Freedom of Information requests to various state and federal government agencies in the US, including the EPA. The analysis found eight EPA-approved inert ingredients were PFAS, including the nonstick chemical Teflon. In February, the EPA proposed the removal of Teflon in pesticide products.

As a heat wave lingers in the Pacific Northwest, people in parts of Washington, Oregon and Idaho who are farther from the coast may see dangerously high temperatures near 110 degrees before the weekend is over. Parts of the three states, along with northern Nevada, are under an extreme heat warning from the National Weather Service, continuing a hot July for the whole region, where extreme heat was linked to hundreds of deaths in 2021. By early afternoon on Sunday, the temperature had already hit 99 once again. Temperatures there will not drop significantly until the end of the week, according to forecasters. If forecasts hold, Thursday will be the 10th straight 100-degree day, breaking the city’s record for the number of consecutive days with triple-digit temperatures.
