The timing of the outbreak is especially challenging for McDonald’s as it has been trying to win back customers who’ve been put off by higher prices. One of the patients in the McDonald's outbreak suffered from that condition, known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. Hedberg is also a member of the McDonald's Food Safety Advisory Council, but said he has not worked with the company on its response to the outbreak. The size of the outbreak "would imply widespread undercooking by many different individual McDonald's restaurants" if beef was the culprit, according to Hedberg. For example, rival Wendy's dealt with its own link to an E. coli outbreak two years ago. The bird flu virus hasn’t yet spread from person to person, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday, releasing findings from a monthslong probe into a patient in Missouri who was hospitalized with H5N1. The patient, who tested positive for bird flu in August, had no known contact with dairy cows or poultry. One blood test on a household member of the patient who became ill suggested the person did have H5 antibodies. AdvertisementAs Hurricane Milton approaches Florida's central-west coast, Tampa General Hospital, located on a low-lying man-made island, is bracing for disaster, and is preparing to put its flood defenses to the test. Although the fence was successful in protecting the hospital from Hurricane Helene a couple of weeks ago, Hurricane Milton may prove more challenging. A previous disaster-planning project, modeled after a fictional "Hurricane Phoenix" that was more devastating than Milton is expected to be, highlighted Tampa General Hospital's vulnerabilities. Tampa General Hospital did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
