ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) — Five puppies learning to be assistance dogs had a howling good time Tuesday during a training exercise at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. During the training, the quintet of pooches and their trainers walked through a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint, rode an elevated tram and boarded an airplane. It was all part of an effort to acclimate the dogs to one of the many settings they may experience later in life. The training was led by Paws With A Cause — a Wayland, Michigan-based nonprofit that oversees the custom training of puppies that become assistance dogs for people with disabilities. The group pairs puppies with volunteers who raise and socialize the dogs for the first year of their lives.

But Scout's happy ending is out of reach for too many shelter animals, as national euthanasia rates for shelter pets have climbed to a three-year high, according to Shelter Animals Count. While the percentages may seem small, with an estimated 6.3 million animals moving through the shelter system each year, they add up. SAC is working on a more scientific approach to tracking euthanasia rates to help clarify the large range, Filer said. Americans spent $58.1 billion on pet food and treats in 2022, according to the American Pet Products Association. Pet wellness company Honest Paws is offering $100 an hour to dogs that can be ambassadors for its peanut butter, according to an August 1 announcement. Honest Paw's investment could go a long way to sell its peanut butter which comes with a nearly $30 price tag for each jar. For the past three or four weeks of this record heatwave, people have been burned just by falling on the ground. There are also burn patients in the ICU, and about half of those patients are people burned after falls. Despite the extreme heat, most places aren’t seeing burn injuries right now. The bears' pools are regularly topped up with fresh water and their keepers hurl fruit and vegetables into the water to encourage the animals to swim. They also place frozen fruit and vegetables they dub "ice creams" up in the trees, where the bears find them in just a few seconds. "The temperatures are very high and their fur is very thick and it is not easy for them," said Taulant Hoxha, from the bear sanctuary.
