Amazon delivery drivers at one of the company's California facilities joined the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the union said Monday, in a win for labor organizers that have long sought to gain a foothold at the e-retailer. "We want fair pay and safe jobs, to be able to provide food for our families," said Rajpal Singh, an Amazon delivery driver at the Palmdale facility, in a statement. Randy Korgan, director of the Teamsters' Amazon division, said the union is "coordinating nationwide" with Amazon workers. So far, only one Amazon warehouse in the U.S. has voted to join a union. The B-21 is expected to arrive 40 years after the US's first stealth aircraft, the F-117 Nighthawk. The F-117 was officially retired in 2008, but the Air Force is still putting the stealth jet to use. The US Air Force is now making plans to keep some of its Nighthawks flying until at least 2034. The Air Force currently has about 45 F-117s, more than 10 of which have been approved for transfer to museums, Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek told Insider. A B-2 stealth bomber was damaged after making an emergency landing at a Missouri base on Saturday. "There was a fire associated with the aircraft after landing, and the base fire department extinguished the fire," the official added, noting that "there were no personnel injuries." Officials did not immediately release any additional information about the extent of the damage to the bomber, nor did they comment on what specifically caused both the emergency landing and the ensuing fire. On September 14, 2021 the left main landing gear collapsed on a B-2 bomber while it was landing, causing it to skid off the runway and rack up an estimated repair cost of over $10 million. The latest crash comes almost two weeks after the Air Force publicly unveiled its first new stealth bomber in decades, the B-21 Raider, at a facility in Palmdale, California earlier in this month.
On December 2, the US Air Force revealed its new stealth bomber, the B-21 Raider. That may have been an effort to avoid what happened the last time a stealth bomber was unveiled. One reason for that may be what happened the last time the Air Force unveiled a stealth bomber. Scott told Aviation Week in an article about the photo scoop published on the same day as the B-21's rollout. A US Air Force B-2 stealth bomber.
LOS ANGELES — The man involved in the shooting of Lady Gaga's dog walker during a robbery last year was sentenced Monday to 21 years in prison, officials said. James Howard Jackson, 20, pleaded no contest to the attempted murder charge and was immediately sentenced to prison, NBC Los Angeles reported. In August, almost four months after he was mistakenly freed from custody in Los Angeles, Jackson was captured and arrested in Palmdale, a city north of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Those charges were dropped with the plea entered Monday, NBC Los Angeles reported. Eric Leonard reported from Los Angeles, Antonio Planas reported from New York.

Six B-21 test aircraft are currently being assembled at the company's Palmdale, California, site, according to the aerospace and defense manufacturer.

The B-21 Raider is the first new American bomber aircraft in more than 30 years. Both the Air Force and Northrop also point to the Raider's relatively quick development: The bomber went from contract award to debut in seven years. And we will build the bomber force in numbers suited to the strategic environment ahead," Austin said. The B-21 Raider, which takes its name from the 1942 Doolittle Raid over Tokyo, will be slightly smaller than the B-2 to increase its range, Warden said. Northrop Grumman has also incorporated maintenance lessons learned from the B-2, Warden said.
Each new B-21 is pegged at roughly $729.25 million, and the U.S. Air Force expects to procure at least 100 of them. Factoring in inflation, it’s half the price of the exorbitantly expensive B-2 stealth bomber it’s meant to replace. (China’s military grasps the benefit of long-range stealth bombers in the Pacific context and is developing its own Raider-like stealth bomber intended to expand its strike range.) That isn’t to say the Raider program should be written a blank check.

The B-21 was unveiled during a dramatic ceremony at Northrop's Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, offering members of the public the first look at the new bomber. The Air Force planned to buy at least 100 of the planes and begin to replace B-1 and B-2 bombers. More than 8,000 people from Northrop Grumman, industry partners and the Air Force currently work on the program.

Outside the United States, countries including India are also beginning to increase the use of recharge ponds to store water in natural or human-made aquifers. While the idea of storing water underground is not new, a recent California law regulating groundwater use has spurred a spate of projects that the state is helping to fund. The new pond, on about 20 acres of former farmland , will help to guide water underground to store it for residents as well as agriculture. Since then the state's population has nearly doubled to 40 million residents.
A French state-owned railroad operator wanted to help California with its high-speed rail project. "SNCF was very angry," Dan McNamara, a project manager for SNCF, told the Times. Within 7 years, they built a functioning high-speed rail system in Morocco, the New York Times reported. They told the state they were leaving for North Africa, which was less politically dysfunctional." The California High-Speed Rail Authority continues to build: The first section of the rail is under construction in Central California.
Bed Bath & Beyond has released a list of the initial 56 stores it plans to close as part of a broader restructuring to stabilize the home goods chain's struggling business. The company recently outlined a major restructuring plan that included plans to close 150 "lower producing" stores and lay off 20% of its workforce. In the run-up to the reorganization announcement, at least one analyst criticized Bed Bath & Beyond for failing to maintain stores and for heavily discounting items. For much of 2022, Bed Bath & Beyond stock was the subject of interest from so-called "meme" investors after GameStop chairman Ryan Cohen announced a stake in the company earlier this spring. Year to date, Bed Bath & Beyond shares have declined roughly 45%.
Bed Bath & Beyond is closing around 150 stores and laying off staff. It has now named 56 of the stores set to close across 21 states. By laying off staff and closing the stores, the company said it planned to reduce costs by $250 million in 2022. Sales in the second quarter had slumped roughly 26% compared to the same period in 2021, Bed Bath & Beyond said in preliminary earning results. The struggling retailer has now revealed the location of 56 of the stores being closed, spanning 21 states and Puerto Rico.

CNN —If you’ve heard a sonic boom recently, you probably remember it. Now, NASA is working to change those regulations by transforming the boom into a “thump,” paving the way for a new generation of quieter supersonic aircraft. It’s set to take off for the first time later this year, ahead of its first quiet supersonic flight. “It will be significantly quieter than Concorde or any other supersonic aircraft that exist today,” Craig Nickol, senior adviser at NASA Headquarters, told CNN in 2022. However, it’s doubtful that any of them will be able to take advantage of the findings of the Quesst program, which will likely inform the next generation of supersonic aircraft.
