US Senator Schumer urges FTC to probe Exxon, Chevron mega-deals
  + stars: | 2023-11-01 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Earlier this month, Exxon proposed to buy Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD.N) for $60 billion and Chevron agreed to acquire Hess (HES.N) for $53 billion. The Democratic Senate leader said in a letter that the two of the largest oil and gas deals of this century are "likely to harm competition." Chevron and Exxon have accumulated huge profits from strong energy prices and demand since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The oil industry last went through an era of major consolidation in the late 1990s when Exxon, Shell (SHEL.L), BP (BP.L) and France's TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) merged with rivals to create huge integrated companies. The acquisitions followed a collapse in oil prices that weakened many companies.

A view of the turbines at Orsted's offshore wind farm near Nysted, Denmark, September 4, 2023. Orsted, the world's largest offshore wind developer, said in August it may see impairments of 16 billion Danish crowns ($2.3 billion) on its U.S. offshore developments due to supply chain problems, soaring interest rates and a lack of new tax credits. Norway's Equinor (EQNR.OL), BP's partner on those New York offshore wind developments, booked a $300 million impairment on the projects on Friday. In Massachusetts, two offshore wind developers, SouthCoast Wind and Commonwealth Wind, agreed to pay local utilities to terminate deals that would have delivered around 2,400 MW of energy. Avangrid also canceled a contract to sell power in Connecticut from its proposed 804-MW Park City offshore wind farm.

Morning Bid: Refunding relief stokes bond-led bounce

Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 23, 2023. But relief in Treasuries, the villain of the piece for several weeks, is probably the most significant marker for the remainder of the year. And there were further soothing noises for world bonds, even if not for global growth, from surprisingly weak Chinese business surveys for October. Overall, the picture pointed to another positive day for Wall Street stocks, with futures marginally positive ahead of the open as the Fed meeting gets underway. Orsted, the world's largest offshore wind developer, said it would stop developing its 2,248-megawatt (MW) Ocean Wind 1 and 2 projects in New Jersey. The offshore wind industry has found itself in a perfect storm of rising inflation, interest rate hikes and supply chain delays. Norway's Equinor (EQNR.OL), BP's partner on those New York offshore wind developments, booked a $300 million impairment on the projects on Friday. Orsted, which in June announced plans to invest 475 billion crowns by 2030, said it was in the process of reviewing its investments and could introduce cost-saving initiatives. Orsted's share price has tumbled 52% since an August profit warning, cutting its market value to 112 billion crowns from 235 billion.

"BP reported weak numbers this morning...However, notably, BP has reported exceptional gas trading results on several occasions in the last couple of years, including last quarter," said RBC analyst Biraj Borkhataria. In the downstream, customers & products reported $2.1 bln vs consensus $2.4 bln, despite being supported by very strong oil trading results, suggesting weaker refining margin capture in the third quarter." That was up from the $2.6 billion profit the company reported in the prior three months due to higher oil and gas production, strong refining margins, lower refinery maintenance and "a very strong oil trading result", but natural gas marketing and trading were weak. BP expects capital expenditure of $16 billion this year, the lower end of its indicated range of $16-$18 billion. Rivals Chevron (CVX.N) and Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) last week posted sharp year-on-year drops in third quarter profit as energy prices cooled.

The logo of British multinational oil and gas company BP is displayed at their booth during the LNG 2023 energy trade show in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, July 12, 2023. London-based BP has held talks in recent weeks with several companies about tying up operations in the Haynesville shale gas basin, the three sources said. BP is also considering creating joint ventures in the Eagle Ford basin, but the talks do not include its positions in the oil-rich Permian basin for now, two of the sources added. The rapid growth in U.S. shale oil and gas operations over the past 15 years has upended global markets, turning the U.S. into a major exporter of energy. By pursuing joint ventures, BP can achieve growth ambitions while avoiding spending billions on acquisitions.

To some observers, it may seem like Xi Jinping is itching to unify Taiwan with China. He has instructed the Chinese military to be prepared by 2027 to take Taiwan by force, if necessary, and China increasingly uses its growing military might to intimidate Taiwan’s people into yielding to Chinese control. Officers who are lining their own pockets, if that is the case, are likely not taking seriously enough Mr. Xi’s instruction to be prepared to seize Taiwan by 2027. Mr. Xi has frequently admonished the P.L.A. Russia’s debacle in Ukraine is a cautionary tale for Mr. Xi.

JERUSALEM, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Israel's Energy Ministry said on Sunday it had awarded 12 licenses to six companies to explore for natural gas off the country's Mediterranean coast, aiming to create more competition and diversify suppliers. It said that one group that includes ENI (ENI.MI), Dana Petroleum and Ratio Energies (RATIp.TA) will explore in an area west of the massive Leviathan field, which supplies Israel with gas and is also used for export. Another group comprised of BP (BP.L) Socar (403550.KS) and NewMed (NWMDp.TA) will explore north of the Leviathan, the ministry said. "The winning companies have committed to unprecedented investment in natural gas exploration over the next three years, which would hopefully result in the discovery of new natural gas reservoirs," said Energy Minister Israel Katz. The other tier comprises mainstream vessels that use Western services for legal oil shipments, including from Russia under the terms of the price cap. In the short term, available ghost vessels could be in particular demand, making chartering them more expensive. Even so, some analysts say removing the price cap could be the way to really punish Russia. But he said that was very unlikely because the price cap at least allows Russian oil to flow, thereby moderating international prices. "The Biden administration is already reeling from higher oil prices compounded by the unrest in Gaza, potentially spreading to a wider Middle Eastern conflict.

LONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - BP's (BP.L) electric vehicle charger unit is ordering $100 million worth of Tesla (TSLA.O) ultra-fast chargers for rollout in the United States, the first deployment of Tesla's chargers on an independent network, the companies said on Thursday. The good news for UBS and Morgan Stanley is that they are better placed than most to handle these pressures.
