A direct war between Israel and Iran could lead to substantially higher oil prices through 2025, according to Bank of America. This scenario assumes that Iran's crude oil production falls by up to 1.5 million barrels per day due to the war. Crude oil prices have fallen for three consecutive trading sessions in the wake of Iran's weekend missile and drone assault against Israel. The bank has penciled in the first Fed interest rate cut in December, and oil prices would come down by then though remain elevated. "Should supply losses build up regionally, it may also prove difficult to access spare production capacity, so oil prices would likely settle above $150/bbl for several months," the bank's analysts forecast.

"What we've seen is deposit pressures escalate more than previously anticipated," said Alexander Yokum, analyst at CFRA Research, who has a neutral view on regional banks. "A lot of these regional banks, they have less deposits, so if they lose deposits, it can really impact their operating results," Yokum said. CNN —Once considered among the most promising economies in Southeast Asia with a growing middle class, Myanmar is now suffering from soaring levels of poverty as a devastating civil war drives tens of millions further into destitution, according to a new United Nations report. Poverty has not only doubled but people are also more deeply poor, the report found. Wignaraja said Myanmar’s middle class is “literally disappearing.”“A 50% collapse of the middle class over two and a half years is quite astounding for this country, but for any country,” she said. The value of Myanmar’s local currency, the kyat, has plummeted, along with rising costs for food and other basic necessities. “We call on all stakeholders — inside and outside Myanmar — to take action and preserve vulnerable households from slipping into irreversible poverty and despair.”

Regional banks are taking hits this week and investors are increasing their bearish bets on the sector. Higher rates impact Higher interest rates increase the cost of borrowing money. Higher interest rates can also reduce demand for loans, as borrowing becomes more expensive for consumers and businesses. This can deteriorate the asset quality of regional banks, increasing the need for loan loss provisions, which are expenses set aside to cover potential loan losses. Rising interest rates and inflation can pressure banks' capital adequacy ratios, a measure of a bank's capital relative to its risks.

Despite broad concerns surrounding the health of regional banks, Ole Andreas Halvorsen's Viking Global bought into one key name in the sector in the fourth quarter. The move came near the end of a turbulent year for regional banks after the shuttering of Silicon Valley Bank , First Republic Bank and Signature Bank led investors to question the regionals' business model. Shares of U.S. Bancorp climbed more than 30% in the fourth quarter, but the stovck still ended the year down about 1%. The sector took a hit this year following New York Bancorp 's dismal fourth quarter earnings , which showed a loss, a large reserve against weaker future credits and slashed the dividend. Halvorsen went even further and zeroed out stakes in Microsoft and Arm Holdings , the British chip and software designer that went public last September.

The danger of higher rates for longer following the latest hot inflation reading raises the "downside risk" for regional banks, according to Bank of America. "Fewer and later Fed rate cuts pose downside risk to bank stocks," analyst Ebrahim Poonawala wrote in a Tuesday note. "We are especially concerned about the failure of the broader market to project the trajectory of interest rates – a consistent theme since the Fed began raising interest rates in March 2022." "We worry about the risk from no rate cuts in 2024 and a far more elevated level of interest rates across the UST yield curve," Poonawala added. Net interest margin is the difference between the interest banks earn on loans and pay on deposits.

Commander of Russia's Kantemirovskaya Tank Division Vladimir Zavadsky delivers a speech during a ceremony marking the anniversary of the unit's foundation in Naro-Fominsk in the Moscow region, Russia, June 28, 2020. Russian Defence Ministry/Handout via REUTERS Acquire Licensing RightsMOSCOW, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Major General Vladimir Zavadsky, deputy commander of Russia's 14th Army Corps, has been killed in Ukraine, a top regional official said on Monday. "Special military operation" is the term that Russia uses to describe the war in Ukraine, now approaching the end of its second year. Deaths of senior Russian officers, which military analysts have attributed in some cases to Ukrainian success in intercepting lax communications, have become rarer as the war has progressed. Zavadsky was a much-decorated officer and a former tank commander, said Gusev, adding that his death was a heavy loss that caused "transfixing pain".

US banks are sitting on an estimated $650 billion in unrealized losses on their bond holdings. Here's why banks have flexibility in making sure that their $650 billion balance sheet bomb is defused. The bond crash culminated in an estimated $650 billion in unrealized losses held by banks, according to Moody's. How banks can defuse their balance sheet bombDespite the massive unrealized losses, banks are looking at three scenarios that could help ensure losses aren't realized. First, banks could simply hold onto their low-yielding debt until it matures and not realize any losses at all.

CNN —Israel’s war on Hamas could set the Palestinian economy in Gaza and the West Bank back decades, according to a new analysis by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Key economic measurements, including employment rates and GDP, have all plunged across Gaza and the West Bank, according to the UNDP analysis. The past month of conflict has erased 61 percent of employment in Gaza and 24 percent of employment in the West Bank, the report warns. After one month of fighting, the number of people living in poverty in Gaza and the West Bank increased by nearly 20 percent, the UNDP report says. If the fighting were to continue through a second month, the Palestinian economy would be set back 19 years’ worth of development, Al Dardari said.

It's time to pick positions in bank stocks heading into year end as peak rates could be a "mini clearing event" for the sector, according to Bank of America. "While we are careful to not [get] carried away, peak interest rates do have potential to serve as a mini clearing event for bank stocks," BofA's Ebrahim Poonawala wrote in a Sunday note. Regional banks are down by 27% this year, and have continued to face intense scrutiny due to their exposure to commercial real estate. "Best case, peak rates could mark near term bottom in bank stocks vs. S & P." To be sure, there remain issues in the sector.
