Russia has launched a major counterattack in its Kursk border region, more than a month after a surprise invasion by Kyiv’s forces that turned the tables in the two-and-a-half-year war. Ukraine has claimed to hold some 500 square miles of Russian territory in Kursk after sweeping across the border on Aug. 6 and taking Moscow by surprise. NBC News was able to geolocate a video purporting to show a column of what appears to be Russian military vehicles moving toward the settlement of Snagost in the Kursk region. Ukrainian forces were also trying to break through the border in other areas of the Kursk region, the ministry said. Zelenskyy told NBC News last week that he planned to hold the territory his forces had seized in Kursk indefinitely.

Washington CNN —A six-month House GOP government funding plan cleared a key hurdle on Tuesday, but remains at risk of failing as Speaker Mike Johnson attempts to navigate a shutdown fight with his narrow majority. LONDON — Atomico, an early investor in top European technology firms from Stripe to Klarna, announced Monday the launch of two new funds worth $1.24 billion to back emerging and growth-stage startups in the sector. Venture funding for European tech startups nearly halved to $45 billion in 2023, compared to $82 billion in the previous year, according to a report penned last year by Atomico. This decline was a reversal to pre-pandemic years which saw a wild rise in tech valuations, Atomico said at the time. A global survey by market research firm Kantar found that a net 26% of marketers plan to decrease their spending on X in 2025, the biggest recorded pullback from any major global ad platform. Only 4% of marketers overall think X ads provide “brand safety” — certainty that their ads won’t appear alongside extreme content — compared with 39% for Google ads, Kantar said in a report Thursday. The findings suggest that Musk’s charm offensive at the world’s largest annual advertising festival, Cannes Lions, in June hasn’t succeeded. According to the report, YouTube remains the ad platform marketers most prefer, while, for consumers, Amazon and TikTok share the top spot. Brazil blocked X over the weekend following an order by the Supreme Court because Musk refused to appoint a new legal representative in the country.
