Navigating air travel at this time of year can be fraught, but it doesn’t have to be – and if anyone’s got intel on smoothly and successfully surviving summer travel, it’s the flight attendants who’ve seen it all. But the flight attendants say the lost sleep is worth it in the long run. Andrew adds that this advice is especially crucial if you’re flying internationally, suggesting that whatever you consider a “normal” connection time, you should probably double if you’re flying long haul. Consider whether check-in luggage is necessaryThe flight attendants always travel with carry-on luggage only and generally speaking encourage others to do the same. Rich Henderson, flight attendantOften flight attendants are just as clueless as passengers.

As a longtime big Hollywood star and hitmaker, Ford had already achieved an immortality of a kind. It’s pretty clear from his newest venture, the overstuffed if not entirely charmless “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” that while Indy may not in fact be immortal, the brain trust overseeing this installment wishes he were. They haven’t simply brought the character back for another go, they have also given him a digital face-lift. That said, the altered Indy is cognitively dissonant; I kept wondering what they’d done to — or perhaps with — Ford. “Raiders” was created by Spielberg’s pal, George Lucas, who saw it as a homage to the serials that he’d loved as a kid.

Staples is “a classic ‘category killer,’ like Toys R Us,” Mitt Romney, then Bain & Co.’s managing general partner, said in 1989. Another category killer fell this week, when Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy. Once the go-to stop for everything in customers’ homes, Bed Bath & Beyond was brought down by shopping changes, competition and its own missteps. Founded in 1971 as Bed ‘n Bath as a small linen and bath store, the company changed its name to Bed Bath & Beyond in 1987 to reflect its expanded merchandise selection and built larger superstores. It’s somewhat ironic that there is now nostalgia for Bed Bath & Beyond and other once dominant chains that drove mom-and-pops out of business.
WE LIVE in a depressing era of Instagram-driven food trends, when so many sandwiches have become grotesque aberrations—oozing, dripping, hulking, overstuffed monsters, designed to be photographed as much as or more than they were designed to be eaten. I propose a modest revolution in the face of this excess: a return to the notion that sandwiches are about the bread. We also live in a time when bakeries are producing high-quality bread in more places in the U.S., and possibly worldwide, than ever before. This isn’t just true of large cities on the coasts. Bakers across the country are laboring to provide better bread for their communities.
The debate over whether Meta is in decline may get quietened, at least for now. After three straight quarters of falling revenue, Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, on Wednesday reported that revenue for the first quarter jumped 3 percent, to $28.6 billion, from a year ago. The results, which surpassed Wall Street expectations and Meta’s own guidance, were bolstered by a growth in users. The company added 37 million daily users to Facebook, its marquee app, up 4 percent from a year earlier and a turnaround from its first-ever drop in users that it reported in early 2022. “We had a good quarter and our community continues to grow,” Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Meta, said in a statement.
How to Revamp Your Wardrobe Without Buying a Thing

BLESS THIS MESS A defeated Cher (Alicia Silverstone) tries to find a DMV-worthy outfit in 1995’s ‘Clueless.’“I HAVE nothing to wear.” It’s a common refrain heard in bedrooms nationwide. Who among us hasn’t peered into an overstuffed closet, sighed in disgust and struggled to find something—anything!—suitable? Even Cher Horowitz, Alicia Silverstone’s style-savvy character in the era-defining 1995 film “Clueless,” had an angst-addled relationship with her abundant wardrobe. Watch the scene depicted above, in which she seeks to assemble a “responsible-looking” outfit for her driver’s test. Our advice: Spend a few hundred to hire a wardrobe stylist for an hour or two and rediscover what you already have.
On April 1, 2001, a US EP-3 spy plane collided with a Chinese fighter jet over the South China Sea. One of eleven left in the fleet, the tired 1960s-era spy plane bristled with porcupine-like antennas. Within minutes, however, the fighters had reached the lumbering spy plane, and while Zhao Yu hung back about a half-mile, Wang Wei rapidly closed in. In severe trouble, he immediately radioed the base, telling them he was unable to maneuver and being sucked in by the spy plane. "You are not allowed aboard the aircraft," Osborn said.
Executives at Walmart (WMT.N), the largest U.S. importer of containerized goods, say they have made progress clearing unsold goods. Nevertheless, they remain cautious about consumer spending as inflation gobbles up money otherwise spent on goods, and recession and other "unknowns" threaten. Meanwhile, importers are selling products for pennies on the dollar to liquidators or offering steep discounts in customer email blasts. The Port of Los Angeles handled 331,811 20-foot (6-meter)equivalent units (TEU) of goods in February, a 36% year-over-year drop led by plummeting imports. "How much (improvement) remains to be seen," said Seroka, who added that ongoing West Coast port labor talks are also weighing on results.

Amazon Sued by Supplier Alleging Breach of Agreement

Gilimex claims Amazon pulled back its forecast for the year sharply in May, to far lower levels than projected and refused to compensate the supplier. The containers are designed specifically for Amazon and cannot be sold to other customers, the supplier said. The supplier says Amazon asked Gilimex to sign an agreement formalizing their relationship in January 2021 after Gilimex had begun making big investments to increase manufacturing capacity. The agreement allows Amazon to terminate the relationship without cause with 30 days of notice and requires Amazon to provide Gilimex with rolling six-month forecasts for planning purposes, according to the lawsuit. The suit, which alleges breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, unfair trade practices and negligent misrepresentation, was filed in New York State Supreme Court.

After the pandemic-driven surge in consumer demand that triggered a frenzy of shipping activity and skyrocketing prices, logistics and transportation companies are signaling a fast slowdown. The weekly Shanghai Containerized Freight Index, which measures shipping prices out of China, recently dropped to $1,443.29, about one-third the level it hit in early June. The jaw-dropping declines also measure the spot market prices. Most freight business moves on contract rates, and those long-term prices haven’t fallen nearly as fast as the spot market. Here are some tips for logistics and supply-chain managers to take advantage of a changing market.

Freight Operators’ Peak Shipping Season Is Crumbling

The peak shipping season is fizzling as overstocked retailers cancel overseas orders and freight companies scale back expectations for heavy freight volumes heading into the holidays. Many retailers pulled peak season orders in early this year to avoid a repeat of 2021 when supply-chain congestion caused delays and product shortages during the holidays. Container shipping rates that hit record highs last year have also pulled back sharply, although they still remain above 2019 levels. The peak shipping season cascades down into package transport, as United Parcel Service Inc., FedEx Corp. and others typically handle growing volumes as the calendar counts down to Christmas. Citi analysts say they expect a “weaker peak season and a large amount of uncertainty in terms of the magnitude of demand.”—Esther Fung and Liz Young contributed to this article.

Haitian, which with a 20% share of China’s market for cooking's brown gold, dismissed the accusations as a smear campaign. It says it complies with relevant food safety rules and stressed that food additives are common and don’t imply inferior quality. Even after the selloff, Haitian still trades at a mouth-watering 41 times forecast earnings for the next 12 months, per Refinitiv. Lab tie-up would have multiple ailments

LONDON, Oct 11 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Qiagen (QIA.DE) may once again find itself at the centre of an M&A drama. The $10 billion German lab tester is in talks with $10 billion U.S. life-science company Bio-Rad (BIO.N), the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. Any deal would follow Thermo Fisher Scientific’s (TMO.N) failed attempt to buy Qiagen for 11.3 billion euros ($11 billion) back in 2020. Regulators in the United States and Europe have been increasingly wary of tie-ups that could lead to higher prices. Keeping tabs on such corporate actions is a tall order, especially when the ETF plans to mimic the make-up of the S&P 500 Index and avoid skewing investment toward anti-woke darlings such as the oil sector. Subjects like job creation and fair pay are topics that advocates such as the Congressional Progressive Caucus are advancing. So too is BlackRock (BLK.N) boss Larry Fink, who noted how companies manage their employees is material to investors’ interests. Trustbusters’ metaverse gambit

NEW YORK, Oct 10 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Mark Zuckerberg isn’t the only one making risky gambits in the metaverse. On Friday, trustbusters at the Federal Trade Commission pared back their arguments against Meta Platforms’ (META.O) acquisition of virtual reality app maker Within. The agency run by Lina Khan stepped back from initial arguments that Meta’s Beat Saber game competes directly against Within’s Supernatural fitness app. That was always an odd stretching of definitions that both limited the market to a thin slice of virtual reality and at the same time included wildly disparate apps. That resembles arguments against the 2015 merger of sterilization companies Steris and Synergy – a case the FTC lost.

NEW YORK, Oct 7 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The U.S. job market is still hot, and that could be a weakness. This shows some strength in the economy, just as Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell furiously hikes interest rates to fight inflation. As interest rates have risen rapidly, making people feel less wealthy, consumers have pulled back on their buying. Corporate America was caught off guard with a sudden change in demand. My 'poverty mentality' was holding me back, but getting rid of those items freed up mental and physical space. But I hadn't dealt with one of the most significant factors underlying my hoarding instincts: poverty mentality. What is 'poverty mentality'? But my poverty mentality kept me living as though I were barely employed and living paycheck to paycheck. The opposite of my poverty mentality isn't to act like I'm rich (I'm not) or spend every dime I make.
