Palestinian health officials said more than 500 people were killed in an Israeli strike on a Gaza hospital in one of the deadliest single incidents of violence in the strip—hours before President Biden was expected to visit Israel in a show of support. Some of the jet aircraft that the Biden administration ordered to defend Israel and deter further attacks arrived in the region Thursday, the Pentagon said. A squadron of A-10 ground-attack planes based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona will be stationed at Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, defense officials said. The U.A.E.’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that the arrival of U.S. aircraft at its base is unrelated to developments in the region and has been taking place for several months according to predetermined timetables. —Omar Abdel-Baqui contributed to this article.

ATARA, West Bank—Thaer Atary and his family live just steps away from an overflowing makeshift dumpsite that sends noxious fumes drifting into their home in this mountaintop Palestinian village. “A dump should never be this close to residents,” said Mr. Atary, worrying for the health of his children as the stench of rotting trash wafts through the air.
