Aurélien Quinion, a French race-walker who competed on Thursday, had a dramatically different experience ahead of the 20km final. Quinion instead was at his wife’s bedside at 2 a.m. Paris time as she gave birth to their baby girl, Charlie. The French athlete eventually got about 30 minutes of something approaching sleep before getting in a taxi and heading to the race, less than six hours after Charlie entered the world. In a statement released by the French Athletics Federation, Quinion said mother and daughter were both doing well. Quinion finished ninth in the event, setting a personal best of 1:19:56.

American colleges and universities are major training grounds for future Olympians. Three out of four of those athletes played at the collegiate level, according to the U.S. Olympic Committee. The school's most recognizable alum is swimmer Katie Ledecky, who, as of Wednesday, has won 12 Olympics medals in her career, including eight golds — tying Jenny Thompson's record for the most by any female swimmer in Olympic history. After Stanford, next on the list is the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with 17 athletes, and the University of Southern California (USC) with 16. Villepinte, France AP —Imane Khelif of Algeria won her opening Olympic boxing bout Thursday when opponent Angela Carini of Italy quit after just 46 seconds. Carini and Khelif exchanged only a few punches before Carini walked away and abandoned the bout — an extremely unusual occurrence in Olympic boxing. They were allowed to compete in Paris by the IOC task force, which has run the past two Olympic boxing tournaments. Olympic boxing reached gender parity for the first time this year, with 124 men and 124 women competing in Paris. Several sports have updated their gender rules over the past three years, including World Aquatics, World Athletics and the International Cycling Union.
