Prosecutors filed another murder charge Tuesday against the man accused of being the Gilgo Beach serial killer, bringing the number of alleged victims to seven, all women slain near New York City. A hair linked to the wife or daughter of suspect Rex Heuermann was found near the left wrist of 24-year-old victim Valerie Mack, according to court documents. He’s now been formally accused of murdering Mack, who worked as an escort before her skeletal remains were found in November 2000. The charge connected to Mack comes after Heuermann was accused by Suffolk County prosecutors of murdering Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Sandra Costilla and Jessica Taylor. Heuermann, a New York City architect, was arrested in July 2023 and initially indicted in connection with the slayings of Barthelemy, Waterman and Costello.

WASHINGTON — As public concern has escalated over drones flying in the skies above New Jersey and other East Coast states, the White House wants Congress to pass legislation that would give greater authority to the federal, state and local governments to address drones that fly in U.S. airspace. “We do need better authorities to deal with that growing ecosystem of drones in U.S. airspace," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Tuesday in an interview on NBC's "TODAY" show. Gaps exist in federal, state and local government authorities to deal with drones, Kirby said. “We know that there’s no national security threat. The bill was proposed last year by Sen. Israel was “closer to a ceasefire deal than we have ever been,” Defense Minister Israel Katz said during a closed-door parliamentary committee hearing Monday. Hamas would also see a large number of Palestinian prisoners released by Israel as part of the deal, the sources said. Hamas has not confirmed to NBC News or others’ reporting that it has agreed to Israeli troops in Gaza. "After the military and governmental power of Hamas in Gaza is defeated, Israel will securely control Gaza with full freedom of action" he posted on X, likening this outcome to Israel’s current control over the occupied West Bank. Katz did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for details on what “full freedom of action” would mean.

Eleven Indian nationals were among 12 people found dead at a ski resort in the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, officials said, in what may be a case of carbon monoxide poisoning. All were employees at a restaurant in Gudauri, a popular ski resort near the Russian border, Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement. “At the initial inspection, no signs of body injuries or signs of violence were detected,” the ministry said. The ministry said Georgian police were investigating the deaths as negligent manslaughter, adding that a forensic team was working to determine the exact cause of death. Travelers with confirmed tickets to exit China within 10 days can enter the country in 60 places across 24 provinces, including the capital, Beijing, and China’s largest city, Shanghai. The expanded scheme also allows transit visitors to travel across regions during the 10 days, with some restrictions. Ju Huanzong / Xinhua News Agency via Getty ImaVisa waivers for transit passengers are popular among travelers, including Americans, who might otherwise be required to go through a tedious visa process for travel to China or elsewhere. Passport holders from 38 countries no longer need a visa at all, enabling them to stay in China for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchange and transit purposes. The move was prompted by the Biden administration’s announcement that it had secured the release of three Americans who had been detained in China for years.

The U.S. Agriculture Department must take immediate action to secure the benefits cards from which low-income families are being robbed of grocery funds, six Democratic senators urged in a letter. But unlike consumer credit and debit cards, SNAP EBT cards lack security features such as microchips or tap-to-pay technology. “It’s unacceptable that hackers and scam artists are stealing food benefits that low-income families rely on to put food on the table,” Wyden said in a statement to NBC News. California, set to start rolling them out in early 2025, is the furthest along, an Agriculture Department spokesperson said. “We’re calling on the USDA to stop dragging their feet and modernize EBT cards with the same technology we’ve used for years on credit and debit cards.”

This article is part of “Dealing the Dead,” a series investigating the use of unclaimed bodies for medical research. “Particularly after he served his country.”Supplying unclaimed bodies for medical research is widely considered unethical, and most major medical schools — and a few states — have halted the practice. NBC News spent months documenting the use of unclaimed bodies in medical research, submitting public records requests to dozens of state agencies, county coroners and medical schools. That included Pennsylvania, where an official said the body-donation program could not share how the 58 unclaimed bodies were used. He wants to see more regulation of the body donation industry and has written guidelines that call for donation programs to stop using unclaimed bodies.

The aftermath of an “exceptionally violent” attack in early Bronze Age England suggests that at least 37 people may have been “systematically dismembered” and eaten, new research has revealed. Over 3,000 bones were excavated from a 50-foot pit in Charterhouse Warren, around 20 miles south of the city of Bristol in southwest England. and 2010 B.C., researchers suggest, adding that it's a unique example of extreme violence in Early Bronze Age Britain and that "nothing else on this scale” has been recorded in Britain. However, Schulting said the extreme violence was unlikely to have been an isolated incident in the U.K. at the time. The authors do not believe that the attackers were driven to eat the human remains because of hunger, as the bone fragments were found alongside these animal bones, indicating there was sufficient food.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter crashed on Monday near Potrero, an area in the far southeastern reaches of San Diego County close to the U.S.-Mexico border, killing the pilot, according to CBP. The CBP Air and Marine Operations aircraft crashed during a border security mission north of state Route 94 and two miles south of Barrett Lake around 10 a.m., according to a CBP spokesperson. One CBP Air Interdiction Agent, who was the pilot and sole person aboard the aircraft, was killed in the crash, CBP said. Katz said the flight track shows the pilot flying erratically before crashing, but the track log doesn’t suggest anything was wrong with the helicopter itself. The Air and Marine Operations is a separate component of CBP, a spokesperson with the agency clarified to NBC 7.

Investigators work at the site where Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, the head of Russia's radiological, biological and chemical protections forces, was killed by an explosive device in Moscow on Tuesday. An exploding scooter taking out a senior general is certainly not a good look for Russia’s beefed-up internal security apparatus. Assassinations of key military figures on Russian soil, either directly or indirectly linked to Ukraine, have been a feature of this war. Luigi Mangione has been indicted in New York on a first-degree murder charge. A Manhattan grand jury indicted Luigi Mangione on charges of first-degree murder, with prosecutors alleging he killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson "in furtherance of terrorism." In an interview with CNN prior to taking on Mangione as a client, Friedman Agnifilio said the evidence was "overwhelming" that Mangione killed Thompson.

Now, Americans may have to actually brace for stagflation — something the nation’s economy hasn’t experienced in over half a century. Just over a month from now, Trump will have the power to levy tariffs on other nations at the flick of a pen. When the Fed responded to high levels of unemployment in the 1970s by cutting rates to relieve pressure businesses faced, it later had to contend with higher inflation. The path to stagflationThe tariffs Trump has floated aren’t inherently inflationary, Michael Feroli, chief US economist at JPMorgan, told CNN. But higher tariffs can quickly fuel cascades of price increases if Americans expect higher inflation because of them and demand higher wages, which, in turn, could result in businesses continuing to raise prices.
