WASHINGTON, Sept 18 (Reuters) - With the world on track to break the record for the hottest year in history, world leaders, business leaders, celebrities and activists have converged on midtown Manhattan for Climate Week and the U.N.'s Climate Action Summit, again focusing the world's attention on the climate crisis. As of Monday, the U.N. had not announced which world leaders or officials would get one of the coveted speaking slots at the climate summit. "It is disheartening to witness the lack of ambition on what truly ails us – emissions from fossil fuels," the small islands alliance said in a statement. "We implore the international community to use the platforms of the UNGA and New York Climate Week to signal unequivocal support for Small Island Developing States," it said, using the acronym for the U.N. General Assembly. Meanwhile, at several hotel ballrooms and other venues across Manhattan, around 2,600 people have registered for in-person attendance at Climate Week events featuring over 200 speakers from the private sector, governments and nongovernmentalion (NGOs.

At the center of it allClean energy investments by Masdar could help Uzbekistan, a vast, landlocked country in Central Asia where the population and its energy needs are growing rapidly, rely less on the fossil fuels that make up nearly all of its energy arsenal today. Its government relies entirely on foreign funding to build up its energy infrastructure, however, and will take what it can get. He said he hoped to get countries to agree on a tripling of global renewable energy capacity at the climate talks. Emirati funding of both renewable and fossil energy is playing out elsewhere, too. In Azerbaijan, a recent Adnoc investment in an offshore oil field overshadowed Masdar’s expansion in renewable energy.

They threatened to stay until the subsidies are lifted, and to come back every day if the police remove them. The action is part of a series of protests led by Extinction Rebellion targeting the Dutch parliament. Political Cartoons View All 1148 ImagesA report published Monday said the Dutch government spends around 37.5 billion euros ($40.5 billion) per year in subsidies to industries that use fossil fuels — notably the powerful shipping industry. Minister for Climate and Energy Rob Jetten acknowledged that the country has to end the subsidies, but has offered no timeline. The report calls on lawmakers to begin phasing out the subsidies even before the country’s Nov. 22 general election.

Investors should see opportunity after Valvoline 's recent sell-off, Wells Fargo said. "VVV is a high quality operator w/ category-leading comps, accelerating unit growth and an asset-light model," he said. While electric vehicles present a long-term risk, "recent underperformance is sharp and we see opportunity." While he noted shares trade 13% above auto service providers, they are below auto part peers, high-growth retailers and restaurants. While Lantz admitted that the rise of electric vehicles creates a risk, Valvoline is in a better position than others.

I Love Images | Cultura | Getty ImagesRising interest rates are pushing auto loan rates upwards for both new and used cars across the U.S. "If you have good credit, you get lower interest rates," he said. "If you have poor credit, you're going to get higher interest rates." Interest rates on used cars currently are the highest in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina and West Virginia. The longevity risk associated with used cars is yet another factor driving up interest rates for car shoppers, Yoon said.

Driving a Tesla means no more oil changes and frequent upkeep. A Tesla will never need an oil change and requires less upkeep overall. Hum Images/Universal Images Group via Getty ImagesSome Tesla owners say they've gone years without bringing their EV into a repair shop. Meanwhile, an electric car will never need an oil change, new fuel filter, spark plugs, or emission checks. Many Tesla owners said the only times they visited service centers were for issues that were covered by the carmaker's warranty or for collisions.

I’ve been driving for nearly 30 years, but until recently, I hadn’t ever changed my car engine’s oil by myself. But a month ago, figuring I may not have many more chances, now that oil-free electric cars are becoming the norm, I decided to jack up my car and do it myself. Decked out with cameras, touch-screens and microprocessors, modern cars can feel like entirely digital devices, little more than iPhones on wheels. As I’ve written before, it’s long past time we replaced these inefficient, pollution-belching, climate-warming beasts with other ways of getting around. And even if electric cars are no panacea, they’re a huge improvement over their gassy predecessors.

Stretching loan payment periods can be a dangerous game, especially since vehicles depreciate in value so consistently. When you lease a car, you're only taking out an auto loan to cover the duration of your lease period, which can cut the size of your loan considerably. Bumper-to-bumper coverageLeasing a car, much like renting an apartment, means that you're not financially responsible for many of the repairs necessary to keep the car running while you're leasing. If you're shopping for a used car, consider checking on leasing deals to see if you can manage a similar monthly payment for a leased new car as you would for a loan on a used car. A few warningsThere are a few things to keep in mind before you decide to lease a car.

Gas-powered vehicles require maintenance like oil changes and more. Still, there are key nuances to EV maintenance that drivers should know. Taking your car to the shop will look a lot different if you drive an EV versus a gas-powered vehicle. But because EVs are so tech-heavy, they do come with some maintenance and service nuances. Here's a rundown of all the ways that keeping an EV on the road is different from a gas-powered vehicle:

Mike Wilhelm is a service and parts director at a car dealership in Michigan. He says drivers have some misconceptions about car repair and how EVs differ from gas-powered cars. Here's his advice for car repair and maintenance, as told to the reporter Alexa St. John. I would suggest car owners do a little bit of homework on car maintenance and why it's necessary so they can understand the importance of it. They took their car to an aftermarket mechanic, put four or five different parts on the car, and come to us saying no one's ever touched the car.

New York CNN —Banks have pledged to go green, but last year they poured billions of dollars into expanding the capacity of fossil fuel production despite the accelerating climate crisis. While Canadian banks are providing a rising share of the money, US lenders still dominate the market and accounted for 28% of all fossil fuel financing in 2022, said the report. High prices have swelled profits for energy companies, leaving them flush with cash. The record profits come after the world’s 60 largest private banks provided $5.5 trillion in finance for fossil fuels over the past seven years, according to the report. The Banking on Climate Chaos report, which has been published for 14 years, examines the fossil fuel funding of the 60 largest banks in the world.
Like Sykes, it made a transition from black to green — and in doing so, it demonstrated it's possible for big energy companies to pivot to clean energy. To limit the influence of climate change, those emissions need to rapidly decrease — which means that big energy companies need to change their operations. A 2022 study found that 51% of the world's biggest publicly listed energy companies had not set out a strategy to reduce their emissions. Shell, for example, says it has about 50 gigawatts of renewable energy in operation, under construction, or in development. "If we could do the energy transition without them, I wouldn't be doing this," van Baal added.
Gas-powered vehicles require maintenance like oil changes and more. Still, there are key nuances to EV maintenance that drivers should know. Tesla has advertised its vehicles with that, touting them as "eliminating the need for service." But because EVs are so tech-heavy, they do come with some maintenance and service nuances. Here's a rundown of all the ways that keeping an EV on the road is different from a gas-powered vehicle:
Ford, which leads the commercial vehicle market in both Europe and the United States, launched the system in 2021. Hans Schep, European head of Ford Pro, the company's commercial vehicle business, said it is already close to hitting long-term targets of increasing vehicle "up time" by up to 60%. Ford recently announced engineering job cuts in Europe, but is still hiring software experts for its data services. Data is a huge battleground for commercial vehicle makers and competition will only intensify with electric models, which are essentially computers on wheels. Starting with 2024 models, GM will provide a range of OnStar data services free for fleet vehicles.
CNN —The first tool that mechanic trainees at Maryland’s Vehicles for Change program pick up is not a wrench, but a pair of virtual reality goggles. The virtual-first training program is an unconventional solution to a real-world problem: a significant shortage of qualified automotive technicians. Maryland's Vehicles for Change program is using VR to help train more mechanics and address a nationwide mechanics shortage. In the early days of the pandemic, doctors and nurses used VR to train for treating patients with Covid-19. And some schools have used VR to expand the classroom beyond its physical walls, particularly as demand for remote education exploded during the pandemic.
Electric cars require different service and maintenance than gas-powered ones. They also wonder what it means to service and maintain these vehicles — and how much that will cost them. Tesla even advertises its vehicles as "eliminating the need for service." EV tires are different than those for a gas-powered vehicle. What it means for car dealersAs a result of these shifts, dealers are assessing just how much of an impact that potentially less vehicle service will have on their bottom lines.

Car manufacturers don't have consistent advice on how long you should idle your car in the cold. Generally speaking, idling your car for about 30 seconds when it's cold can help it run smoothly. Others like Ford and Chevrolet recommended idling for no more than 30 seconds after starting. How much time is where mechanics diverge on the subject, but around 30 seconds is the general consensus for modern engines. What I can say is if you idle much longer than 30-60 seconds, you're just wasting gas and money.

Today's electric car buyers have a lot of questions. Potential EV drivers have plenty of questions, and there's plenty you need to know before buying an electric car. Regardless, here are some tips on what to ask your dealer or sales advisor if you're considering buying an EV. It's important for car-buyers considering an EV to ask about how it fits into an average driver's lifestyle. But given how much this market depends on improvements in battery tech, dealers should still be ready to talk about what separates their EV's battery from competitors.
Sollina Images | Tetra Images | Getty ImagesAmid record high inflation, stretching Social Security benefit checks became more difficult in 2022. Even as a 5.9% cost-of-living adjustment went into effect in January, the record high annual benefit increase still fell short, according to new research from The Senior Citizens League. The average retiree benefit fell short by an average of $42.35 per month, or 46%, the research found. The 5.9% annual increase for 2022 was the highest bump to benefits in 40 years when it was announced in October 2021. "Even the simplest of foods are harder for people to afford," said Mary Johnson, Social Security and Medicare policy analyst at The Senior Citizens League.
