China said on Tuesday it would begin banning the export of some rare minerals to the United States, in an escalation of the tech war between the world’s two biggest powers. China produces almost all the world’s supply of critical minerals needed to make advanced technologies such as semiconductors. Beijing has been tightening its grip on the materials, also known as rare earths, in retaliation for U.S. export controls. In October, China began requiring its exporters to disclose, step by step, how the minerals would be used in Western supply chains. The move was the third significant action in the past three years in the Biden administration’s bid to prevent China from catching up to the United States in cutting-edge technologies.

The mission assigned to Pat Gelsinger when he took over Intel as CEO in 2021 was to restore the then 52-year-old company to relevancy. Its business of designing and manufacturing chips — once industry-leading — was struggling. "By the time Intel began to work on AI chips, it was too late, and the company had basically no market share." Its line of AI chips, known as Gaudi, has paled compared to offerings from competitors like Nvidia. Doing so will require strengthening its fab manufacturing business, which The Futurum Group's Newman notes is no easy feat.

Stock market trading has been acutely sensitive to economic data in the post-Covid era, with the averages moving sharply on upside and downside surprises. The first test if that holds true: Friday's nonfarm payrolls report for November that Bank of America recommends market participants "tread carefully" when assessing due to noisy data. "The market has never been this reactive to macro data as it has post-COVID. Like the October report, BofA expects the payrolls release to be noisy because of impacts from storms in the Southeast and a Boeing strike. The firm sees an above-consensus 240,000 jobs created, with 100,000 built in from the reversal of the storm and strike impacts.

AdvertisementNew survey data from Evercore suggests Netflix has room to raise prices. Netflix's subscriber gains from its password-sharing crackdown could be waning, and some on Wall Street think it'll raise prices soon to keep its growth going. Its quarterly survey of Netflix subscribers, published December 1, showed that Netflix is in a strong position based on market penetration, satisfaction, and likelihood of canceling. Netflix's lower-priced ad tier has also increasingly kept people from canceling while giving the streamer cover to raise prices on its pricier, ad-free tiers. The last time Netflix raised prices on its Standard ad-free plan was January 2022, when it raised it by $1.50 to $15.49.

Hanoi, Vietnam Reuters —A court in Vietnam on Tuesday upheld a death sentence for real estate tycoon Truong My Lan after rejecting her appeal against a conviction for embezzlement and bribery in a high-profile $12 billion fraud case, state media reported. Lan, the chairwoman of real estate developer Van Thinh Phat Holdings Group, was sentenced to death in April for her role in Vietnam’s biggest financial fraud case on record. The High People’s Court in southern Ho Chi Minh City determined there was no basis to reduce Lan’s death sentence, reported online newspaper VnExpress. If Lan is able to return three-quarters of the money embezzled while on death row, it is possible the sentence could be commuted to life imprisonment, the report said. Apart from the death sentence, Lan was handed a life sentence at a separate trial in October after being found guilty of obtaining property by fraud, money laundering and illegal cross-border money transfers.
