Two Canadians died from infections caused by listeria after drinking popular milk substitutes based on almonds, oats, cashews and coconuts that were sold under the Silk and Great Value brands, the country’s health department said Wednesday night. Another 10 infections, most of them affecting residents of Ontario, have been confirmed by laboratory tests, the department, Health Canada, said in its health notice. But she said the plant is in Ontario and that none of the products were distributed outside of Canada. Because of Canada’s privacy laws, no personal information about the victims was released. The refrigerated plant-based products are sold in milk cartons and are viewed by some as a healthier alternative to cows’ milk.

Kodiak protein-packed oatmealIt was nice that the Kodiak oatmeal had protein but we didn't love the flavor. Ted BergKodiak is a bit of an outlier among the oatmeals I tested in that it includes added pea protein, whey protein, and milk protein. Each serving of oatmeal has 12 grams of protein, about three times more than the other varieties I tried. It also featured the largest and least ground-up oats and required the shortest cooking time — as little as 30 seconds in the microwave. This was undoubtedly our least favorite of the oatmeals we tried, but I could see it being a decent option for someone who wants extra protein in the morning.

The quick and easy meal was among America's top 10 breakfast foods in 2019, according to a survey conducted by OnePoll in collaboration with Dave's Killer Bread. "I never recommend cereal to my patients to have for breakfast, simply because it's processed. I don't recommend anything that's processed," said Dr. Nancy Rahnama, an internist and clinical nutritionist. If you have only enough time to grab a bowl of cereal, reach for ones that are high in fiber and low in sugar, she advised. Here is a list of cereals that are high in nutrients like fiber and protein and low in added sugar, according to a recent report by Healthnews.com.

CNN —Many people love their ultraprocessed foods. More than 70% of the US food supply is made of ultraprocessed food. But a diet heavy in ultraprocessed food isn’t good for us, science has shown. Eating ultraprocessed foods raises the risk of developing or dying from dozens of health conditions, according to a February review covering nearly 10 million people. The no-fly list of ultraprocessed food is loaded with store-bought chips, sugar-packed yogurts and candy-filled trail mix.

I love “Seinfeld.” As for the actual comedian Jerry Seinfeld, however it’s…complicated. In most of his activities outside his eponymous classic sitcom (1989-1998), Seinfeld bemuses more than amuses me. This ambivalence only obliquely affects my opinion of “Unfrosted,” Seinfeld’s recently-released feature-length Netflix comedy. Stone Age Paleo diet was not rich in meat, scientists say
  + stars: | 2024-04-30 | by ( Katie Hunt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
CNN —What did people in the Stone Age eat before the advent of farming around 10,000 years ago? Scientists analyzed chemical signatures preserved in bones and teeth belonging to at least seven different Iberomaurusians and found that plants, not meat, were their primary source of dietary protein. The evidence suggested that the Iberomaurusians consumed “fermentable starchy plants” such as wild cereals or acorns, according to the study. The work undermines the idea that a Stone Age diet was meat heavy — a rigid assumption perpetuated by present-day dietary trends like the Paleo diet. The transition to agriculture was a complex process that occurred at different times and proceeded at different rates, in different ways with different foods, in different places, Pobiner said.

Simple snacks from the Mediterranean diet can help you cut back on processed food like potato chips, according to a dietician. The Mediterranean diet is all about focusing on moderation and nutrient-dense food instead of restriction, said registered dietitian and food writer Sheela Prakash, author of "Mediterranean Every Day: Simple, Inspired Recipes for Feel-Good Food." Snacking doesn't have to be off-limits on the Mediterranean diet, but reaching for whole foods with a healthy dose of protein and fiber can be a more energizing option than processed foods.
