Read previewA convoy of vehicles headed to Texas, organized by a group called "Take Our Border Back," has had a chaotic start, including slashed tires and a stranded participant, according to WIRED. According to WIRED, it all started to go wrong even before the convoy had set off. 4 cars had their tires slashed overnight at the Hotel where participates of the #TakeOurBorderBack convoy were staying. The group stated that one of its goals is to stop illegal immigration immediately and secure the border. How exactly the convoy plans to confront migrants at the border and stop them from entering the US remains unclear.

Dividend-growing stocks offer investors the ultimate of benefits: the prospect of rising income and stock price appreciation, Morgan Stanley found. Tech isn't usually associated with dividend income, but some semiconductor-related stocks made it to Morgan Stanley's list. Broadcom , an artificial intelligence beneficiary whose shares are up 88% in the past year, was also highlighted on Morgan Stanley's list of dividend ideas. Finally, Mondelez International , maker of Sour Patch Kids candy and Oreo cookies, made it to Morgan Stanley's list of dividend growers. Other names that made Morgan Stanley's list of companies that have raised their dividends include Accenture , Microsoft , Marathon Petroleum and D.R.

Now for the first time this century, sales volumes at the big consumer goods manufacturers are falling. In the first nine months of the year, Kraft Heinz said the quantity of its sold items declined by nearly 6 percentage points year-on-year. That’s likely to allow Nestlé, Kraft Heinz and Unilever to see flat or modest increases in 2023 sales, LSEG data shows. Earlier this year, outgoing Kraft Heinz Chief Executive Miguel Patricio said the company lost market share to a branded competitor that spent more. Unilever, Nestlé and Kraft Heinz have all pointed to a slowing of price growth in the coming year.

But those assurances have rung hollow as advertisements have continued to be placed on accounts posting hate speech and conspiracy theories. “Elon introduced unique risks,” marketing industry veteran Lou Paskalis, the founder and chief executive of marketing consultancy AJL Advisory, told CNN. “It’s self-destructive for any advertiser to be associated with him,” Sonnenfeld told CNN. His endorsement of the post came as the progressive watchdog Media Matters issued a report that indicated advertisements for major brands appeared next to neo-Nazi hate speech on X. Legal experts have told CNN that the lawsuit is deeply flawed and could open the billionaire up to embarrassing revelations during the discovery process.

McDonald's is ditching its hollow plastic McFlurry spoons in the US, it announced Tuesday. McDonald's is replacing them with the smaller spoons used for sundaes, which it says use less plastic. AdvertisementAdvertisementTo make a McFlurry, McDonald's staff pour soft-serve ice cream into a cup and then sprinkle topping onto it. They then insert the hollow plastic spoon, which is attached to a McFlurry machine and used to mix toppings into the ice-cream. "This small change will help reduce single-use plastic waste in restaurants," McDonald's said in a statement.

The use of Eli Lilly 's Mounjaro for weight loss can pull shoppers away from the snack aisle — though the transition will likely be gradual, according to Morgan Stanley. Kaufman noted a six-week study presented at ObesityWeek that showed users of Mounjaro cut calories and weight at a faster clip. The study also produced evidence that medication takers had a "significant reduction in food consumption," as well as fewer cravings for sweets and fast food fats. And while taking Mounjaro reduced food cravings overall, it had a particular impact on sweets, the study found. All four of the snack makers Kaufman said to watch have lost share value in 2023.

Markets could remain under pressure through the end of the year, and high dividend stocks are one option to help investors through the uncertainty, according to Morgan Stanley. Investors are also assessing pressures on the market driven by the surprise attack on Israel by Palestinian militant group Hamas over the weekend. To play another potential breakdown in the market, Morgan Stanley highlighted several dividend stocks that combine yield (how much a company pays out in dividends each year), dividend growth (how much that dividend grows over a period of time) and stability, and that look attractive on a three- to five-year basis. Morgan Stanley projects yields of 9.6% for Energy Transfer in 2024 and 9.9% for MPLX, a master limited partnership created out of Marathon Petroleum that operates crude oil and refined product pipelines. The bank's preference in tobacco is Philip Morris , whose 2024 dividend yield could be 5.5%, according to Morgan Stanley.

When picking dividend-paying stocks to stabilize your portfolio in tumultuous times, don't just go for higher yields — look for the growers, according to Morgan Stanley. Dividend-paying stocks have outperformed nondividend payers across all large-cap sectors going back to 2000, except for consumer discretionary, Morgan Stanley said. Energy Transfer , a company that operates in the natural gas pipeline industry, is rated overweight by Morgan Stanley analyst Robert Kad. Morgan Stanley also likes Mondelez International , the company behind Sour Patch Kids candy and Oreo cookies. Morgan Stanley anticipates banks will be able to grow their dividends about 5% in 2024.

New anti-obesity drugs have the potential to transform public health, while obliterating demand for products and services from the medical, food and fitness industries. Drugs developed by Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) and Eli Lilly (LLY.N) appear to be the first truly effective diet treatments. In one clinical trial, patients taking Eli Lilly’s soon-to-be-launched weight-loss drug lost about 50 pounds (23 kg). Only about a third of those who started taking the drugs for obesity were still doing so a year later, according to one analysis. Yet even as Novo, Lilly and others see their addressable markets expand, some companies will see theirs shrink.

Smucker 's (SJM) decision to buy Twinkie maker Hostess Brands (TWNK) in a deal valued at $5.6 billion. "I like the deal, if only just because I like this channel for Smuckers," Cramer said on "Squawk on the Street." Hostess Brands stock, meanwhile, surged nearly 19%, to more than $33 per share. Reuters reported in August that multiple major food brands such as General Mills (GIS) and Oreo owner Mondelez International (MDLZ) had shown interest in acquiring Hostess. Perhaps the "biggest worry" about acquiring Hostess Brands is the increasing popularity of weight-loss drugs known as GLP-1 agonists, and their potential impact on consumer food preferences, Cramer acknowledged.

The "AI for business" diploma offers training in data and AI for client leaders, practitioners, and WPP executives, according to WPP's website. The team work under AI expert Daniel Hulme who was appointed chief AI officer at WPP two years ago. While lawmakers and philosophers alike still debate whether content produced by generative AI models amounts to anything like human creativity, advertisers have already begun using the technology in their promotional campaigns. Unilever, which owns more than 400 brands including Dove soap and Ben & Jerry's ice cream, has its own generative AI technology that can write product descriptions for retailers' websites and digital commerce sites, it said. The company's TRESemmé haircare brand has used its AI content generator for written content and its automation tool for visual content on Amazon.co.uk (AMZN.O).

New York CNN —The maker of Oreo and Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate is thanking an increased demand for sweets in the first half of the year for its positive forecast, Mondelez (MDLZ) International said in its second quarter earnings call Thursday. It expects a 12% organic net revenue growth compared to an analyst estimate of 10%, driven in part by high demand for its snacks offsetting the high cost of goods. It’s their second quarter in a row of growth. In the second quarter, net revenue increased 17% to $8.51 billion. It’s notable there was strong demand for snacks as extreme weather, the war in Ukraine, avian flu and higher costs along the supply chain increased global food prices.

Mondelez's upbeat forecast came on the back of a strong first quarter and indicated that consumers remained resilient to higher prices for their favorite snack brands. The company said it expects a full-year organic net revenue growth of more than 12% in 2023, up from a prior forecast of more than 10% growth. Oreo-maker Mondelez told Reuters it is "not clear on how they (EU authorities) will control or implement this" law. "It is entirely possible to trace coffee supply chains, despite their complexity.
