Many state governments in the U.S. are working with less room in their budgets. The federal government put over $800 billion to help state governments navigate the pandemic. Virtually every state also increased employee pay for public employees," said Justin Theal, a senior officer at The Pew Charitable Trusts' Fiscal 50 project. Emerging risks, including an aging population, deferred maintenance on infrastructure and more extreme weather threaten state budgets moving forward. Watch the video above to learn more about the fiscal health of state governments.

Research shows that ordering food for delivery has gotten expensive, yet demand remains high. But demand for food delivery has remained high — as has its price. Last week, food delivery company DoorDash, reported an 18% rise in orders year over year in its third quarter of 2024. A food delivery driver previously told BI that he decides to accept or pass on a variety of deliveries often based on the highest upfront tips. But despite lockdowns coming to an end and the country gradually opening back up, people grew accustomed to the trend of ordering food.

In NBC News’ early October national survey, just 4% of registered voters said they didn’t want to make a choice between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. One said they plan to vote for Trump, another that they are likely to vote for Harris, and another plans to not vote at all. How anyone could still be undecided a week out from a critical election can be difficult to fathom for supporters of either Trump or Harris. Eric Bush, a systems administrator from Florida, said he’s waiting until he is in the voting booth to make his final choice. But he is still weighing backing Harris, acknowledging a vote for Harris could lead to bigger-government policies that could help others.

Expect the unexpected in the jobs report

In any other month, the finishing touch would be a clean reading on the labor market from the official jobs report. However, a common thread among economists is that the strikes and hurricanes could take a 100,000-job bite out of the October jobs report. The last time there were back-to-back major hurricanes — Harvey and Irma in 2017 — the forecasts for the following month’s jobs report were for a loss of 33,000 positions. And each contribute to two of the biggest numbers in the monthly jobs report. A key date to keep in mind for the jobs report is October 12, as it anchors the “reference period” for both surveys.

The cheese, worth over $390,000, was taken from London cheese specialist Neal’s Yard Dairy on Oct. 21, the company said in an Instagram post. Three cheeses from three different suppliers were stolen: Hafod Welsh organic cheddar, Westcombe cheddar, and Pitchfork cheddar. Neal's Yard Dairy said that "despite the significant financial blow," they've paid each of their artisan cheesemakers in full for their products. Oliver said that as the world’s most consumed cheese type, a cheddar theft affects exports to 20 different countries. The whereabouts of the stolen cheese have yet to be determined.

Uncomfortable Haley voters weigh their options with Election Day loomingBy Ben KamisarKamala Harris’ deployment of prominent Republican critics of Donald Trump hasn’t convinced a new focus group of voters who backed Nikki Haley in the GOP presidential primary. Such was the reaction among the 11 focus group participants in a new NBC News Deciders Focus Group conducted Monday evening, produced in collaboration with Syracuse University and the research firms Engagious and Sago. “Most of the voters we heard from have known for months which camp they’re in,” she continued. Four of these 11 voters plan to vote for Trump or are leaning that way, with another choosing between Trump and a write-in or third party.

Kamala Harris’ deployment of prominent Republican Trump critics hasn’t convinced a new focus group of voters who backed Nikki Haley in the GOP presidential primary. “It’s repulsive,” said Dale J., a 67-year-old from Minnesota who voted for Trump in 2020 and plans to do so again. "I really liked the idea that Nikki Haley was a woman, and I thought she would have more closer values to mine than Trump. The Commerce Department is expected to report Wednesday that gross domestic product grew at a hardy 3.1% annualized pace in the third quarter, adjusted for seasonality and inflation, according to the Dow Jones consensus forecast. Along with that, the release is expected to show that inflation moved closer or perhaps even below the Federal Reserve's 2% target. The Fed uses the personal consumption expenditures price index, included in the GDP estimate, as its primary inflation gauge. The report, then, should indicate a solid economy and easing inflation , the latter at least on a relative basis from how things looked a year ago. "Overall, another quarter of above-trend growth and a benign inflation reading will be welcomed by the Fed."

For Democrats, President Joe Biden dominated the primaries and faced only token opposition. Vice President Kamala Harris speaks as former President Donald Trump listens during a presidential debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on September 10, 2024. Trump was accused by the Justice Department of election interference after he tried to overturn the 2020 election results. The most populous states are California (54 electoral votes), Texas (40 electoral votes) and Florida (30 electoral votes). The total number of electoral votes, 538, is an even number, which means a tie is conceivable.

British chef Jamie Oliver is on the case of the stolen cheddar. But there are only a small number of real British cheddar makers, Oliver said. The cheeses were from three makers: Hafod Welsh organic cheddar, Westcombe cheddar, and Pitchfork cheddar. Neal’s Yard Dairy, a distributor, wholesaler, and retailer of British artisanal cheese, has asked international cheesemongers to be on the lookout for the stolen cheese, particularly in 10-kilogram (22-pound) and 24-kilogram (52-pound) blocks. “If anyone hears anything about posh cheese going for cheap, it’s probably some wrong’uns,” Oliver said.

Unlike with the hurricane rumor response page, FEMA did not appear to respond to the rumors on its page for the wildfires. By 2009, Alex Jones, perhaps one of the most widely known modern conspiracy theorists, was promoting the false FEMA camps conspiracy theory and deriding those who attempted to debunk it. The FEMA camps conspiracy theory continued throughout the height of the pandemic after President Joe Biden signed various executive orders regarding vaccinations and testing. Ron DeSantis said the plan was “not necessary” and referred to the vaccination sites as “FEMA camps.”Although the FEMA camp conspiracy theory has been shot down again and again, Aniano believes this won’t be the last of it. “The conspiracy theory, it’s going to come up again,” Aniano said.

And now scientists have confirmed a new one: Diverse firefly species lit up the night during the late Mesozoic. The discovery comes from a fossil of an ancient firefly species that was initially discovered in 2016, trapped in 99 million-year-old Burmese amber from northern Myanmar. The beetle is only the second firefly species from the Mesozoic to be identified. Because only one other Cretaceous firefly species has been identified, “this new species can be used to revisit the (July 2022 study) to better date the evolution of fireflies given the new evidence,” he added. China on Monday lowered its main benchmark lending rates by 25 basis points at the monthly fixing. The one-year loan prime rate (LPR) has been cut to 3.1%, while the five-year LPR has been trimmed to 3.6%, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said. The one-year LPR influences corporate loans and most household loans in China, while the five-year LPR serves as a benchmark for mortgage rates. China's central bank governor Pan Gongsheng had indicated on Friday during a forum held in Beijing that the loan prime benchmark rates would be lowered by 20 to 25 basis points. The seven-day reverse repurchase rate will be cut by 20 basis points, while the medium-term lending facility rate will be lowered by 30 basis points, Pan also highlighted.
