Recent polling suggests nearly 9 in 10 Americans believe Mr. Biden’s decision to step aside was the right one. 65 called Mr. Biden’s withdrawal a coup or said it amounted to election interference. These statements have tended to argue that Mr. Biden’s decision to end his candidacy was not his own, was not democratic or both. Some of this language began to bubble up among Republicans even before Mr. Biden announced that he would drop out. One common line of attack, positing that Ms. Harris failed as a “border czar,” is misleading.

Before last week’s Republican convention, Donald Trump seemed to be moving away from the populism that characterized his 2016 campaign. “He’s defending big business, cozying up to billionaires, and wooing C.E.O.s.”When Mr. Trump named Senator JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate, though, pundits quickly concluded that he was doubling down on populism. In his convention speech, Mr. Vance denounced NAFTA and China trade deals and promised to prioritize American workers over multinational corporations. On the other hand, in a long interview with Bloomberg (conducted in late June) that came out after the announcement of Mr. Vance’s selection, Mr. Trump hardly sounded like a firebrand economic populist. He floated the idea of reducing corporate tax rates to 15 percent and said he’d consider the JPMorgan Chase C.E.O., Jamie Dimon, as a potential Treasury secretary.

Obviously, the big political news of the past couple of days has come from the Democratic side. But before last week’s Republican National Convention fades from view, let me focus instead on a development on the G.O.P. Until now, most of the anti-immigration sloganeering coming from Donald Trump and his campaign has involved false claims that we’re experiencing a migrant crime wave. Increasingly, however, Trump and his associates have started making the case that immigrants are stealing American jobs — specifically, the accusation that immigrants are inflicting terrible damage on the livelihoods of Black workers. Of course, the idea that immigrants are taking jobs away from native-born Americans, including native-born Black Americans, isn’t new.

The tight timeline will magnify any missteps Ms. Harris might make but also minimize the chances for a stumble. And in a race that Mr. Trump had been on a trajectory to win, Ms. Harris immediately becomes the ultimate X-factor. She was making the argument for herself but the logic applies to Ms. Harris, too. Her day job is not nearly as demanding as Mr. Biden’s, and she can barnstorm the country at a pace far faster than Mr. Trump has undertaken. And while Ms. Harris did not carve out a reputation in California as an outspoken progressive — her tagline as D.A.

An official Republican presidential nominee who is also the most polarizing figure in modern American history. Growing talk that Donald Trump could win in a landslide. “There are decades when nothing happens, and weeks when decades happen,” Lenin is widely quoted as saying. To me, the tumult raised fears but also offered hopes and potential turning points — the most significant of which is the prospect of President Biden withdrawing from the race, as it seems he’s considering. Trump had a triumphant and exultant week, but his acceptance speech also underscored his lack of discipline and tendency to hail himself as America’s Caesar.

This year’s Republican National Convention was Donald Trump’s third as the party’s nominee, but it was the first that felt like a full expression of a G.O.P. Speakers even made efforts to reach out to unions, Black voters and immigrants — imagining a big-tent Republican Party that could be far more formidable at the ballot box. But if the Democrats were running a strong candidate right now, no Democrat would look at that convention with fear. [You can listen to this episode of “The Ezra Klein Show” on the NYT Audio App, Apple, Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.] In this conversation, moderated by the show’s senior editor, Claire Gordon, we dissect the themes and undercurrents of the convention and what they might signal about a Republican Party in the midst of change.

Opinion Meet the Flip-Flop Club: 7 Republicans Who Kissed the RingClaire Merchlinsky/The New York Times; Images by Mary981, via Getty ImagesYou could call it a glorious moment of party unity. Either way, the Republican Party’s nominating convention was an impressive show of force by its undisputed leader, Donald Trump, who has vanquished all comers to rally his party around the MAGA flag. Heading into the primary elections, plenty of Republicans were desperately casting about for a Trump alternative, and plenty of challengers were auditioning for the position. But you can’t fight the base, and as it became clear that Republican voters were going to stick with Mr. Trump, his skeptics and critics fell into line one by one. is Mr. Trump’s party, now more than ever.

I am far from the only young conservative whose interest in politics was sparked by the issue of abortion. Along the way, many of us found ourselves in the Republican Party, often picking up other conservative causes along the way — low taxes, limited government, strong defense, border security. While traditional social conservatives and the Republican Party might be allies on some key issues, it looks like it is no longer just one political party that wants us to shelve our convictions in the name of political expediency. A secularizing America, plus the shifting composition of the Republican Party, means many G.O.P. Many young conservatives, in particular, seem more enthusiastic about owning the libs than strengthening the family.

Just over seven months ago, the talented pseudonymous writer Trace Woodgrains wrote an essay announcing the Republican Party’s doom — not the doom of electoral irrelevance, since the G.O.P. Vance as Donald Trump’s running mate and the recent surge of support for Trump’s campaign from Silicon Valley, Woodgrains reconsidered the durability of his diagnosis. The Vance pick, he wrote, suggests that “the G.O.P. is looking to make an appeal to anti-woke Silicon Valley or finance types to fill the void left by the Republican Party’s competency crisis,” with Vance himself as an exemplar of what a right-leaning counter-elite might look like. suddenly has more support in Silicon Valley than in 2020 or 2016.

Hamas’s brutal massacre in Israel and Israel’s retaliatory war in Gaza crashed into the Republican National Convention in prime time Wednesday night, as former President Donald J. Trump’s Republican Party moved to make Israel’s fight its own — and to further fracture the Democratic Party’s longstanding bond with American Jews. A coterie of fresh-faced fraternity brothers from the University of North Carolina was invited onstage to be celebrated for defending the American flag from pro-Palestinian protesters who had tried to take it down. An Orthodox Jewish student from Harvard, Shabbos Kestenbaum, castigated the Democratic Party he once supported as “ideologically poisoned” by “far-left antisemitic extremism.”And Orna and Ronen Neutra, the parents of an American citizen still held by Hamas in Gaza, led the crowd in a chant of “bring them home,” after recounting how Mr. Trump had called them after their son was taken hostage.

For the last eight years, President Trump has given everything he has to fight for the people of our country. And then President Trump flew to Milwaukee and got back to work. Donald J. Trump long ago decided he wanted a very different Republican Party platform in 2024. It was only then that the delegates received a copy of the platform language the Trump team had meticulously prepared, which slashed the platform size by nearly three-quarters. “This is something that ultimately you’ll pass,” Mr. Trump told the delegates by phone and made audible to the room, according to a person who was there and who was not authorized to speak publicly. “You’ll pass it quickly.”He was right. Within hours, the platform committee had endorsed a document that Mr. Trump had personally dictated parts of, according to two people with direct knowledge of the events, and it all happened before the delegates got their phones back.

The horrible assassination attempt on Donald Trump has underscored Joe Biden’s dire political situation. Americans hope the awful events in Butler, Pa., will inspire the reversal of our ever-coarsening political culture, as Mr. Biden called for on Sunday night. Nonetheless, politics will march forward — and have no doubt, Mr. Biden is losing this race. The total war between Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden has now raged for eight years and exhausted our nation. Joe Biden cannot offer that.

For a third night, thousands of Republican delegates, donors and party leaders crowded into the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee to celebrate former President Donald J. Trump’s campaign to return to the White House. Though the event began just two days after an assassination attempt against him, the mood was boisterous, with attendees donning makeshift ear bandages in support of him. Mr. Trump’s vice-presidential pick, Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, along with Donald Trump, Jr., were slated to headline a night of speeches mostly focused on foreign policy. Vance of Ohio to be his running mate is the latest example of the former president’s willingness to flout political convention. But then Mr. Trump has never been a traditional candidate. The last time Mr. Trump named a running mate, he had more pressing concerns. Mr. Trump selected Mike Pence, who had close ties to evangelical Christian voters and had served 12 years in Congress, to allay their fears. The idea was that he could help Mr. Trump deal with insiders and power brokers.

ceased to be a normal political party in 2016 and became a cult of personality, less interested in winning elections than in burnishing the savior-victim myth of its charismatic leader. As a cult, the party could never realistically allow any other Republican to successfully challenge Trump for the nomination. And as a nominee, Trump would only gain strength once the extent of President Biden’s mental decline became obvious. It fails to reckon with the Biden administration’s political blunders. And it reduces the Democrats’ problem to a Biden problem.

There is no place in America for this kind of violence — for any violence ever, period. “I’m sincerely grateful that he’s doing well and recovering,” Mr. Biden said. And the White House said that Mr. Biden would keep his campaign events in Las Vegas. Mr. Biden will speak at an NAACP conference on Tuesday and a UnidosUS conference on Wednesday, even as Mr. Trump and his party hold the Republican convention in Milwaukee. In both sets of remarks on Sunday, Mr. Biden made a plea that — if recent history is any guide — seemed unlikely to be heeded by activists on either side of the nation’s increasingly bitter divide.

When you’re paid in tips, you’re never really sure if you’ll make rent. At a rally last month in Nevada, Donald Trump announced that, if elected, he would exempt tips from federal taxes. 6 is “Large tax cuts for workers, and no tax on tips!” Republicans in Congress are already working on a bill designed to do just that. Last week, they introduced “Tax Free Tips Act of 2024,” which would end federal income and employment taxes on tips. The other half, which earns less than 32,000, already don’t pay federal taxes on their income.

For nearly nine years, Donald J. Trump has been the singular face of Republican politics and the undisputed leader of the Make America Great Again movement. Vance as Mr. Trump’s running mate, a politician nearly 40 years his junior, immediately vaults the first-term senator to the forefront of a G.O.P. If elected in November, Mr. Trump, 78, can serve only a single term — the 22nd Amendment states that no person shall be elected president more than twice — a rarity for a candidate naming a potential vice president. Mr. Vance, 39, is the first millennial to make a major presidential ticket, a Marine veteran and a politician who has thoroughly remade himself as a full-throated MAGA enthusiast. In recent months, it was Mr. Vance’s aggressive defense of Trumpism and Mr. Trump, even on mainstream news outlets, that helped him stand out for the former president as a worthy inheritor.

While President Biden enjoys strong support from Black voters, Donald Trump has chipped away at that crucial Democratic base: He won 12 percent of Black voters in the 2020 election and did especially well with Black men, winning 19 percent. Some pollsters think Mr. Trump may do even better in November. This focus group was held last week, before the assassination attempt on Mr. Trump. But they also said that some of their friends and relatives sharply disagreed with them about Mr. Trump. For these men, Mr. Trump is not just the more appealing choice but also the sole realistic option, given “how off track the president is mentally,” as one participant said.

Donald J. Trump’s presidency was a major turn away from the Republican Party’s long embrace of free-market economics. If the Republican platform is any indication, a second Trump term would be a near-complete abandonment. The platform does not directly mention fiscal deficits, and, apart from curbing government spending, it does not make any clear and detailed promises to rein in the nation’s borrowing. Other policies it proposes — including cutting taxes and expanding the military — would most likely swell the nation’s debt. The Republican platform also does not mention exports or encouraging trade.

As the Republican convention opens on Monday, Democrats find themselves in a state of suspended animation and dread that the election could be tilting further away from President Biden. While there have been no new public calls from congressional Democrats for Mr. Biden to drop out since the assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump on Saturday, many in the party maintain grave concerns about the president’s ability to win. The last three weeks have been a cascade of fast-moving and damaging events for Mr. Biden. The shooting on Saturday complicated what Mr. Biden’s campaign believes is one of its most potent campaign messages: that Mr. Trump poses an immediate and active threat to American democracy. Mr. Trump’s in-the-moment response — the raised fist and bloodied face that instantly became a defining image — sent Democrats into yet another tailspin.

Donald Trump has held a consistent and widening lead over President Biden in all the battleground states. In short, Republicans have good reason to think they’ll be back in the White House next January. Three in particular: First, Trump won’t slay the left; instead, he will re-energize and radicalize it. Second, Trump will be a down-ballot loser, leading to divided and paralyzed government. The results won’t be ones old-school Republicans want or expect.

When Donald J. Trump ran for president in 2016, the official Republican platform called for imposing “firm caps on future debt” to “accelerate the repayment of the trillions we now owe.”When Mr. Trump sought a second term in 2020, the party’s platform pummeled Democrats for refusing to help Republicans rein in spending and proposed a constitutional requirement that the federal budget be balanced. Those ambitions were cast aside in the platform that the Republican Party unveiled this week ahead of its convention. Nowhere in the 16-page document do the words “debt” or “deficit” as they relate to the nation’s grim fiscal situation appear. The platform included only a glancing reference to slashing “wasteful” spending, a perennial Republican talking point. To budget hawks who have spent years warning that the United States is spending more than it can afford, the omissions signaled the completion of a Republican transformation from a party that once espoused fiscal restraint to one that is beholden to the ideology of Mr. Trump, who once billed himself the “king of debt.”
