The Fed is expected to start cutting rates in mid-September, not long before voters in the United States head to the polls to elect a new president. Central bankers will meet about rates again on Nov. 6-7, just days after the election. If they lower interest rates before the vote, there is a risk that Republicans will cast it as a politicized move meant to help Democrats: Lower borrowing costs can bolster the economy and markets. Former President Donald J. Trump, the Republican nominee, has already said the Fed should not be cutting rates leading up to November. But central bankers have been clear that they plan to set interest rates with an eye on inflation and job market data, while trying to ignore the election entirely.

Ed Bastian, chief executive officer of Delta Air Lines Inc., during an interview in New York, US, on Monday, Nov. 7, 2022. Bastian said that he sees 'strong demand' for flights carrying into 2023. Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said the massive IT outage earlier this month that stranded thousands of customers will cost it $500 million. The airline canceled more than 4,000 flights in the wake of the outage, which was caused by a botched CrowdStrike software update and took thousands of Microsoft systems around the world offline. Other airlines recovered faster, and Delta's cascading disruptions and customer response sparked an investigation by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Federal regulators have determined that Amazon can be held responsible for defective goods sold by third-party merchants on its online marketplace, rejecting the company's position that it's merely an intermediary between consumers and sellers. Amazon's marketplace, which hosts millions of third-party sellers, now accounts for approximately 60% of the company's e-commerce sales. The company has previously said it invests hundreds of millions of dollars per year to ensure products sold are safe and compliant. At issue were 418,818 goods sold through Amazon, including faulty carbon monoxide detectors, hairdryers without electrocution protection and children's sleepwear that posed a burn risk. This program gives Amazon "far-reaching control" over the products sold on its platform, the judge said.

For the next 99 days, until Election Day on Nov. 5, this newsletter will dedicate a section to the 2024 election, keeping you up to speed. Today, President Biden, in his first major event since opting out of his re-election run, called on Congress to impose 18-year term limits on Supreme Court justices and create an enforceable code of ethics on the justices. He also proposed a constitutional amendment that would reverse the court’s recent ruling giving presidents broad immunity from criminal conviction. House Speaker Mike Johnson called the proposal “dead on arrival.” Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, said she supported Biden’s effort.

However, Ford went 0 for 2 on Wednesday as an old enemy in warranty expenses returned to bite the Blue Oval. And it's an even more unfortunate setback because Ford management said on its April earnings call that the company has made "real progress" on its goal of making better vehicles. The best story at Ford remains Ford Pro , the unit that houses the company's fleet and commercial vehicles. But last quarter management said the business was tracking toward the higher end of the range, and that no longer appears to be the case. I’m still waiting to wake up and realize that it was all a dream: the debate, the attempted assassination, President Biden’s Rehoboth reckoning, the quicksilver ascent of Vice President Kamala Harris. I have teachers texting and calling me from out of state who have never donated to a political candidate asking how to do it the right way to ensure it gets to the Harris campaign. It feels very “hopey changey.” I tuned in (along with hundreds of thousands of others) to watch Harris speak to the staff at campaign headquarters and walked away inspired. The transition from Biden to Harris has been remarkably seamless and successful. Her initial remarks on Monday were strong, powerful and clearly her own words, not things cribbed from the previous campaign.

The selloff in the Nasdaq on Wednesday, more specifically in semiconductor stocks, has added a relatively new wrinkle to what has been an unexpectedly exceptional year for stocks: political risk. Ozy Media and founder Carlos Watson were convicted of fraud by a Brooklyn federal jury on Tuesday, in a case accusing them of lying to investors about the now-defunct startup’s finances and sham deals with Google and Oprah Winfrey. Watson, a former cable news anchor and investment banker, and Ozy were each convicted of securities fraud conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy, while Watson was also convicted of identity theft. The verdict follows a six-week trial that featured testimony by two former Watson deputies, who pleaded guilty to fraud. Trump victory trades to swell after shooting, investors say
  + stars: | 2024-07-14 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
Saturday's shooting at U.S. former President Donald Trump's election rally raises his odds of winning back the White House, and trades betting on his victory will increase this coming week, investors said on Sunday. Trump was shot in the ear during the rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday in what the authorities were treating as an assassination attempt. The first shooting of a U.S. president or major party candidate since a 1981 assassination attempt on Republican President Ronald Reagan could upend the Nov. 5 rematch between Republican Trump and President Joe Biden, a Democrat, which has been tight in opinion polls. World leaders and U.S. politicians condemned the shooting, while some industry executives, including Tesla chief Elon Musk, declared their support for Trump. Investors also expect an extension of corporate and personal tax cuts expiring next year, fuelling concerns about rising budget deficits under Trump.
