Barnett says the amount of research she and Andrews poured into their relocation project prompted them to start their own travel company, Expatsi, to help other Americans explore their options to move abroad. Launching a travel company for American expatsBarnett and Andrews went back to basics to figure out what city to live in. In March 2024, Barnett and Andrews led a group of 30 Americans around Portugal for 10 days and Spain for 12 on their inaugural Expatsi scouting trip. Americans who dream of moving abroad are getting help from travel companies like Expatsi, which offers scouting trips to international cities. So far, Expatsi travelers have mostly been women ranging in age from 22 to 80 with a cluster around 40 to 65, Barnett says.

Read previewOne day in January 2022, it hit me: I had outgrown my life in Japan. My first few years in Japan were exciting and dreamy, what many would expect when they imagine living in Japan. I visited stunning shrines and temples, sipped oolong-hai cocktails with friends in izakayas, spent hours exploring the streets of Shibuya — back then, Japan felt like my playground. Of course, I'm still new to the Netherlands, and I know my feelings may change with time — as they did in Japan. For now, I've decided that living in the Netherlands is what my dream life looks like.

Zumper analyzed median asking rents for apartment listings in the largest 100 U.S. cities by population. Rents have also risen by at least 10% for both one- and two-bedroom apartments in other major metros: Lincoln, Nebraska; Chicago; Buffalo, New York; Madison, Wisconsin; Rochester, New York; and New York City, according to Zumper. What causes rent inflationAt a high level, rent inflation is guided by supply-and-demand dynamics, said Crystal Chen, an analyst who authored the Zumper analysis. Basically, areas with fast-growing rents are seeing demand outstrip the supply of available apartments, while those with falling rents have seen their apartment inventories growing. Rent inflation has fallen substantiallyRent inflation plummeted in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dutch digital bank Bunq is plotting re-entry into the U.K. to tap into a "large and underserved" market of some 2.8 million British "digital nomads." Bunq, known for its rainbow-colored cards and a focus on so-called "digital nomads" not bound by any one country or location, initially launched in the U.K. in 2019. The passage of Brexit into law meant that EU-based financial institutions couldn't rely on their own country authorizations to operate in the U.K. market. Currently, Bunq only holds a banking license with the Dutch central bank. Challenges of reentering UK market

During our drink, he suggested we rent our house and travel for six months. Renting our Palo Alto home wasn't that simple; this was before the era of Airbnb and digital nomads. Shorter trips help me to break up the monotony of life without sacrificing the comfort of home. Of course, it was worth it in the end to save money so that I could travel for nine months. However, now that I take a few shorter trips a year, I have more flexibility to make them everything I want them to be. In fact, when I got back, I was able to create a space that took inspiration from the places I'd been. I think traveling is something everyone should prioritize, but there are ways to see the world that don't involve doing it full time.

With opulent graves but no written records, the empire and its people have remained largely in the shadows of history until recently. But a landmark April 2022 study involving ancient DNA taken from the graves of the Avar elite shed light on the empire’s far-flung origins. A tiny sample is drilled from a bone at the ancient DNA laboratory at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. In the case of men, researchers found two partners in 10 cases, three partners in four cases and four partners in one case. “Polygamy (having multiple marriage partners), serial monogamous marriages and extramarital relations are all possible explanations,” she said.

"We realized we couldn't afford the mortgage and the car payments and everything," Stonestreet told me. Americans work more, vacation less, spend more on healthcare, and die sooner than people in other high-income economies. These factors likely explain why some Americans are moving to countries that aren't generally considered low-cost-of-living locales. She said that living abroad afforded her a degree of flexibility and spontaneity that would be out of reach back home.
