RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — In a closing message to voters in this year's closely watched Virginia legislative elections, Republican Gov. Virginia is one of four states — the others are Louisiana, Mississippi and New Jersey — with legislative elections this year. The legislative candidates are running this year under maps redrawn during the last redistricting. He said he was “cautiously confident” about the possibility of a GOP trifecta — both legislative chambers as well as the governorship. Biden, who has not announced any plans to campaign in Virginia before Tuesday, recently sent a fundraising email on behalf of Virginia candidates and issued nearly two dozen endorsements.

Taco Bell didn’t reveal if a financial settlement was involved. “The response we’ve seen over the last six months since taking action to free ‘Taco Tuesday’ is the exact reason we felt it was worth freeing it in the first place,” Taco Bell’s chief marketing officer Taylor Montgomery told CNN. However, Gregory’s owners proved harder to persuade, and they said that Taco Bell made them “look bad” during an August giveaway of free tacos. “For Gregory’s Restaurant and Bar, ‘Taco Tuesday’ brought a lot of pride over the past 40 years,” said co-owner Gregory Gregory. Therefore, I am not surprised that the Gregory’s waived the white flag and surrendered its trademark registration.”Gregory’s surrender marks the final hurdle of Taco Bell’s legal battle of eliminating the trademark from its two holders.

PinnedRepresentative Jim Jordan of Ohio failed for a third time on Friday morning to win election as House speaker, leaving his party with no consensus on a way forward and the chamber paralyzed in the face of growing pressure to get back to business. Three Republicans from swing districts won by President Biden — Representative Marc Molinaro of New York, Representative Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Representative Tom Kean of New Jersey — abandoned Mr. Jordan after supporting him earlier. There is no consensus among Republicans about an alternative candidate to Mr. Jordan, who has yet to show any inclination to drop out of the race. The House has been in a state of chaos for 18 days after hard-right rebels ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Mr. Jordan then received his party’s nomination to be speaker, but he failed to win the post in votes by the full House on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Shares of United Airlines tumbled more than 7% on Wednesday morning and took the rest of the industry down with them after the carrier gave a gloomy outlook for fourth-quarter profit, which will be reduced by rising jet fuel prices. In addition, United's revenue could be disappointing the longer that flights to Israel are suspended for the Israel-Hamas war. United reported after the market closed Tuesday that it earned $1.14 billion in the third quarter, beating Wall Street expectations for profit and revenue. Investors, however, focused immediately on the airline's prediction that fourth-quarter earnings would be between $1.50 and $1.80 per share, well below analysts' forecast of $2.09 per share. All three suspended their service shortly after Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7.

The pay transparency movement is relatively new. For one, pay transparency may lower overall wages of the broader population of employees, even while raising them for the "inequitably underpaid," Obloj and Zenger said. Wealthy Americans ages 26 to 35 are moving to Florida, Texas, and New Jersey. This was in contrast to the over 5,000 net young high earners who left New York, which still had the highest count of young high earners of any state. Despite losses of nearly 2,700 high earners, New Jersey netted over 1,000 wealthy, young professionals. Connecticut, which ranked sixth for net migration of young high earners, had a similar trend compared with all high earners. Washington, DC, exceeded Washington state at 16%, even though it lost nearly 700 young, wealthy professionals.

Workers who go on strike generally don't qualify for unemployment benefits. But two states — New York and New Jersey — are the exception to that rule, and other states could soon join them. Despite the growing concern of heat-related illnesses and climate change, people have far fewer protections from power shutoffs during the summer than they do in the winter. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP, has about $6 billion in funds for fiscal 2023, which runs through September. The association is calling on Congress to provide an additional $3 billion for cooling assistance this summer, which would help about 6 million households. And it is asking utilities to voluntarily suspend shutoffs this summer for those behind on their bills. Florida Power & Light, for instance, has a longstanding policy that it won’t disconnect customers if it’s 95 degrees or higher.

“I’m not a fair-weather friend,” Pate told CNN in a telephone interview Monday evening. The event – planned for Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey — has been billed as the first major fundraising event of his presidential campaign. CNN has previously reported that Trump is expected to make remarks from Bedminster before the fundraiser. Owners have three years to pay the taxes and have an opportunity to repurchase the seized properties.

For three straight days, people in sports jerseys of various colors moved in, out and around Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan. But for fans of five teams in two sports in one metropolitan area, it was a hub for that incomparable and captivating springtime buzz: the playoffs. Across the United States and Canada, many cities are hosting playoff games in professional basketball and hockey. But nowhere is the action more abundant than in the greater New York area, where all five professional winter-season teams were in the postseason. Along the way, all five teams played dates in that one arena during the playoffs.
NEWARK, New Jersey — Faced with congested airports, rising costs, a pilot shortage and a resurgence in travel demand, airlines are increasingly turning to the same remedy: bigger planes that fit more passengers. In April, U.S. carriers have 0.6% more seats in their domestic schedules compared with the same month of 2019, despite operating 10.6% fewer flights. For example, United Airlines said its flights have 20 more seats per departure in its full network than in 2019. Early in the Covid pandemic, U.S. airlines reassigned their largest jets for domestic routes when international travel was hobbled by the crisis and travel restrictions. And, Cox noted, there are limits to how many flights the airline can upgauge, especially with its largest planes.
Bed Bath & Beyond is closing 43 stores, two warehouses, and one fulfillment center in New Jersey. New layoff rules go into effect on April 10 in the state, which could have cost the company millions. On the morning of Tuesday, January 10, Bed Bath & Beyond CEO Sue Gove offered a rosy update about the company's turnaround strategy during its third-quarter earnings call. Representatives for Bed Bath & Beyond did not respond to Insider's question about whether the law influenced the timing of its New Jersey closures. Unlike prior cuts in which as many as 12 weeks of severance pay were given, Bed Bath & Beyond workers in several states affected by this round of layoffs tell Insider they will receive nothing.
Package theft is a staple of the e-commerce age, and is more common in some states than others. And even if they had logged the theft with police, the crime of package theft is filed and charged differently depending on the location. Oklahoma — Package theft can be charged as a felony if the perpetrator is convicted of three instances within 60 days. There isn't much of a correlation between the states cracking down on package theft and the places that experience it. Only one of the top 10 metro areas experiencing the most package theft is in a state where porch piracy is a felony.
