Close up stack of gold bars, financial wealth concepts and businessGold is in a "new bullish phase" after prices notched another record high, said asset management firm Sprott Asset Management, echoing other analysts who have predicted that the bullion will continue to scale new heights. Spot gold is currently trading at $2,729.14 per ounce, while gold futures are at $2,741.20. "Rising U.S. debt-to-GDP ratios have historically led to higher gold prices due to concerns over the sustainability of debt, currency devaluation and debt monetization," Wong continued. As debt increases, governments might resort to printing money to address deficits, which can devalue the currency, Wong explained. This erosion of trust in fiat currency enhances gold's appeal as a reliable store of value.

South Korea says 1,500 North Korean troops have been sent to aid Russia in its war in Ukraine. They also said that North Korean troops could find themselves little more than cannon fodder. Other experts said North Korean troops would experience the roughest end of Russia's notoriously brutal military hierarchy, which marks some as expendable. "The grim reality is that the North Korean troops will likely simply be cannon fodder for Russia," said Edward Howell, a North Korea expert at the University of Oxford. AdvertisementHoare also pointed to the risk of North Korean troops defecting, which would loom over any deployment.

Russia is unlikely to offer military intervention against Israel on behalf of the Iranians, Saab said, given it is already "too bogged down in Ukraine." In return for Iran's support, Russia has bolstered Iran's military capabilities in several areas, they noted: "Iran has made notable progress in acquiring advanced conventional weaponry from Russia, allowing it to achieve some of its defense officials' long-standing goals. Iranian protesters shout anti-Israeli slogans while burning an Israeli flag in a celebration for Iran's missile attack against Israel, in Tehran, Iran, on October 1, 2024. That shared antipathy toward the U.S. and desire to create a "new world order" are what largely binds Iran and Russia. Russia cannot — and will not — save Iran in its confrontation with Israel and the United States," he noted.

"Despite all the soft-landing and Fed rate cut optimism, the S & P 500 up almost 40% y/y has simply over-shot," he wrote in a note to clients. Strategist Jonathan Golub raised his 2025 S & P 500 target to 6,400 from 6,000 in a note to clients released Tuesday. "UBS economists forecast 3.7% nominal GDP in 2025 (1.6% real), roughly in line with long-term averages," he said. Golub also noted that a "sharp decline in Fed Funds will likely increase profit margins by 20 [basis points] via lower interest expense." The Fed lowered its benchmark fed funds rates a half a point, to a range of 4.75% to 5.0%, in September. Bottom line: Stocks could consolidate to end 2024 before scaling new heights in the new year, based on UBS' outlook.

In a battle of the quarterbacks, Chicago Bears signal-caller Caleb Williams reached new heights in his team’s 35-16 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Williams also showed off his skills as a runner, like on this 24-yard scramble in the second quarter. After a slow start to the season, Williams’ game has steadily progressed. Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has outperformed Williams so far this season, but the gap has closed considerably the last few weeks. After Sunday’s game, Williams has now thrown for 1,317 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions.

The most luxurious experience of them all, however, could be found in the dining car. The latter was the first train car to offer on-board meals, including regional specialties like gumbo, which were prepared in a 3-foot-by-6 foot kitchen. By the 1870s, dining cars could be found on sleeper trains across North America. But this decentralized production model also contained the seed of dining car’s ultimate demise. And despite a revival of interest in train travel on the continent, dining cars (or certainly those equipped with kitchens) are now largely the preserve of tourist services.

The Israeli military on Monday warned civilians in southern Lebanon to move away from Hezbollah positions as it intensified attacks on its neighbor. "Shortly, the IDF will engage in extensive, precise strikes, against terror targets which have been embedded widely throughout Lebanon," Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said early Monday in a statement. The warning is the first of its kind issued by the IDF in Lebanon, an Israeli military official told NBC News, adding the present campaign only involves aerial strikes. Israel, the official said, wants to create safe conditions for its own citizens to return to the northern part of the country, and destroy Hezbollah's infrastructure in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military is also looking into reports that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, was killed in a recent Israeli airstrike, an Israeli official told NBC News.

Read previewIf Qualcomm sees it through, its takeover bid of Intel would likely be the biggest in Silicon Valley history. The possibility of Intel handing its 56-year history over to a younger rival emerged last week after several reports said that California-based semiconductor firm Qualcomm had made a takeover approach. That said, not everyone is convinced that Qualcomm needs Intel — or that a buyout would be a good idea for either company. My industry survey also indicates that Qualcomm is currently in takeover talks with Intel. A Qualcomm bid for Intel could face similar regulatory obstacles to the takeover attempt Nvidia made for Arm in 2020 and later abandoned in 2022.
