Now, a new study has found those who experience more gratitude also have a lower risk of dying. All three of us were turning left — two flesh-and-blood drivers and my robot — when the two humans violated a basic traffic rule by swinging wide and turning into the right hand lane. The Tesla hugged the inside lane, as the driver manual indicates is the proper rule of the road. On the other hand, my son is less likely than the Tesla’s software to suddenly disengage and just stop steering altogether (requiring me to take over). Some 30% to 40% of people with depression do not experience symptom improvement after trying one treatment, according to the study. And about 30% of people diagnosed with depression go on to experience treatment-resistant depression when the disorder doesn’t improve after multiple treatment attempts. Mapping depression in the brainThe authors used data from 801 adult participants who were previously diagnosed with depression or anxiety, and 137 healthy control group participants. The grant supports a five-year project involving 4,500 participants, which is centered on the development of a better diagnosis and treatment tool for depression biotypes. This method isn’t intended to replace or be the primary choice for assessments of individual cases of depression, Williams said.

Fatherhood changed him; it gave his life purpose, he said. My research lab investigates how the brain changes when men become fathers, and we are discovering that fatherhood can be transformative for their brains and bodies. Not only that, but men’s involvement in fatherhood can have long-term benefits for their brain health — and for healthy societies. But the transition to fatherhood can also be a time of vulnerability, which is why supporting fathers should be a priority for policymakers. Our results echoed studies of mothers done by some of the same researchers.
