Jared Polis said Colorado will no longer bus asylum-seekers to New York City and Chicago after the mayors of both cities demanded a halt to the policy. “The majority of migrants have a final destination other than Denver,” Polis' office said in a statement last week. While reversing his decision, Polis also set aside $5 million in state money to help provide assistance to the migrants, Denver officials said Monday. "We respectfully demand that you cease and desist sending migrants to New York City and Chicago." New York City has already taken in more than 38,000 migrants in the last nine months, Adams' office said Monday.
On the busy day-after-Christmas travel day, Southwest Airlines canceled more than 2,700 flights, frustrating passengers across the country. Overall, around 3,900 flights were canceled within, into or out of the U.S. on Monday, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware. Southwest had 2,893 flights canceled at one point Monday, or 70% of its schedule, according to the site. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday combined, over 8,200 flights into, out of or within the U.S. were canceled, according to FlightAware. The issue with Southwest flights also caught the attention of the Transportation Department, which called the airline's performance unacceptable.
Chicago police are investigating the deaths of a man and his adult daughter discovered Wednesday in an apartment where her 2-year-old boy was found unharmed. She said the dead adults were “family members” and described the incident as “isolated,” noting the public was not in danger. NBC Chicago reported the dead family members are Curtis Hardman and Javonni Jenkins. NBC Chicago also reported police said the family members were fatally shot. Germaine Owens, Jenkins’ cousin, told NBC Chicago: “She didn’t deserve this.
A bullet found near the bodies of two teenage girls who were killed in Delphi, Indiana, has been linked to a gun belonging to the suspect in their 2017 deaths, newly unsealed court documents revealed. On Feb. 13, 2017, investigators believe Abby and Libby were dropped off at around 1:49 p.m. near an entrance to the Delphi Historic Trail. "As the male subject approaches Victim 1 and Victim 2, one of the victims mentions 'gun'," according to the document. "Near the end of the video a male is seen and heard telling the girls, 'Guys, down the hill.' Analysis performed by the Indiana State Police laboratory of the weapon determined that the .40 caliber unspent round found near the girls' bodies was allegedly fired from Allen's pistol, according to the document.
The principal of a prominent Chicago high school has been removed from his duties over the handling of a student's German military officer costume on Halloween. A student donned the outfit for a costume contest on Halloween at Jones College Prep high school — an act “widely recognized by many students, staff” as “antisemitic,” Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez said in a statement Friday. “This incident caused harm to many students and staff, and it is completely inconsistent with our values as a school district. NBC News has reached out to Powers and the high school for comment. This isn’t Powers' first controversy at the elite selective enrollment high school near the city’s downtown.
A Chicago mural celebrating Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, and his roots in the city has been painted over as the artist continues to face backlash over his recent antisemitic comments. Video shared on social media appeared to show the West Loop mural being painted over with black paint. "Very crazy I’m witnessing this right now.. they’re painting over the Kanye mural in Chicago," the Twitter user who posted the video wrote. Later footage captured by NBC Chicago showed the final product, with Ye's image transformed into a silhouette. In addition to the Chicago mural being covered, the Wieners Circle, a local eatery famed for its mean customer service, made clear Ye was not welcome at the establishment.
A 17-year-old teen died unexpectedly after he collapsed while singing a solo in a choir event in Naperville, Illinois, on Friday, his family and officials said. An Indiana Catholic school teacher was arrested on Thursday after officials said they found she kept a "kill list" and threatened her students, according to NBC Chicago. Carrasquillo-Torres also told the students about the "kill list," adding that they were at the bottom of the list. Carrasquillo-Torres was escorted to the principal’s office following the student’s report, in which the teacher admitted to making the statements to the student and having a kill list. She did not provide the list to the principal, but did name a specific student on the list, NBC Chicago reported. East Chicago police arrested Carrasquillo-Torres Thursday morning at her home after an emergency detention order was approved, according to NBC Chicago.
A 3-year-old boy has died after he was pushed into Lake Michigan in Chicago by his aunt, officials said. The child was pulled from the water by emergency personnel and transported to a hospital in critical condition, police said. Moreno was denied bail at a court hearing Wednesday where the defense argued that she has mental health issues, NBC Chicago reported. Prosecutors said that Moreno lives in Des Plaines, a Chicago suburb, with her family and left the house with Josiah without anyone else knowing. He was in the water for 30 minutes when divers pulled him out from the bottom of the lake, according to prosecutors.
Single tax filers qualify for funds up to $250, heads of household up to $375 and couples filing jointly up to $500. While most of the rebate checks from earlier this year have been mailed out already, the newer bonus checks are currently being processed. To receive the rebates, residents must file their 2020 and 2021 tax returns by Dec. 31, 2022. Charlie Baker announced that tax rebate checks will be sent to full-year residents who file a 2021 tax return on or before Oct. 17, 2022. No action is needed, as residents receive these payments automatically by direct deposit or check.
Emmett Till's family disputes the version of events recounted in a recently leaked memoir by the white woman who accused Till of making unwanted advances toward her before his lynching in 1955. Till, 14, of Chicago, was visiting family when he entered the store in Money, Mississippi, where Donham, then 21, was working.
