CNN —Russia is nearing a presidential election that is all but certain to extend Vladimir Putin’s rule throughout this decade and into the 2030s. The president’s dominance over the Russian electoral system has already been reinforced as the election looms. Voting will be held from Friday March 15 until Sunday March 17, the first Russian presidential election to take place over three days. The region makes up more than a third of Russia’s total territory but has only about 5% of its population. In order to vote against Putin, you just need to vote for any other candidate,” Navalny said on February 8.

He appears to be flexing his unrivaled power with performative cruelty and firmly twisting the knife after Navalny's death. "That's an extraordinary power, and Putin did it effectively, making sure it wound up in the news." AdvertisementThe display of power by the Russian state, while jarring, is not out of the norm for Putin's regime, which has been accused of assassinations abroad for decades. Both Navalny's and the pilot's deaths fit Putin's playbook to a T, exemplifying the lengths to which the Russian regime will go to maintain the illusion of total power, Schmidt said. CNN —There are emerging signs of a deep schism in the Republican Party over how or even whether the US should stand up to authoritarianism in Russia. With a not-so-subtle nod to Trump’s failure to criticize Russia for Navalny’s death, she compared elections in democracies to those in autocracies. Compare it with House Speaker Mike Johnson, who, at Trump’s behest, is refusing to bow to pressure to allow a vote on US aid to Ukraine. If it is clear where Haley and Trump stand on opposing Russia and helping Ukraine, what’s in Johnson’s mind is a secret. “If there is a Mike Johnson plan, there aren’t any House Republicans that are aware of its existence.” Read their full report.

The White House plans to announce new sanctions against Russia in response to the death of the high-profile Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny last week, National Security Spokesman John Kirby said Tuesday. "In response, at President Biden's direction, we will be announcing a major sanctions package on Friday of this week." Kirby noted that the new sanctions will build on the ongoing effort to stifle Russia's economy, while also adding specific restrictions over Navalny's death. The aftermath of Navalny's death comes while Congress is on recess and a $95 billion aid package with significant Ukraine funding remains deadlocked. Kirby said that Navalny's death highlighted the need for Congress to end the stalemate and pass the funding package to bolster Ukraine's defense against Russia.

The X social media platform on Tuesday restored the account of Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, after a brief suspension. X, formerly Twitter, said the site's defense mechanism against manipulation and spam had "mistakenly flagged" Navalnaya's account as violating its rules. "We unsuspended the account as soon as we became aware of the error, and will be updating the defense," X Safety said in a post on Tuesday. Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation had earlier tagged Elon Musk in a post to ask "exactly which rules were violated" by Navalnaya. AdvertisementAlexey Navalny, a dissident and the political nemesis of Russian President Vladimir Putin, spent the past few years of his life behind bars but still managed to stay connected to the outside world. In a letter sent to a friend, a photographer named Evgeny Feldman, Navalny said former President Donald Trump's agenda for a second term was "really scary," according to the Times. He said if President Joe Biden were to have a health issue, "Trump will become president," adding: "Doesn't this obvious thing concern the Democrats?" The journalist Sergei Parkhomenko said he received a letter from Navalny on February 13, a few days before Navalny's death was announced. Trump, for his part, didn't mention Navalny in the days after his death, despite condemnations from other leaders who directly blamed Putin.

Many world leaders blamed President Vladimir Putin and his government for Navalny’s death Friday at age 47. Navalny’s team said he was “murdered,” and charged that officials' refusal to hand over his body was part of a cover-up. Yarmysh said that Navalny's mother and his lawyers weren't allowed into the morgue in Salekhard on Monday morning. The U.S. and British ambassadors also mourned Navalny's death at a memorial in Moscow. Read previewWhen President Joe Biden addressed the sudden death of Russian dissident Alexey Navalny last week, he had no doubt where the blame lay. But where Biden sounded less certain, was on how the Russian president should pay for the alleged crime. For instance, the US has sought to cut off Russia's export of oil and gas, a trade that is at the heart of the Russian economy. Putin has placed the Russian economy on a war footing, with 6% of GDP spent on arms and ammunition production, meaning that US attempts to seriously constrict Russian weapons production have failed. And there remain options open to the US and other countries in the West if they choose to punish Russia even further.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Donald Trump, who drew criticism as U.S. president for his praise of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, made his first public comment on the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on Monday in a cryptic social media post that cast no blame. "Putin is responsible for Navalny's death," Biden said. Former presidents and top members of Congress from both parties had also denounced Putin over the death of Navalny, Russia's most prominent opposition leader since it was reported on Friday. But Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican nomination to challenge Biden in the November election, had remained silent until Monday. Kremlin political critics, turncoat spies and investigative journalists have been killed or assaulted in a variety of way s. The Russian opposition has lost its brightest star with Navalny's sudden death in a prison colony. “This is a very difficult loss for the Russian opposition,” he told The Associated Press after his death. While Navalny was the first leader to build a national Russian opposition, there were other opposition factions who didn’t like him or his organization. While Navalny’s team continued to publish successful investigative reports, they ultimately suspended the protests and said they would switch to different tactics. OPPOSITION IN EXILEIn the meantime, the Russian opposition faces a future largely in exile without one of its brightest leaders.

Anti-Kremlin activist Bill Browder said he believes Alexei Navalny's death was intended as a message to political opponents of Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of elections next month. Dissident Navalny, who died Friday, had been serving a 19-year prison sentence on charges of extremism in Russia, which he vehemently denied. World leaders reacted with dismay and suspicion to the death, with U.S. President Joe Biden saying "Putin is responsible." Russia's Foreign Ministry on Friday said the West's reaction to Navalny's death was "self-exposing," given that no forensic medical examination had been made available at the time. Browder, the CEO and co-founder of Hermitage Capital Management and a friend of Navalny, also accused the Russian leader of being behind the death.
