Sen. JD Vance on Saturday defended former president Donald Trump's comments calling Democratic leaders "the enemy from within," saying that inflation, slowing military recruitment and the migrant crisis are a "way bigger threat than any foreign threat." These problems, the Ohio Republican told NBC News' "Meet the Press," are "caused by broken leadership." Specifically, Vance mentioned former Speaker Nancy Pelosi as a catalyst for American decline. "Under Nancy Pelosi’s long life in public leadership, the United States has gone from the preeminent industrial power of the world to second, next to China," Vance told moderator Kristen Welker. We can handle foreign conflicts.”Vance's comments follow weeks of Trump asserting that Democrats, as the "enemy from within," are more dangerous to the U.S.' future than foreign adversaries.

"It's going to be a free-for-all" if Republicans lose the House and Trump loses the White House, a third House GOP lawmaker added. 2 GOP leader, Scalise also has not spoken publicly about what he’d run for in the minority. CNN —Fascism is a dirty word in US politics, so when former President Donald Trump’s former chief of staff, retired Marine Gen. John Kelly, says Trump fits the definition of “fascist,” it’s news. It’s so easy,” Trump said when asked by conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt whether he would “pardon yourself” or “fire Jack Smith.”“I would fire him within two seconds,” Trump said. But Trump has suggested on multiple occasions he would weaponize the justice system against his political rivals if reelected. Trump, who frequently rails against Smith on the campaign trail, told Breitbart last July that he “wouldn’t keep” the special counsel if he were reelected. “I wouldn’t keep him,” Trump said when asked if he would fire Smith. CNN —Donald Trump called Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi each “an enemy from within,” even as the former president’s Republican allies attempt to argue that his previous comments labeling political opponents as such are being misinterpreted. But when you look at ‘Shifty Schiff’ and some of the others, yeah, they are, to me, the enemy from within,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News’ “MediaBuzz” that aired Sunday. Fox News’ Howard Kurtz gave Trump an opportunity to clarify — “He’s a political opponent of yours, but is he an enemy?” — to which Trump responded, “Of course he’s an enemy, he’s an enemy.”Trump also called Pelosi an “enemy from within,” falsely claiming the then-speaker of the House had the opportunity to protect the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. “I did not hear President Trump in that clip say he’s going to sic the military on Adam Schiff. His alarming behavior may look to some like a candidacy melting down when the pressure is at its most extreme. With polls deadlocked, Trump’s behavior hasn’t yet disqualified him. And Trump’s voters still regard him as a vessel for their frustration with a political and economic system they believe has poorly served them. Trump’s behavior underscores stakes of deadlocked electionIt will be up to voters to decide how to process Trump’s recent conduct. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The way Leader Hakeem Jeffries sees it, House Democrats haven’t held the majority this Congress — but they’ve governed as if they did. Jeffries is hoping to win back the House majority with twin messages of “people over politics” and a promise to curb the chaos of the House GOP. And while he said that House Democrats will strive to work with “traditional Republican colleagues on any issue, whenever and wherever possible,” he sees Trump as different. What Democrats would doAs speaker, Jeffries would be responsible for setting the House’s agenda for the first time in his career. Including Detroit, Trump this year has pointedly attacked the most populous cities in three battleground states crucial to winning the White House: Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Trump’s attacks risk offending swing voters who don’t share his dark view of their big cities, as well as Black voters his campaign is trying to sway in what’s expected to be a close election won on the margins. Thank you, sir, for saying it.’ They want help.”“These cities,” Trump added, “it’s like living in hell.”It’s not only large cities that Trump likes to vilify. A Republican close to Trump’s campaign argued that his attacks on cities aren’t insults but are, rather, a pledge to solve problems that most people who live in those regions recognize. Washington CNN —Sen. JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, falsely claimed Sunday that former President Donald Trump “didn’t go after his political opponents” during his presidency – an assertion that is contradicted by a mountain of evidence. As president, Trump publicly and privately pressured the Justice Department, and others in his administration, to investigate or prosecute numerous political opponents. Trump made extensive behind-the-scenes efforts to get his political opponents charged with crimes. But you don’t have to rely on investigative reporting or the memoirs of former administration officials to know that Trump went after political opponents as president. As CNN reporter Marshall Cohen has noted, there is a long list of political opponents whom Trump publicly called for the Justice Department and others to investigate or prosecute.

In total, Larsen has given around $1.9 million to support Harris' campaign directly and through PACs, according to FEC data compiled by crypto market and blockchain analyst James Delmore and independently verified by CNBC. Nearly half of all the corporate money flowing into the election has come from the crypto industry, according to a recent report from the nonprofit watchdog group Public Citizen. "What we've had to date has been almost like purposeful chaos by Gensler to kind of crush the domestic industry," Larsen said. Horowitz said that he and his wife, Felicia, "have known Vice President Harris for over 10 years and she has been a great friend to both of us during that time." On Monday, the Harris campaign unveiled its "Opportunity Agenda for Black Men" in a report.

The Chinese military's Eastern Theatre Command said the "Joint Sword-2024B" drills were taking place in the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, south and east of Taiwan. In 2022, shortly after then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, China fired missiles over the island. Taiwan's China policy making Mainland Affairs Council said that China's latest war games and refusal to renounce the use of force were "blatant provocations" that seriously undermined regional peace and stability. Joseph Wu, the secretary-general of Taiwan's National Security Council, said Taiwan would "stay alert" but would remain "moderate and responsible, maintain status quo across the Taiwan Strait."

China’s military exercises around Taiwan, a democracy of 23 million people, have become increasingly frequent in recent years and have tended to coincide with events that have angered Beijing. In August 2022, China launched a week of military drills following a visit to the island by then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Ahead of the drills, the Eastern Theater Command released a propaganda video entitled “prepared for battle” on its social media accounts. The PLA did not say whether the drills involved live fire exercises, and, as of now, China has not launched any missiles. A total of seven Chinese warships plus additional Coast Guard vessels were detected near the Taiwan Strait, according to the ministry.

You may have noticed how desperate some politicians' fundraising appeals can sound. AdvertisementIf you're a person who's at all involved in politics, from the most seasoned operative to the casual observer, you're undoubtedly familiar — and perhaps a bit annoyed — with the desperate fundraising appeals uttered in the voice of politicians. AdvertisementWe weren’t quite able to reach our most recent re-election campaign fundraising goal. If the candidate is inspiring to voters on their own, there's less need to scare people into sending them money. "There's an assumption that the more desperate the appeals become the better the fundraising works," Pennington said.

The lines crossed in the Paul Pelosi attack: 49% blamed political rhetoric, 40% said it was an isolated incident by a disturbed person, and 2% said both were a factor. And a greater share of respondents than ever said rhetoric was a contributor to the latest attempt on Trump’s life. The previous time the NBC News poll asked this question, Republican respondents called the Paul Pelosi attack an isolated incident by a 64%-25% margin. Independents narrowly said rhetoric was an important contributor, 48%-41%, while Democrats blamed rhetoric 74%-17%. This month, Republicans overwhelmingly said rhetoric was an important contributor to the assassination attempt against Trump, while Democrats shaded more narrowly in the other direction.

California governor vetoes contentious AI safety bill
  + stars: | 2024-09-29 | by ( Story Reuters | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Reuters —California Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday vetoed a hotly contested artificial intelligence safety bill, after the tech industry raised objections, saying it could drive AI companies from the state and hinder innovation. The AI industry is growing fast in California and some leaders questioned the future of these companies in the state if the bill became law. Developers of AI software operating in the state would have also needed to outline methods for turning off the AI models, effectively a kill switch. Alphabet’s Google, Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Meta Platforms, all of which are developing generative AI models, had expressed their concerns about the proposal. Newsom separately signed legislation requiring the state to assess potential threats posed by Generative AI to California’s critical infrastructure.
