Drone stocks rallied Monday as retail interest ramped up in the sector following a Palantir partnership with Red Cat Holdings and amid a flurry of mysterious New Jersey sightings that Wall Street believes could boost funding for the industry. Red Cat shares rallied more than 25% on news that its working with Palantir to integrate visual navigation software into its drones. The partnership news comes as recent sightings across the northeast have reignited interest in the sector, while also fueling national security concerns. FBI officials on Thursday said there was "no evidence" that the drones jeopardize "national security and public safety." Many on Wall Street view the incoming White House administration as a potential boon that could boost funding for the sector and U.S.-made drones.

Trump's decision to invite China's Xi Jinping to his inauguration surprised many observers. When President-elect Donald Trump invited China's President Xi Jinping, the leader of the US' biggest geopolitical rival, to his January inauguration on Thursday, it came as somewhat of a surprise. But Trump has long reveled in unpredictability, and has often balanced his confrontational China policies with years of lavishing praise for Xi. AdvertisementSome see Trump's invitation as the latest power play designed to imbalance Xi and reset US-China relations. All of this makes it highly unlikely that Xi will want to come to the US to clap as Trump is sworn in as president.

"It would be silly for me to say that we didn't see generative AI as a potential threat," Orgeron said. He recalled attending CES in 2023 and said that many creative professionals there were unaware of generative AI and the impact it could have on the industry. However, the move toward generative AI was preceded by earlier acquisitions. Paul Hennessy, the CEO of Shutterstock, said in June the company earned $104 million in annual revenue from AI licensing agreements in 2023. While it doesn't offer an AI video-generation service yet, Orgeron said Shutterstock plans to launch a service soon.
