Below, two gold experts share four ways investors can add gold to their portfolios. AdvertisementIn general, physical gold is a less liquid way to own the asset and is quite costly. Synthetic gold ETFs don't hold physical gold, investing instead in gold derivatives such as futures and options. In Milling-Stanley's opinion, investing in mining stocks instead of directly investing in gold erodes some of the metal's portfolio protection, as mining stocks behave more in line with the general equity market. Royalties limit the holder's exposure to the risks associated with directly investing in mines, such as exploration, development, and regulatory compliance.

Investors have been increasingly on edge about the prospect of former President Donald Trump winning the election, a possibility for which Wall Street has been preparing to a greater extent. While polls remain effectively dead-even, Trump’s prospects have grown since the start of this month in political betting markets. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite led the decline, ending the day down by 1.6%; while the S&P 500 and Dow both fell about 1%. Recent strong economic data has led traders to question whether the central bank might maintain higher rates for longer than anticipated. The current market environment suggests continued volatility ahead, said Torres, warning of the potential for further yield curve steepening and increased market turbulence ahead.

The Chinese stock market soared after news of a stimulus package but plunged again on Wednesday. Risk remains high in Chinese stocks, which is why investors should exercise caution. The recent volatility in the Chinese market doesn't come as a surprise to Zehrid Osmani, portfolio manager at $21 billion Martin Currie. Valuations are low coming out of the pandemic, creating an attractive entry point into the market, Osmani said. He points to some structural challenges the Chinese economy faces, such as an aging population and a slump in the property sector.

It could be a bad idea to keep a stock solely to skip out on realizing capital gains. The right advice can buy time, reduce tax burdens, or even avoid them altogether without breaking any laws. "So, a tax-loss-harvesting type of trading will take place and then you are reducing your capital gains taxes." This grants them a tax deduction while skipping out on capital gains tax. With all eyes on China right now, one fund manager is bullish on the country regardless of any "bazooka" stimulus measures, saying investors should be getting involved. Starting on Sept. 24, China announced a string of stimulus measures aimed at boosting China's economy . Stephen Roach, for example, former chief economist at Morgan Stanley, warned investors against being too swept up in the China market rally . 'Starting point' For those looking to invest in China, Glass said a good "starting point" was Midea Group , which makes appliances and industrial robots. Analysts' average price target is 4.49 Hong Kong dollars, which gives the stock almost 30% potential downside from its current price around 6.40 Hong Kong dollars.

Pittsburgh CNN —In the years that Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dave McCormick led one of the world’s largest hedge funds, the firm bet millions of dollars against some of the state’s biggest and most iconic companies, financial filings show. For financial institutions, short positions can be lucrative. The fund shorted about four dozen companies from Pennsylvania during McCormick’s tenure, the records show. The fund did invest in stocks of some of the same Pennsylvania companies it shorted in other years, and overall, it reported spending more money buying stocks of Pennsylvania companies than shorting them in four of the five annual reports reviewed by CNN. She argued that the short positions Bridgewater took in Pennsylvania companies didn’t negatively impact employees because they represented a small fraction of each company’s overall value.

If you are willing to stomach significant short-term volatility for the chance at higher returns in the long run, you're generally considered an "aggressive" investor. Generally, aggressive investors hold larger portions of riskier assets, such as stocks, while conservatives prefer the safety and predictability of bonds. You'd think, then, that cryptocurrency, an extremely volatile asset, would be the exclusive territory of aggressive investors. So are young, wealthy investors changing the definitions of what it means to be aggressive or conservative? "We don't have an aggressive, momentum-style market in digital assets that typically attracts aggressive investors."

Elon Musk has a big task this week: convincing investors that Tesla is more than just a car company. It may do so once again as Elon Musk prepares to use the studio lot to tell another story: that Tesla is more than just a car company. The long-awaited event — originally scheduled for August — is meant to give weight to the electric vehicle maker's pitch that it is a tech company first and a car company second. Over the 12-month period ending June, about 2 of 3 active bond managers trounced their average passive counterpart, according to a recent analysis from Morningstar . There were a few tailwinds in active managers' favor. With the Fed recently cutting rates by a half point — and Chair Jerome Powell noting that two more quarter-point cuts could be in the cards this year — a new challenge awaits these active bond funds. As interest rates fall, active managers can position accordingly, said Roger Hallam, global head of rates at Vanguard. "We expect active managers to make a little more, and they should be because they're doing more trades and it costs more to manage active portfolios," said Olmsted.
