BuzzFeed Clashes With Vivek Ramaswamy
  + stars: | 2024-05-28 | by ( Benjamin Mullin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
BuzzFeed’s newest activist investor, the former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, wants the company to consider moves like hiring the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson and the N.B.A. Jonah Peretti, BuzzFeed’s founder and chief executive, has already rejected some of Mr. Ramaswamy’s requests out of hand, setting up a clash between the two men. Mr. Ramaswamy, an investor who has amassed an 8.3 percent stake in BuzzFeed, sent a letter to the company’s board of directors Monday criticizing its business practices and journalistic efforts. Though he has been steadily buying up stock for months, his intentions for the company didn’t become clear until this week. Before his brief run for president, Mr. Ramaswamy made a fortune in the pharmaceutical business, selling his company’s stake in promising firms to the Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo.

A few weeks ago, as I watched the Golden State Warriors submit to a humiliating defeat by the Sacramento Kings, my main feeling was not frustration, anger or embarrassment. The Warriors’ three core players — Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green — have been together since 2012. Curry blossomed into one of the greatest players of all time; Green, one of the best defenders; Thompson, one of the best shooters. Rooting for basketball players means constantly being aware that they are aging. And now that the oldest players are my age, it means constantly being aware that I am aging, too.

Bill Walton, a basketball center whose extraordinary passing and rebounding skills helped him win two national college championships with U.C.L.A. A redheaded hippie and devoted Grateful Dead fan, Walton was a 6-foot-11 acolyte of the renowned U.C.L.A. He was named the national college player of the year three times. Walton’s greatest game was the 1973 national championship against Memphis State, played in St. Louis. Walton — not yet known for his often hyperbolic, stream-of-consciousness speaking manner — refused to say much after the game.

Royce White, a Black former pro basketball player who led protests in Minneapolis after the murder of George Floyd, made his first appearance on “The Alex Jones Show” about two years ago. Opinion | Pay Caitlin Clark What She’s Worth
  + stars: | 2024-05-23 | by ( Joshua Mendelsohn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
In 1969, the National Basketball Association was a relatively young professional basketball league fighting to establish itself. But the league was facing economic problems, and it was unclear how successful it would be monetizing the game’s appeal to young people. Desperate for credibility (and fighting off a rival league also seeking to establish itself), the N.B.A. Today, the Women’s National Basketball Association, established about 50 years after the N.B.A., finds itself at a similar crossroads. has decided that Clark will be paid a salary of $76,535 in her first year.

And the start of the 2024 W.N.B.A. season has many wondering if the sport is entering a new economic era. The arrival of stars like Caitlin Clark, the former University of Iowa phenom who is now a rookie with the Indiana Fever, has boosted interest and ticket sales. But there are still obstacles the league needs to overcome before attaining the kind of stature that other professional sports leagues have. The league has long had stars, but it has struggled to market their skills and personalities to a mass audience.

Brittney Griner, in Her Own Words

COMING HOME, by Brittney Griner with Michelle BurfordIf you weren’t following women’s basketball, you probably hadn’t heard of Brittney Griner when she was arrested at a Moscow-area airport in February 2022. “Fear is one thing,” Griner writes in “Coming Home,” her new memoir, describing the stomach-curdling moment when an inspector seized her passport and told her to wait. “But uncertainty, the unknown, a free fall into mystery — that’s much stronger than fear; it’s terror.”At first, Griner naïvely thought she would be fined and sentenced to house arrest. But possession of even a small amount of drugs is a serious offense in Russia, and she was eventually charged with narcotics smuggling. Days later, when Russia invaded Ukraine, Griner found herself a high-profile pawn in a vicious geopolitical battle.

Was the Stone Age Actually the Wood Age?
  + stars: | 2024-05-04 | by ( Franz Lidz | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The basic chronology — Stone Age to Bronze Age to Iron Age — now underpins the archaeology of most of the Old World (and cartoons like “The Flintstones” and “The Croods”). Thomsen could well have substituted Wood Age for Stone Age, according to Thomas Terberger, an archaeologist and head of research at the Department of Cultural Heritage of Lower Saxony, in Germany. “We can probably assume that wooden tools have been around just as long as stone ones, that is, two and a half or three million years,“ he said. Of the thousands of archaeological sites that can be traced to the era, wood has been recovered from fewer than 10. The projectiles unearthed at the Schöningen site, known as Spear Horizon, are considered the oldest preserved hunting weapons.

star Brittney Griner was starting her nine-year sentence in a penal colony in Russia, sewing uniforms for the Russian military and subsisting on spoiled food. Griner was arrested at the Moscow Airport in February 2022, when officials found two vape cartridges in her backpack with 0.7 grams of cannabis oil. (To treat Griner’s chronic pain, a physician in Arizona had prescribed medical marijuana, but it was against the law in Russia.) She was charged with illegal drug possession and smuggling “a significant amount” of narcotics into the country and was sent to prison. Here are the highlights from my profile of the basketball star after I met her at a practice facility in Phoenix.

Bill Bradley, the basketball Hall of Famer and former United States senator known as a staunch opponent of legalized sports betting, was speaking about the topic back in January. But he might as well have been predicting the future. “Well there hasn’t been a scandal, yet,” he said, discussing how professional sports has become ever more entwined with the gambling industry in recent years. The league said Mr. Porter wagered money on his own team to lose, pretended to be hurt for betting purposes and shared confidential information with gamblers. competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport,” Adam Silver, the league’s commissioner, said in announcing Porter’s punishment.

One Potential Key to Knicks’ Season: Friendship

Researchers who study social networks in workplaces have found that having friends at work can make employees more productive and successful, not to mention happier. Friends can hold one another accountable in ways that acquaintances can’t, and a friend can help a new employee understand the workplace more quickly. So it was when Donte DiVincenzo signed with the N.B.A.’s New York Knicks in July. “It’s almost like you skip that introduction phase.”The Knicks have exceeded expectations this season. Some basketball pundits think this could be the year they reach the conference finals for the first time since 2000, when Brunson’s father, Rick, was a Knicks bench player.

President Biden jumped into a debate about gender and sports this week, calling for pay equity for women athletes after Caitlin Clark, the University of Iowa basketball standout, was selected first in the W.N.B.A. Ms. Clark’s salary will be far less than that of her male counterparts. Mr. Biden, writing on X on Tuesday, said that for all their accomplishments in sports, women athletes were undervalued. “Right now we’re seeing that even if you’re the best, women are not paid their fair share,” he said. “It’s time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons and ensure women are paid what they deserve.”Mr. Biden was nodding to a banner moment for women’s basketball, one powered by stars like Ms. Clark, who was chosen by the W.N.B.A.’s Indiana Fever, and Paige Bueckers of the University of Connecticut and Angel Reese of L.S.U.

So it makes sense that James Goldstein’s house, hovering over a canyon atop Beverly Hills, Calif., is one of the most strange, fascinating and perplexing architectural projects in the world. The worst pandemic in a century had begun. Today, on the unofficial fourth anniversary, I’ll update you on where things stand. The true tollCovid’s confirmed death toll — more than seven million people worldwide — is horrific on its own, and the true toll is much worse. The Economist magazine keeps a running estimate of excess deaths, defined as the number of deaths above what was expected from pre-Covid trends.

“The perspective, the lens, the representation, the experience of a Black woman from California is badly needed.”That’s what Representative Barbara Lee — a California Democrat vying for the Senate seat held for three decades by Dianne Feinstein — told a television reporter last month about why people should vote for her in the race. On Sunday, before a rally that evening outside a production studio in Los Angeles owned by the former N.B.A. all-star Baron Davis, I asked Lee what she meant by that, since Black people are only about 7 percent of the population of the state. She replied in a way that was both shrewd and true to her career in politics: “I’ve taken everything I know about what it means to be Black in America or brown in America or low-income in America or a woman in America and tried to turn it into policies.”
