In today’s edition, we dive into how Mike Johnson managed to survive a tight re-election bid for House speaker on the first day of the 119th Congress and the challenges that await him. Plus, "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker" sits down with the new majority leader in the Senate, John Thune. A trio of conservative rebels initially voted to block Johnson from being re-elected speaker, defying President-elect Donald Trump, who backed the Louisiana Republican, and threatening to paralyze the House. But that’s when Trump began getting involved, making multiple phone calls personally urging the holdouts to rally behind Johnson to enact his agenda. WASHINGTON — The new Congress will begin Friday, ushering in a tiny House Republican majority to tackle enormous tasks in the first year of Donald Trump’s second term, from keeping the government open to averting a calamitous debt default to advancing the president-elect’s immigration and tax ambitions. If both leave before Gaetz is replaced, that would cut the majority to an even more tenuous 217-215, meaning a single Republican defection could tank a bill unless Democrats vote in favor. In other words, House Republicans will have a zero-vote margin for defection in the crucial early months of Trump’s presidency. If history is any guide, House Republicans are unlikely to find enough votes to pass a bill without Democrats, as they always lose some votes on the right. But the chair of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., is warning Republicans that delaying the tax bill could jeopardize it and risk a multitrillion-dollar tax hike.

With less than a month to go before Robert Menendez, New Jersey’s disgraced former U.S. senator, is scheduled to be sentenced for corruption, his lawyers submitted an emotion-laden appeal for leniency based on what they depicted as Mr. Menendez’s hardscrabble upbringing, life of service and devotion to family. In a legal brief filed minutes before midnight on Thursday, the lawyers, Avi Weitzman and Adam Fee, laid out Mr. Menendez’s rise to political prominence in Hudson County, N.J., and a catalog of good deeds done for constituents during three decades in Congress. As they did during Mr. Menendez’s two-month bribery trial in Manhattan, Mr. Weitzman and Mr. Fee suggested that their client’s greatest failing was being led astray by a conniving wife. Nadine Menendez, the former senator’s wife, was charged with her husband with conspiring to trade his political influence for bribes of cash, gold bars and a Mercedes-Benz convertible. Her trial is expected to start next month.

Four days after her Dec. 18 wedding to Richard John Toon, Laurie Stone wrote a Substack post telling her readers how she took one look at Mr. Toon 18 years ago and fell for him. “An electron bounced between us,” she wrote on “Everything is Personal,” her newsletter. That didn’t prevent her from feeling ambivalent as they stood before the judge in Hudson, N.Y., last month. “The history of the institution has not been a good thing for women.”Ms. Stone, 78, is a feminist and writer. For 25 years, until 1999, she wrote weekly columns about theater, books and standup comedy from a feminist perspective for The Village Voice.

A son of Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., was sentenced to 28 years in prison Monday in connection with the death of a sheriff's deputy during a law enforcement chase last year. State District Judge Bobbi Weiler, who handed down the sentence, said in court Monday that Cramer was unlikely to serve the full 28 years, according to The Associated Press. “These are not mandatory minimums, which means that you’re probably going to serve a small portion of that 28 years and be out on parole,” Weiler said. The Mercer County state’s attorney and a public defender listed for Cramer and did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday night. The North Dakota Highway Patrol has said that Martin was killed after Cramer veered and crashed into an unoccupied Mercer County sheriff’s patrol vehicle that struck him as he was preparing to assemble a tire deflation device to end the chase.

Editor’s Note: A version of this story published last year after President Carter entered hospice care. But there was another source of inspiration for Carter that’s been overlooked: his distinctive brand of White evangelical Christianity, which remains hidden from most Americans. Carter was a progressive White evangelical Christian. Progressive White evangelicalism was once what one historian called “the ascendent strain of evangelicalism in America.”Today White evangelical Christians are associated, rightly or wrongly, with a conservative set of theological and political stances. Madeline Drexler/APUnlike former President Bill Clinton, another progressive White evangelical, Carter refused to “triangulate,” or adjust his beliefs to win favor with evangelicals.

As the nation mourns the loss of Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday at age 100, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders look back on the historic contribution the then-president made to the community. Following a push from several Asian American lawmakers, Carter, the country’s 39th president, signed a proclamation that designated May 4, 1979, as the start of Asian Pacific American Heritage Week. Decades later, the week would be extended, becoming the heritage month now celebrated annually. Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga, both Democrats of Hawaii and fellow Asian Americans, followed suit, introducing sister legislation in the Senate. Mielke underscored that the national recognition from Carter wouldn’t have been possible without decades of work from Asian American and Pacific Islander advocates and legislators themselves, who had long championed the racial group.

President-elect Donald Trump backed House Speaker Mike Johnson in his campaign to hold onto the gavel, writing on his social media platform that the Louisiana Republican has his “Complete & Total Endorsement.”“Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man. The speaker election is Friday when the new Congress begins. Since then, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., stepped down from his seat to pursue a Cabinet nomination, from which he later withdrew, bringing the number of House Republicans to 219. But Trump appeared to waver on his support for Johnson shortly after the president-elect denounced the bipartisan government funding deal the speaker released earlier this month. Trump's statement Monday may tamp down rumblings inside the House that Republicans should search for an alternative to Johnson.

Investigators said they haven’t yet figured out what caused the apparent leak of carbon monoxide from the propane gas heating system. New Hampshire Fire Marshal Sean Toomey said there were no carbon monoxide alarms found in the home, and he urged people to install and maintain such alarms. “This has been a terribly tragic year for both fire deaths and carbon monoxide deaths,” Toomey said. The CDC said more than 400 Americans die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning not linked to fires, while another 14,000 are hospitalized. When fire crews arrived, they found the home had elevated levels of carbon monoxide, Toomey said, adding that the deaths were believed to be accidental.
