New York CNN —Dynastic hot dog eating champion Joey Chestnut will not compete in this year’s Nathan’s hot dog eating contest after he struck a deal with plant-based food company Impossible Foods. “We are devastated to learn that Joey Chestnut has chosen to represent a rival brand that sells plant-based hot dogs rather than competing in the 2024 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest,” the Major League Eating organization, which oversees the event, said in a statement. The organization said that to come back Chestnut must renounce deals with brands that rival Nathan’s. Last year, Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that she eats an anti-inflammatory diet after suffering from long COVID. Eating an anti-inflammatory diet — meaning mostly fresh or minimally processed foods and minimal highly processed foods — can help reduce inflammation, according to the Cleveland Clinic. "Mushrooms contain multiple natural anti-inflammatory compounds, including essential vitamins and minerals, as well as numerous anti-inflammatory metabolites," Kodamala said. "Turmeric contains the active ingredient curcumin, which is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, making it a real powerhouse to include in your diet," she said. Nuts may also have anti-inflammatory properties, according to a 2023 review, and so might ginger, according to a 2022 review — but more research is needed on both.

On Ikaria, it's considered one of the island's secret ingredients for longevity, and many Ikarians start their day with a spoonful. When I'm in the States, I shop for Greek honey either in local Greek and Middle Eastern food stores or online. I stir it into herbal, green and black teas and use it a lot in smoothies with Greek yogurt. Former Red Lobster employees say that while the pandemic, inflation and rent costs impacted Red Lobster, Thai Union’s ineptitude was the pivotal factor in Red Lobster’s decline. Kenny criticized Red Lobster employees at meetings and made derogatory comments about them, according to former Red Lobster leaders who worked closely with Kenny. Red Lobster’s annual customer count has dropped by 30% since 2019, Red Lobster said in its bankruptcy filing. Red Lobster employees say they were pressured by Thai Union representatives to buy more seafood from Thai Union. Thai Union representatives also began sitting in on meetings between Red Lobster and seafood suppliers, said one of the former Red Lobster employees who witnessed these conversations.

Stone Age Paleo diet was not rich in meat, scientists say
  + stars: | 2024-04-30 | by ( Katie Hunt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
CNN —What did people in the Stone Age eat before the advent of farming around 10,000 years ago? Scientists analyzed chemical signatures preserved in bones and teeth belonging to at least seven different Iberomaurusians and found that plants, not meat, were their primary source of dietary protein. The evidence suggested that the Iberomaurusians consumed “fermentable starchy plants” such as wild cereals or acorns, according to the study. The work undermines the idea that a Stone Age diet was meat heavy — a rigid assumption perpetuated by present-day dietary trends like the Paleo diet. The transition to agriculture was a complex process that occurred at different times and proceeded at different rates, in different ways with different foods, in different places, Pobiner said.

But when I discovered a London-based project turning discarded chicken feathers into edible proteins, I admit I was skeptical. The company behind the project, Kera Protein Ltd., has a unique approach to its lab-produced protein product. Since then, he and his business partner, Tom Washington, have delved into the issue of waste management - focusing particularly on chicken feathers. To make the food we tried, Kera extracted feathers from discarded chicken carcasses in partnership with a local farm. “We hope to revolutionize the way people view chicken feathers, demonstrating their potential as a valuable resource rather than just a dirty by-product.”

How to Use Up Those Easter Eggs
  + stars: | 2024-03-31 | by ( Sam Sifton | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I had a lovely run of Brooklyn sandwiches going, before work, school and Easter intervened to send me back to the kitchen. A colossal roast beef, fried eggplant and mozzarella hero from Defonte’s in Red Hook, with hot peppers, gravy and mayonnaise. (A few years ago, I ginned up a recipe for the roast beef hero from Defonte’s.) But today is Easter, and not really a day for sandwiches — unless they’re ham ones on little potato rolls, with strong mustard, to eat in a side yard in the chill while children run around looking for hidden eggs. I want to make deviled eggs (above) to celebrate the holiday puckishly, or maybe a big egg salad to serve in lettuce cups.

Your Grilled Cheese Needs Toum

I’m embracing nostalgia today, luxuriating in memories of a Brooklyn I never experienced, even though I’m borough-raised. And for dinner beforehand, maybe Chinese roast pork on garlic bread? For Ham El-Waylly, nostalgia is a grilled cheese sandwich slathered with toum (above), a sauce made by combining garlic, lemon juice, salt and oil. The mixture is one that recalls the akkawi cheese manakeesh sandwiches he used to consume as a teenager in Doha, Qatar. The toum packs a wallop, as if you’d stuffed garlic bread with Muenster.
