Washington CNN —Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey backtracked Saturday on his earlier endorsement of Elon Musk as the right choice to lead the company, speaking out against the billionaire who, for the past six months, has led Twitter through a series of largely self-inflicted crises. Under Musk, Twitter has slashed most of its staff, suffered frequent service disruptions and made a number of controversial changes to its policies and features, including a recent decision to remove blue checks from VIP users who don’t pay to be verified. Dorsey’s reflections, outlined in Bluesky posts reviewed by CNN, highlight the Twitter founder’s growing disillusionment with Musk. They also come after numerous exchanges in recent months where Dorsey has publicly questioned some of Musk’s decision-making. Confronted by criticism from other Bluesky users that Twitter could have gone in a different direction, Dorsey argued that there was nothing stopping someone else from outbidding Musk.
London CNN —Elon Musk’s decision to suddenly ban prominent tech journalists from Twitter is fanning a fierce backlash in Europe. Germany warned of the impact on press freedom, while a senior EU official said Twitter must comply with the bloc’s rules or face possible sanctions. “The EU’s Digital Services Act requires respect of media freedom and fundamental rights. European leaders previously said they were watching how Musk’s takeover of Twitter would affect the platform. Thierry Breton, a top EU official, warned Musk in late November that the social media platform must take significant steps to comply with the bloc’s content moderation laws.
A fabricated screenshot purporting to show a tweet published by The Guardian on Twitter CEO Elon Musk has circulated online. The fake screenshot appears to show a tweet published by the British outlet on Dec. 12 supposedly reporting that an audio had been leaked featuring Musk “ranting” about “transgender ideology.”Examples of the fabricated image can be viewed (here) and (here). Web archived versions of The Guardian’s homepage saved on Dec. 12 did not find a similar report either (here), (here). Reuters found no tweets mentioning the alleged Musk story replying to The Guardian’s account on Dec. 12 (archive.vn/wip/k44xC), (archive.vn/wip/4Wpy2). Reuters did not find any news sources reporting on the supposed audio mentioned in the screenshot of the fabricated tweet via Google advanced search (archive.vn/wip/fywq0).
Two current Twitter employees told CNN on Thursday that they plan to reject the ultimatum, citing a toxic work environment they say the billionaire has introduced. Musk told employees his goal is to build “Twitter 2.0” and that employees who choose to stay will be required to commit to working “long hours at high intensity” and presumably agreeing to Musk’s demand for Twitter employees, who have been largely working remotely, to return to in-office work. Another Twitter employee, who asked not to be quoted, shared similar concerns and said they planned to also exit the company. “People can’t overlook the public mockery and firing of other employees,” the former employee told CNN. Employees working in the United States from other countries could also risk losing their work visas if they leave the company.
In less than a week since Musk acquired Twitter, the company’s C-suite appears to have almost entirely cleared out, through a mix of firings and resignations. Musk has also dissolved Twitter’s former board of directors. At the same time, Musk is also running several other companies, including as CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. Musk immediately fired four of Twitter’s top executives — CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, General Counsel Sean Edgett and Policy Head Vijaya Gadde. It’s unclear whether VP of Operations Lindsey Iannucci, the other two members of Twitter’s top leadership team, will remain with the company.
WASHINGTON — Which party controls Congress next year could have big implications for Twitter — and its new “Chief Twit,” Elon Musk. A Jordan spokesman had no comment about Musk and Twitter, but Republicans expect the company will be more cooperative with any future GOP investigations with Musk at the helm. But upon taking control of Twitter, Musk said he would first form a “content moderation council,” and Yoel Roth, head of Safety and Integrity at Twitter, insisted that the company’s policies on hate speech have not changed. “If Elon Musk has said now that he’s going to start a content moderation board, that was one good sign, but I continue to be concerned about that,” Klobuchar said. Other Democrats are raising national security concerns about how Musk financed the $44 billion Twitter deal.
