MADRID, July 11 (Reuters) - Spanish opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo, leader of the conservative People's Party (PP), won an ill-tempered televised debate on Monday night ahead of an election later this month, a poll published by El Mundo newspaper indicated on Tuesday. With Feijoo leading in polls before the July 23 election, the onus was on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, a Socialist, to go on the attack. About 54% of voters thought Feijoo won the debate compared to 46% for Sanchez, according to the Sigma Dos survey for El Mundo. It found that 22% of people who voted for the Socialists in the past election felt Feijoo had won the debate while only 6% of PP voters assigned the victory to Sanchez. The expectation is that the election at the height of the summer holiday season will also suffer from a lack of engagement.

MADRID, July 1 (Reuters) - Spain's conservative People's Party is set to win the most seats in the lower house of parliament in a national election next month, ahead of the ruling Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), a poll released by El Mundo newspaper showed on Saturday. The survey, carried out between June 26 and 30, showed the PP widening its lead over Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's PSOE, pollster Sigma Dos said. The poll estimated that the PP would get between 140 and 143 seats in the 350-member lower house, up from 140 in the previous poll held between June 16 and 23. The PSOE would get between 102 and 105 seats, it showed, compared with 102 in the previous survey. The far-right Vox party, the PP's likeliest post-election ally, would get 34-36 seats, compared with 35 seats previously.

CNN —Inter Miami chief soccer officer and sporting director Chris Henderson said that “terms are agreed” between the club and Argentinian forward Lionel Messi. “With regard to Leo, terms are agreed, but we are working on the paperwork with Major League Soccer,” Henderson, who was at an introductory press conference for new manager Tata Martino, told reporters. Both worked together with the Argentina national team, reaching the final of the 2015 Copa América in Chile and the 2016 United States Centennial Cup. Last week, the Miami Herald reported that Messi, a World Cup winner with Argentina last year, is expected to make his Inter Miami debut on July 21. His influence on soccer in the United States is already being felt with ticket prices for Inter Miami matches soaring by more than 1,000% in the minutes after the move to MLS was first reported.

The survey, carried out between June 16 and 23, showed the PP would get 140 seats in the 350-member lower house, down from 141 a week earlier. The poll, commissioned by El Mundo newspaper, showed far-right party Vox, the PP's likeliest post-election ally, would get 35 seats, down from 36 a week earlier, Sigma-Dos said. A likely coalition between Vox and PP would be one seat short of the 176 outright majority. Sanchez on May 29 called a surprise snap election after his party and its junior coalition partner Podemos were routed in regional and municipal ballots. Following the May municipal and regional elections, local negotiations between PP and Vox resulted in bickering in some cases.

CNN —Argentine superstar Lionel Messi is reportedly expected to make his Inter Miami debut on July 21, club managing owner Jorge Mas told a small group of reporters Monday, according to the Miami Herald. Inter Miami faces Mexico’s Cruz Azul in a Leagues Cup opening match that day at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. CNN has reached out to Inter Miami and Messi’s representatives for comment. According to the Miami Herald, Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas said the club and seven-time world player of the year Messi have agreed to a deal but are still finalizing the agreement. “I made the decision that I am going to Miami,” he told Spanish outlets SPORT and Mundo Deportivo earlier this month.

Lionel Messi announced Wednesday he's decided to sign for Inter Miami. The league discussed giving Messi a share of the revenue from its Apple TV+ package, per The Athletic. Lionel Messi is already sending Inter Miami's profile into the stratosphere — and that's exactly why the MLS has put so much on the bargaining table. The club has nearly quintupled its Instagram followers since Messi announced his decision. Messi told Mundo Deportivo: "I still haven't closed it one hundred percent," but "I made the decision that I'm going to go to Miami."

Messi on Wednesday announced he will sign for Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, choosing the United States as his next destination over a Barcelona reunion or blockbuster deal to play in Saudi Arabia. Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time, has spurned a highly lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, choosing to instead ply his trade with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami. It always appeared unlikely, however, given the club's longstanding problem of getting to grips with La Liga's Financial Fair Play rules. "I made the decision that I'm going to go to Miami," Messi revealed in an interview with Spanish news outlets Mundo Deportivo and Sport, according to a translation. He added: "Obviously, with the same responsibility and desire to want to win and to always do things well.

Lionel Messi confirmed on Wednesday he would sign for Inter Miami in the MLS. Apple and the MLS signed a 10-year, $2.5 billion deal based on a new soccer streaming package. The day before Messi confirmed his decision to sign with Inter Miami, Apple announced it would air a four-part docuseries about the Argentinian superstar. Inter Miami has only been playing in the MLS since 2020, and was co-founded by David Beckham in 2018. Apple, Inter Miami, and the MLS did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Lionel Messi has pulled off his latest stunning feat: He is headed to Major League Soccer, and joining Inter Miami. It took months of negotiations with MLS, the Inter Miami ownership, Adidas and even Apple getting involved in a creative pitch to bring Messi to Miami's pitch. Inter Miami needed six years from inception to playing its first match, and its first four seasons have been less than stellar. Messi met with Inter Miami co-owner Beckham this spring, and that was shared publicly almost to ensure that everyone knew the sides were still talking. Two days after Argentina won the World Cup, Miami Heat guard Kyle Lowry sat on his team's bench for a game unable to play because of injury.

"I made the decision that I'm going to go to Miami," Messi said in an interview with Mundo Deportivo and Sport newspapers. Inter Miami are co-owned by former England captain David Beckham, who was one of the first major European stars to move to the United States to play in the MLS, winning the MLS Cup twice with Los Angeles Galaxy. PSG EXITOnce the crown jewel of European football, Messi has effectively been let go by two super clubs in two years -- for free. His move away from PSG, however, is of his own volition as he felt the French club lacked a project for the future while fan unrest only hastened his exit. The highs after winning Argentina's first World Cup in 36 years were quickly offset by the lows he experienced in Paris.

Nematodes are typically less than 1 millimeter in length, so Bik and her team use powerful microscopes to study them. This particular species — known as the Ceramonema — is commonly found on underwater mountains in the deep sea. Jim Baldwin and Manuel Mundo-OcampoWhat sets these nematodes apart are the complex wave-like patterned plates covering their entire body. "There are so few scientists working on these species and there's so much sand out there," Bik said. "If you grab a bit of sand outside your doorstep or at your local beach, you're probably holding hundreds of new species."
Feb 16 (Reuters) - Spanish prosecutors are investigating around 1.4 million euros ($1.50 million) in payments soccer giants Barcelona had made over three years to a company owned by a high-ranking official of Spain's refereeing body, the club said, confirming an earlier media report. Spanish radio Cadena SER said on Wednesday that the soccer club made the payments between 2016 and 2018 to a company of Jose Maria Enríquez Negreira, who was at the time vice-president of a refereeing committee of the Spanish football association. It said the consultant also provided, in video format, reports about youth players from other Spanish clubs. According to Spanish media reports, prosecutors launched the probe in 2022 after a tax office inspection of a company owned by Enriquez Negreira, found no record or services provided to Barcelona in return for 1.4 million euros in payments. Cadena SER quoted Enriquez Negreira as saying that his advice was verbal and included players' interactions with referees and that he denied ever favouring Barcelona in any refereeing decisions or disputes.

MADRID, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Opera star Placido Domingo faced new accusations of sexual harassment from a fellow Spanish singer in a television programme broadcast on Sunday, three years after such claims prompted an apology and curtailed his career. "One of the first things they tell you is don't go up in the lift alone with Placido Domingo," the woman told La Sexta television channel. He (Placido) told me in front of everyone: 'Listen, can I put my hand in one of these lovely pockets of yours.' U.S. institutions including the Metropolitan Opera in New York and San Francisco Opera also scrapped planned engagements. Domingo resigned as general director of the Los Angeles Opera, whose own enquiry found 10 allegations about him to be "credible."

In the final days of a bitterly fought Senate campaign, Nevada Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto wants voters to know that 14 members of her rival’s family have chosen to endorse her — not him. “Today we, the undersigned members of the Laxalt family, are writing in support of the re-election of Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto for the U.S. Senate. Cortez Masto’s campaign, in statewide television ads, accused Adam Laxalt of cashing in on his family name even though he was raised in the East Coast. In October, Laxalt responded to the letter from his 14 family members, tweeting: "It’s not surprising that once again a handful of family members and spouses, half of whom do not live in Nevada, and most of whom are Democrats, are supporting a Democrat,"It's the second time Laxalt family members have endorsed his opponent. Former President Barack Obama at a rally for Cortez Masto and other Nevada Democrats this week poked fun at the Laxalt family dynamic.
