Timeline of Racial Wealth Gap

Policies and practices that have disadvantaged Black Americans generation after generation help explain the racial wealth gap. Black veterans find it much harder to obtain benefits; one study finds Black claimants were twice as likely to have their applications queried. 1877Southern states begin enacting “Jim Crow” laws, which formalize racial segregation. The laws restrict civil liberties and limit job opportunities for Black people as employers relegate Black workers to lower-skilled roles. 1896The U.S. Supreme Court rules in Plessy v Ferguson that racial segregation is permissible.

Before the tourists came to marvel at the valley cradled in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, with its arid red slopes splashed with lush green and its deep-blue lake, the only living to be made was in olive farming, and not much of a living at that. Then came the modest little hiking lodge and the luxury resort, and the quasi-palace owned by Richard Branson and the inns set up by the people of the Ouirgane Valley, many of whom are members of the Amazigh ethnic group, more commonly known as Berbers. As more and more tourists discovered over the last few decades that the area was only an hour’s drive from the city of Marrakesh, the residents of villages like Ouirgane got jobs as guides for mule riding and hiking, drivers, waiters, hoteliers, restaurateurs and more. Many were able to move back home from Moroccan cities like Marrakesh and Essaouira, where they had taken jobs to support families in their villages.

This article contains spoilers for Episode 10 of the second season of “And Just Like That …”For most people, moments of rest are not the time for polished outfits, especially in the post-pandemic swirl of athleisure. And the bedroom itself, as a setting, is a valued place — a venue for vulnerable conversations, significant discussions or the odd laugh. Ahead of Episode 10, members of the Styles desk discussed the memorable loungewear, tote bags and kittens in the latest episode of the series. Vanessa Friedman There was a lot going on in this episode, but what I can’t get out of my mind were the pajamas (or, in some cases, the lack of them). That's down from 13% of Nike's women's team products which sold out during the same tournament in 2019, the data shows. For that reason, marketers must bear in mind the risk that the growing fanbase could see their support for women's soccer as disingenuous. To recognize the impact grassroots teams have in creating excitement about women's soccer, Adobe's ad also featured London-based community women's soccer clubs Peaches FC and Baesianz FC, said Sabina Strasser, Senior Director, Brand Experience EMEA at Adobe. Sporting goods retailer Fanatics has more than 475 U.S. women's team products for sale this year, up from about 175 in 2019, the company told Reuters. Kate Rosante’s passion for cocktails is thanks to her father, who built a bar in the living room of her childhood home. “I loved gathering around the guests and fetching drinks,” said Ms. Rosante, 43, a co-founder of the bourbon brand Boss Molly (slang for a stubborn female mule). “The bourbon world is hypermasculine and very niche,” she said. “We have respect for the tradition, but we didn’t feel it spoke to us. It’s no secret that nonalcoholic cocktails are suddenly ubiquitous. Whereas until a few years ago, nondrinkers had to make do with cranberry-splashed club soda, now seemingly every noteworthy bar offers a phony Negroni or a margarita-inspired mocktail. Today, the best bitter aperitifs (the term for nonalcoholic alternatives to spirits like Campari and Aperol) have all the complexity and layered flavors of their boozy counterparts. — Oliver StrandVideo Credit Credit... Then the war came, and according to the family history, Union soldiers plundered Sessions’ 27-room house. About 48 years old at the time, he did not stand a chance to succeed without slavery, the family history suggests. ‘A Better Nation’Some historians and genealogists say there is a valuable reason for white leaders – and other white Americans – to explore their links to slavery. Nicka Sewell-Smith, a professional genealogist with the family history website Ancestry.com, said people frequently ask her what to do with such documents. The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Meeks said in an interview that he has spent years trying to trace his family history back before 1870.

Italy welcomes baby to parliament for first time
  + stars: | 2023-06-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
ROME, June 7 (Reuters) - A baby took a seat in the Italian parliament for the first time ever on Wednesday, when lawmaker Gilda Sportiello breastfed her son Federico in the Chamber of Deputies, triggering a round of applause from fellow members. The event would be more commonplace in many countries, but was underlined by the acting lower-house speaker in traditionally male-dominated Italy. Best wishes to Federico for a long, free, and peaceful life," said Giorgio Mule as he chaired the parliamentary session. Giorgia Meloni took office in October as Italy's first woman prime minister, but around two-thirds of the country's lawmakers are men. While the event on Wednesday was a first for Italy, 13 years ago Licia Ronzulli, now a senator in the centre-right Forza Italia party, breastfed her daughter in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Three New Story Collections Make Place a Protagonist

The Turkish president Recep Erdogan looms large in Kenan Orhan’s I AM MY COUNTRY: And Other Stories (Random House, 227 pp., $27), a powerful and provocative debut collection with a vivid sense of place. A garbagewoman hoards discarded items she finds in the course of her collections: musical scores, musical instruments, eventually musicians. This smart, heartfelt saga is dragged down by talking birds who pithily argue ethics with their would-be keeper. In “The Smuggler,” set during the Syrian civil war, a Syrian man must get a pregnant 15-year-old Kurdish girl across the border into Turkey by pretending to be her husband. This is Orhan at his best: finding comedy lurking on the outskirts of tragedy, reveling in the inherent absurdism of the all-too-real.
CNN —Kouri Richins’ husband was found dead at the foot of their bed last March. Around 9 p.m., she brought her husband, Eric Richins, a celebratory Moscow Mule cocktail in the bedroom of their home in Kamas, Utah. Newly released court documents detailed a series of illicit fentanyl purchases in the months leading up to his death. By this time, according to court documents, Kouri Richins no longer owned the property. Kouri Richins said she wrote a book on grief with her sons to help them articulate their feelings, she said.
Ms. Richins published “Are You With Me?” on March 7, just over a year after her husband’s death. A lawyer for Ms. Richins did not immediately respond to a request for comment. She made her husband a Moscow mule, a cocktail, in the kitchen around 9 p.m. and brought it to their bedroom, where Mr. Richins drank it in bed. Ms. Richins later told investigators that she went to bed and woke up around 3 a.m., because one of the boys was having a nightmare. When she returned to the couple’s bedroom, Ms. Richins told investigators, she “felt Eric and he was cold to the touch.” She called 911, according to court documents.
Ugly As Sin and Toastier Than Hades: Meet the Puffer Shoe

LAST DECEMBER, Marcus Wilson cracked. They resemble “the slippers my nana once wore,” Mr. Wilson said. “But they’re so warm I don’t care.”Behold the puffer—a clumpy, shlumpy, wildly unsexy breed of “ugly shoe” that makes Crocs look like Manolos. Basically parkas for your toes, these men’s and women’s styles are generally crafted from layers of padded insulation and water-resistant nylon. Prada makes a hefty boot version; Ugg offers a clog-like take; and Nike sells a fluffed-up mule.
My obsession is summed up pretty well by a tweet from @blagojevism: "George Santos is essentially a 19th-century character. Media depicting these characters found inspiration from real life: in a time before digital records and facial recognition, opportunity was everywhere. George Santos's brand of full-throated scammery is particularly American, something that belongs to this country as much as Abraham Lincoln and apple pie. The phrase "and if you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you" comes from his legendary real-life method. But Santos, so far, has avoided jail time, giving him at least one leg up over the Yellow Kid.

Over the past several months, we followed several New York musical scenes that reflect the city’s creative soul, thriving in community centers, local bars and public parks. The sight of a new generation encouraged Mr. Joseph, who sees the band as preserving traditional culture in the modern city. It becomes part of you.” New York itself is as much a player as any musician, transforming traditional tunes into something new. The people who embraced Mateo and his mother when they moved from Boston to New York in 2016 now consoled her.
JACK DUNLEAVY was bombarded by mules while scrolling through fashion videos on TikTok a few months ago. Or rather, one mule: the Birkenstock Boston, a unisex slip-on often rendered in earthy shades of suede. “They were on menswear accounts, in ‘Day in the Life’ videos—everybody was wearing them,” said Mr. Dunleavy, 29, a software engineer from Dallas. He felt compelled to acquire his own pair to shuffle about in fashionably, but hit a stumbling block: The shoes, in the color he wanted, were sold out everywhere he looked.
