Angela Weiss/AFP/Getty Images“I think that’s just part of life and just part of learning. Among the things that helped the most with that process, Gauff said, was putting her life “into perspective” when she started to feel overwhelmed. “That’s real pressure, that’s real hardship, that’s real life. Gauff has expertly handled the pressure during her US Open run. “So that’s the reason why, I think it’s just putting my life in perspective and realizing how grateful and blessed I am.”

"When you get to the last stages of the tournament, you're going to think about what if, what I want, what I would like and you're dreaming," Sabalenka told reporters after crushing China's Zheng Qinwen on Wednesday. "I'm not trying to block the stats, because when you're trying to block something it's going to keep getting in your head and it can get annoying. When you're not trying to block it, it actually goes away. Keys, meanwhile, is hoping to fulfil her own dream of reaching Saturday's final for another shot at a maiden Grand Slam trophy. Czech Muchova is also gunning for a first Grand Slam title after coming close in Paris in her bid to join an elite list of compatriots that includes Jana Novotna, Petra Kvitova, Barbora Krejcikova and Vondrousova.

During the delay, Gauff and Muchova headed off the court and tried to stay loose in the locker room and the warm-up area. Muchova got a massage and jogged lightly in the hallway outside the locker room. She said later that she woke up Thursday morning thinking that a climate protest might break out, as they had at the French Open in 2022 and Wimbledon this year. She and her family celebrated in Paris, then she won six matches at the French Open before losing to the world No. Over the past four years, Gauff has evolved into the most likely candidate to fill the void, breaking out at Wimbledon when she was 15 and making her French Open run last year.

Not when match point after match point went by the wayside. Gauff, a 19-year-old from Florida, reached her first final at Flushing Meadows by defeating Muchova 6-4, 7-5 on what was anything but an ordinary evening. When action resumed, the play was pretty even for several games, until Gauff surged ahead and got her first match point. — Gauff deserved credit for finding the right times to let Muchova miss as opposed to trying to get too aggressive. “You have to be focused and finish points," Muchova said about the challenge that facing Gauff presents.

They grow up fast these days, and none faster than Coco Gauff. In September, she is a U.S. Open finalist, the star attraction of her home Grand Slam tournament and the new face of her sport in America. Gauff, the 19-year-old prodigy from steamy South Florida, beat Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 7-5, to reach her first U.S. Open singles final on a warm and heavy Thursday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Muchova’s all-court game and the strangest of atmospherics tested her as never before, but in the end the night went her way in front a crowd that exploded for her over and over along the way. “Some of those points were so loud I don’t know if my ears are going to be OK,” she said in her on-court interview.

"I felt very good actually from the start till the end," Muchova told reporters. "I had a good feeling with the ball from the baseline, I felt good on the net, slicing, and with my whole game. French Open finalist Muchova got off to a quick start and raced out to a 3-0 lead before fending off nine break points to win a marathon game and extend to 4-0. A flustered Cirstea's backhand then landed wide to put her opponent up 5-0 and Muchova completed the bagel the next game. Next up for Muchova is Gauff, who was a 6-0 6-2 winner over Jelena Ostapenko earlier in the day.

By the time it was over, Ostapenko had 36 unforced errors compared to 14 for Gauff. With the win, Gauff avenged her round of 16 loss to the Latvian at this year's Australian Open that left the American in tears. Despite delivering a lopsided win to reach the second semi-final of her career, Gauff said she never felt comfortable on the court against Ostapenko. "I know the game she plays, she has ability to come back no matter the scoreline, so I was just really trying to get every point, trying to play every ball in," said Gauff. Up next for Gauff, who is the youngest American to reach the U.S. Open semi-finals since Serena Williams in 2001, will be either Czech 10th seed and French Open finalist Karolina Muchova or Romanian 30th seed Sorana Cirstea.

NEW YORK (AP) — Coco Gauff dealt just fine with the heat, the humidity, her big-hitting opponent and the task of trying to reach the U.S. Open semifinals for the first time, defeating 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-0, 6-2 on Tuesday. Her best Grand Slam showing so far was making it to the final at Roland Garros last year. Gauff lost that title match to Iga Swiatek and those two could have met again in the U.S. Open quarterfinals. When she is on the mark, as she was Sunday night against Swiatek, Ostapenko can be as challenging an opponent as there is, because she goes for broke on nearly every stroke. While her greatest success has come on grass, 2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina's style can be devastating on hard courts, as she showed in some key clashes with major rivals on the surface this year. The 24-year-old beat Sabalenka in the Indian Wells final and got the better of Swiatek in straight sets at both the Australian Open and Indian Wells. Muchova will be feeling particularly confident, having reached the final of the Cincinnati Masters with wins over two top-10 ranked players -- Sabalenka and Sakkari. Muchova's compatriot Vondrousova will be hoping to build on her title-winning Wimbledon run, while two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova is one of the most experienced players in the draw and will prove a tough test for any opponent. The presence of former world number ones Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki, who have been given wild cards by organisers, adds another layer of unpredictability to the draw.

June 13 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic reclaimed the world number one ranking from Carlos Alcaraz after winning his men's record 23rd Grand Slam title at the French Open, while Rafa Nadal dropped out of the top 100 for the first time in 20 years. Alcaraz dropped to second place while Daniil Medvedev, who crashed out in the first round, also slid one place down to third. Nadal, a 14-times French Open champion, has endured an injury-plagued season and not played since January because of a hip injury sustained during the Australian Open. In the women's rankings, Iga Swiatek retained top spot after defending her French Open title. French Open finalist Muchova climbed from 43rd to a career-high 16th.
