Mr. Hassan fell from a particularly dangerous stretch of the climbing trail on K2 known as the bottleneck and later died. “There was no rescue mission,” Wilhelm Steindl, an Austrian climber who provided video footage of other climbers stepping over Mr. Hassan on the narrow mountain path, said in an interview with Sky News. “Seventy mountaineers stepped over a living guy who needed big help at this moment, and they decided to keep on going to the summit.”The authorities in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region, where a portion of the mountain is located, identified Mr. Hassan as a “high-altitude porter.” They said they were investigating whether “adequate efforts were made to rescue” Mr. Hassan, whom Ms. Harila said was part of another team. The authorities said they would examine the conditions of Mr. Hassan’s climbing gear and “ascertain who authorized him to climb with equipment that might have been insufficient for such high-altitude expeditions and his level of experience.”People frequently die summiting the tallest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest and K2. The treks are so dangerous that the bodies of fallen climbers are sometimes left behind, and some are never recovered.

CNN —A Norwegian woman and a Nepali man smashed the record on Thursday for the fastest summit of all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre (26,000-feet) mountains, their team said in a statement. The pair surpassed Nepal-born British adventurer Nirmal Purja’s record of six months and six days, set in 2019. Purja is now attempting to set the record for the fastest ascent of all 14 peaks without supplemental oxygen, he said on Twitter. Mount Everest, the tallest of the 14 highest peaks, issued permits for a record number of climbers this year, for this spring season’s expeditions. According to Nepali officials as the spring climbing season came to an end in June, 12 people died and five were missing on Everest.

Mountaineers have long climbed atop Mount Everest, and scientists in submersibles have descended into the Antarctic Ocean. In recent decades, travelers with deep pockets and little expertise have joined these explorers or even ventured further, paying to visit the bottom of the ocean or the edge of space, touching the literal bounds of Earth. But as the deaths of five people aboard the Titan submersible make evident, there are no clear safeguards in place when something goes wrong. It also raises questions about when risk is too great and dangers too immense for rescue. This all comes at a time when an increasing number of thrill seekers are undertaking risky — and riskier — adventures and expeditions.

CNN —Gelje Sherpa was on his way to the top of the world’s highest mountain when he spotted the climber clinging to the rope. The climber, from Malaysia, had “nothing” and was “about to die,” the 30-year-old Nepali mountain guide told CNN’s Anderson Cooper in an interview Thursday. The sherpa has previously carried out more than 55 rescues, some very long operations, but said this was the “hardest in my life.”Ngima Tashi Sherpa carries a Malaysian climber from the death zone at Mount Everest on May 18, 2023. In recent years, as death tolls have risen on the mountain, climbers and experts have also warned of the dangers of overcrowding. Nepal issued permits for a record 478 climbers for this season’s expeditions to Everest, according to the department’s data.

The country earned $5.8 million in permit fees - $5 million from Mount Everest alone – during this year's March-May climbing season. Expeditions hiring sherpas must take out life insurance for them, but the pay out is just 1.5 million Nepali rupees (about $11,300). KATHMANDU, May 26 (Reuters) - A renowned U.S. mountain guide has achieved the rare Mount Everest region "triple crown" of climbing the Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse peaks in one season, a hiking firm said on Friday, as the season's death toll on the world's highest mountain hit 12. Madison, who owns the company Madison Mountaineering based in Seattle, climbed the smaller but technically difficult Nuptse peak, at 7,855 metres (25,770 feet), on May 8. British climber Kenton Cool, who climbed the triple crown in 2013, said Garrett was an "unflappable expedition leader" who quietly goes about his job. Cool, 49, last week set a new record of 17 summits of Everest, the world's highest peak, by a foreign climber. A Nepali, Kami Rita Sherpa, this week climbed Everest for a 28th time, the most by any mountaineer.
Nepal CNN —A US climber has died on his way to scale Mount Everest on Monday, according to an expedition organizer. “Jonathan Sugarman died at Camp 2 after he began to feel unwell,” Pasang Sherpa told CNN on Tuesday. Spring is the most popular time to climb Mount Everest with most climbers aiming to ascend the peak in May. “The geography we can’t change… but we are trying to manage by adding multiple ropes,” Yubaraj Khatiwada, the director of Nepal’s Tourism Department, told CNN. Nepal is home to eight of the 10 highest mountains in the world, so mountaineering is a significant source of revenue for Sherpas, despite the risks associated with climbing Everest.

So far, Nepal has handed out a record 463 permits to climb Everest between March and May, beating 2021's 409. Climbing is a key earner for the poor country, where about 500,000 people are employed in tourism, including climbing, and the number of permits has been rising steadily. So far this year, Nepal has granted permits to 1,046 climbers for 24 peaks, earning the government $5.6 million, of which $5 million came from Everest alone. He said the government was considering introducing a requirement for climbers to scale at least one 6,000-metre peak in Nepal before attempting Everest.
CNN —Nepal has issued permits for a record 463 climbers so far for this spring season’s expeditions to Mount Everest even as experts worry about dangerous overcrowding at the summit. Spring is the prime time to climb Mount Everest, although some mountaineers might climb in the less favorable autumn season. Warnings of too many people on EverestMountaineers have warned of the dangers of overcrowding on Everest. “The geography we can’t change… but we are trying to manage by adding multiple ropes,” Khatiwada told CNN. Three Sherpas died earlier this month after being buried by a block of snow on Everest, according to the official.
An experienced alpinist from Northern Ireland was found dead and another climber from India went missing on the same mountain in central Nepal on Tuesday. The Northern Irish climber, Noel Hanna, who had scaled Mount Everest 10 times, was found dead inside his tent at Camp 4 of Annapurna after scaling the 26,545-foot-tall mountain without supplemental oxygen on Monday, officials said. Yubaraj Khatiwada, a tourism official in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, said the cause of Mr. Hanna’s death was unclear. The climber had just descended from Annapurna, the world’s 10th-highest peak, according to his expedition agency, Seven Summit Treks. Mr. Khatiwada also said that two Indian mountaineers went missing on Monday after losing radio contact with the base.
Noel Hanna, who had climbed Mount Everest 10 times, scaled the 8,091 metres (26,545 feet) Annapurna peak in west Nepal on Monday and died overnight in Camp IV after descending from the peak. He said an Indian climber, who fell into a crevasse on the lower reaches of Annapurna, has been missing since Monday. Two other Indian mountaineers, who were caught up in bad weather while climbing Annapurna, were being rescued, hiking company officials said. Annapurna peak in west Nepal, first climbed by Maurice Herzog of France in the early 1950s, is considered dangerous because of the risk of frequent avalanches. At least 365 people have climbed Annapurna and more than 72 have died on the mountain, according to hiking officials.

Climbers who ascend higher than 26,000 feet on Mount Everest enter the "death zone." In the death zone, climbers' brains and lungs are starved for oxygen, their risk of heart attack and stroke is increased, and their judgment quickly becomes impaired. In 2019, at least 11 people died on Everest, almost all of whom spent time in the death zone. These extra, unplanned hours in the death zone might have put the 11 people who perished at higher risk, though it's hard to determine the specific causes of each death. Temperatures in the death zone never rise above zero degrees Fahrenheit.
