CAMDEN, Maine — A Republican lawmaker in Maine accused of choking his wife last month won re-election by a single vote after a Thursday recount. According to a police affidavit obtained by WCSH, Lanigan is accused of choking his wife after she confronted him about an alleged affair. His race against Democratic challenger Patty Kidder for a state House seat representing part of Southern Maine initially ended in an apparent tie. But prosecutors are continuing to pursue the case, saying domestic violence victims sometimes recant under pressure from abusers, according to WCSH. Five seats in the state House have yet to be decided, pending recounts.

A majority of full-time workers, 66%, got a raise in the last year whether they asked for one or not, according to an October survey of 2,049 people from LendingTree. And not everyone is asking for a raise at equal rates: Just 35% of women discussed getting a raise, compared with 49% of men, according to LendingTree data. By age range, Gen Z and millennial workers (ages 18 to 43) are most comfortable negotiating for a pay increase. However, the second most-common reason people took a pay cut, at 17%, was in order to take another job with less stress. Roughly one-third of people who experienced a pay cut in the last year saw their salary drop by less than $5,000.

He did not show up, according to two people familiar with the matter. A week later, Mr. Rivera went on a rampage, randomly stabbing three people to death as he stalked across Manhattan, the authorities say. Mr. Rivera’s apparent descent into homicidal madness shows the difficulty that the medical and legal systems have in keeping track of some of the city’s least stable people and ensuring they stay connected to care. He was required to attend two in-person sessions with a case manager, complete two phone check-ins and go to therapy in the first month. That schedule was one of the strictest available under the supervised release program.

“Far too often, patients relying on federal government health care programs are forced to accept bureaucratic, one-size-fits-all coverage,” Crapo said. But Trump’s lack of specificity about health care could empower Oz to fill in the blanks. Oz said on an AARP questionnaire: “We can expand Medicare Advantage plans. If Oz is confirmed and chooses to push more people into Medicare Advantage, as he has pitched, he may not have too hard a time. “In our focus groups, people say they’re satisfied with both traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage, and they make their choices based on different preferences,” Neuman said.

Investors shouldn't let a smaller-than-expected guidance beat overshadow tailwinds from Nvidia's looming Blackwell graphics processing unit rollout come January. Citi's Atif Malik lifted the firm's price target to $175 and opened a positive catalyst ahead of the consumer electronics show in January. Wells Fargo's Aaron Rakers moved to a $185 price target, reflecting 27% upside from Wednesday's close. Meanwhile, JPMorgan's Harlan Sur lifted his price target to $170 a share, saying that margins should improve toward the mid-70s range in the second half of 2025 as Nvidia streamlines costs. What's next for the stock Despite strong Blackwell expectations, some analysts warn of potential near-term volatility.

During a hearing before a senate judiciary subcommittee in May 2023, Altman said he gets "paid enough for health insurance" and that he receives no equity in OpenAI. Bloomberg estimated in March 2024 that the CEO is worth at least $2 billion, not including any stake he may have in OpenAI. Altman denied during an all-hands meeting with employees that there were plans for him to receive a "giant euqity stake," CNBC reported.

When Tomas Gorny started a tech business in 2001, he wasn't thinking about becoming a billionaire someday. Gorny started a business called Ipower, which sold software that helped people build their own websites. Six years later, he sold Ipower to web hosting company Endurance International for a reported $100 million. Perhaps ironically, Gorny says the more modest goal helped helped him grow his company's bottom line far more effectively. Once he released his more developed products, Ipower started adding hundreds of new customers per day, he says.

Government crucial to Musk’s net worthIt’s worthwhile to ask just how much of his world-leading net worth comes from government help over the last 10 to 15 years. Tesla and SpaceX got started – and survived their early days – with assistance from state and federal policies, government contracts and loans. Tesla buyers received federal tax credits worth an estimated $3.4 billion before the perk disappeared entirely for Tesla buyers at the end of 2019. “Take away the subsidies, it will only help Tesla,” Musk posted on his social media platform X in July. According to USASpending.gov, the government database that tracks federal spending, SpaceX has signed contracts worth nearly $20 billion.

CNN —Thanksgiving dinner will cost less this year than last but will still be 19% higher than before the pandemic, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual Thanksgiving survey out Wednesday. The average cost of this year’s dinner for 10 people is $58.08, or about $5.80 per person, the survey found. The center piece of the Thanksgiving meal, the turkey, helped bring down the overall cost. But items like cubed stuffing and dinner rolls both increased by 8% because of higher labor costs, the AFBF said. The cost of the Thanksgiving dinner items varies based on location, the survey found.

Cable networks are still profitable, but they're hemorrhaging subscribers and revenue every year as Americans cancel traditional pay TV for streaming services. Still, Disney's cable networks, including FX and Disney Channel, are more integrated with its streaming platforms than NBCUniversal's cable networks are with Peacock, the company's subscription streaming service. That may ultimately be where cable networks are heading — to private ownership willing to harvest them for cash. Another possible path for the spinoff is as a rollup entity for other cable networks. “We’re expecting this holiday period to be very consistent with that,” he said. Retailers, including Walmart, are contending with a mixed bag of factors this holiday season. The holiday season is also shorter this year and parts of the U.S. have had unseasonably warm weather, two dynamics that could hurt retailers. That would be lower than the 3.9% year-over-year jump from the 2022 to 2023 holiday season, when spending totaled $955.6 billion. Rainey said the holiday period is “off to a pretty good start.”He said items like TVs, Apple AirPods, Beats headphones and even tires have been selling.

China has set a growth target of "around 5%" for 2024, though Bank of America and Citigroup, among others, have projected the world's second-largest economy will grow at under 5%. The World Bank has pegged China growth in 2024 at 4.8%, and expects it to decline further to 4.3% next year, despite a recent slate measures to boost the economy. The World Bank cited headwinds such as sluggish Chinese consumer spending, a struggling property market and an ageing population as key concerns for the world's second-largest economy. But even with Trump’s gains among men, women still had greater leverage to decide the election’s outcome. Both the exit polls and VoteCast showed her winning 57% of white women with at least a four-year college degree. Solid majorities of Black, Latina and college-educated White women described Trump in the exit poll as “too extreme,” as did over two-fifths of the White women without a college degree. But among the White women without a college degree who described Trump as “too extreme,” almost 1 in 5 voted for him anyway. Though many women are expressing unease about mass deportation, Trump’s claim that immigrants are driving crime may provide him considerable leeway to pursue his agenda, particularly among the blue-collar White women who proved most receptive to that argument.

Pure-play electric vehicle stocks like Rivian and Lucid are flat and down more than 3%, respectively, since Trump's victory. So why is Tesla soaring even as a second Trump administration is expected to fundamentally disrupt the U.S. electric vehicle market? And increased tariffs could make inputs for electric vehicles more expensive. These headwinds ignore the fact that Trump's new best friend is Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi told clients in a Monday note. But Tesla's fundamentals are largely steady postelection, while Musk's relationship with Trump underlines how Tesla largely controls the self-driving vehicle narrative, the analyst said.
