SpaceX founder Elon Musk and T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert on stage during a T-Mobile and SpaceX joint event in Boca Chica Beach, Texas, on Aug. 25, 2022. SpaceX successfully sent text messages via Starlink satellites using T-Mobile's network, it announced Wednesday, as Elon Musk's company aims to bring its direct-to-device cell service to market in the coming year. The recent test comes as major players pursue the market to connect unmodified phones directly to satellites, a nascent subsector of the space economy. SpaceX last week launched the first six Starlink satellites equipped with direct-to-device, or D2D, capabilities, after receiving authorization from the Federal Communications Commission last month to test the technology. The company said it performed the texting demonstration on Monday — in which SpaceX "sent and received our first text messages to and from unmodified cell phones on the ground to our new satellites in space" — and declared the test "validates" that "the system works."

By any measure, cash-bleeding Rakuten Mobile is deeply troubled. Rakuten is set for another tough year in 2024 with investors keen to see if it can achieve its goal of having the mobile unit break even. Those steps have raised some 800 billion yen ($5.4 billion). Then in October, SoftBank Corp (9434.T), Japan's No.3 mobile network provider, began offering a generous reward campaign for most mobile users using SoftBank Group's (9984.T) PayPay online payment system. Without profits, the mobile unit is not likely to entice would-be suitors and competition laws would probably prevent the likes of SoftBank and Docomo from bidding.

T-Mobile now expects adjusted free cash flow for the year to be between $13.4 billion and $13.6 billion, compared with its prior forecast of $13.2 billion to $13.6 billion. T-Mobile added 850,000 postpaid phone customers in the third quarter, the highest among peers, beating FactSet estimates of 773,400 additions. It raised its full-year forecast for wireless subscriber net additions to between 5.7 million and 5.9 million, up from its earlier forecast of 5.6 million to 5.9 million. The telecom industry has been seeing a gradual moderation in postpaid phone net additions after hitting record levels in 2021 and 2022. Industry-wide postpaid phone net additions are expected to moderate in 2023 to 8.5 million from a near-record 9.3 million in 2022, according to analysts at Goldman Sachs.

Late Bardhi goal earns North Macedonia 1-1 draw with Italy
  + stars: | 2023-09-09 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
SKOPJE, North Macedonia, Sept 9 (Reuters) - North Macedonia captain Enis Bardhi's stunning free kick cancelled out Ciro Immobile's header to earn a 1-1 home draw against Italy in their Euro 2024 Group C qualifier on Saturday, spoiling Luciano Spalletti's debut as the Azzurri coach. Italy remain third in the group level on four points with fourth-placed North Macedonia although the Italians have only played three games to their opponents' four. Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali hit the post with a low shot shortly after and Bryan Cristante was denied by goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski from close range. But Bardhi did finally conjure up a late equaliser to give his side a boost before they visit bottom side Malta on Tuesday. Millions of auto workers and suppliers in China are feeling the heat as an electric vehicle price war forces carmakers to shave costs anywhere they can. State-run China Automotive News estimates there are over 100,000 auto suppliers in the country. Suppliers typically negotiate prices once a year, but many have been pressed to lower prices on a quarterly basis in 2023, two senior executives at auto suppliers said. And in June, a group of small suppliers wrote to state-owned Changan Automobile to push back against 10% price reductions. Three months later, he told Reuters that price cuts had been more aggressive in 2023 than in previous years.

July 27 (Reuters) - T-Mobile US (TMUS.O) topped Wall Street expectations for quarterly wireless subscriber additions on Thursday, as cost-conscious customers flocked to its cheaper plans and superior 5G services in a highly competitive market. The U.S. wireless carrier said it added 760,000 postpaid phone subscribers - its highest second-quarter additions in eight years. The figure was also higher than additions posted by rivals AT&T and Verizon and beat expectations of 708,800, according to Visible Alpha. Total revenue for the quarter fell 2.6% to $19.20 billion, missing analysts' estimate of $19.31 billion, according to Refinitiv data. By contrast, Verizon reported a churn of 0.83% for monthly phone subscribers, while AT&T's came in at 0.79%.

Proximus Opal, a unit of Belgian telecom service provider Proximus Group, has clients such as Salesforce and Bytedance, while Route Mobile's clients include Amazon and Indian telecom service provider Airtel. However, Clear Bridge Ventures, an affiliate of some Route Mobile promoters, will buy a minority stake of up to 14.5% in Proximus Opal for about 299.6 million euros (nearly $337 million). Proximus Opal will also have to make an offer to buy an additional stake of up to 26% in Route Mobile at the same price from retail shareholders, according to Indian regulations. LONDON, June 28 (Reuters) - Zeekr, Geely Automobile's (0175.HK) electric brand, said on Wednesday that two of its all-electric luxury cars are available for pre-order in the Netherlands and Sweden, joining a growing number of Chinese EV makers launching vehicles in Europe. Deliveries for the Zeekr 001 estate and the Zeekr X SUV are set to begin in the autumn, the company said. Pricing for the Zeekr 01 starts at 59,490 euros ($65,076) including taxes, while the Zeekr X starts 44,990 euros. "Our plan is that through 2026 we will cover the majority of western Europe," he told Reuters. Other Chinese EV makers including BYD, Xpeng and Aiways have all launched sales in Europe, seeking to gain market share while many consumers are still new to EVs.

Wolfe Research has once again turned bullish on T-Mobile following a recent bout of underperformance. The stock has fallen 9.6% so far this year, an underperformance that has made Supino optimistic that the stock will have upside. That's because of the 4% or more organic postpaid service revenue growth expected through 2024 and positive current-quarter guidance on postpaid phone net adds despite decelerations elsewhere. T-Mobile should be able to continue getting the bulk of Big-3 net adds given its under-index to small markets, he said. And Supino said the company should feel the last tailwinds from churn reducing among Sprint subscribers after it merged with T-Mobile.

April 27 (Reuters) - Wireless carrier T-Mobile US Inc (TMUS.O) missed Wall Street estimates for first-quarter revenue and monthly bill-paying phone subscriber additions on Thursday, weighed down by intense competition and consumers postponing upgrades to their plans. T-Mobile added 538,000 monthly bill-paying phone subscribers in the quarter, compared to analysts' expectation of 547,800 net additions, according to FactSet. T-Mobile, however, raised its full-year forecast for wireless subscriber growth. It now expects wireless subscriber net additions between 5.3 million and 5.7 million, compared with its earlier forecast of 5.0 million to 5.5 million in the year through December. Analysts and investors generally watch wireless subscriber phone figures closely as those customers pay a recurring monthly bill, making them valuable to the carriers.
The deal was opposed by consumer advocates and politicians on worries it could lead to higher prices due to an overlap between Rogers and Shaw's wireless divisions. Rogers reaffirmed its conditions, including setting up a western headquarters in Calgary, creating 3,000 new jobs in Western Canada and investing C$6.5 billion to upgrade connectivity. If it breaches the commitments, Rogers (RCIb.TO) will have to pay a fine of as much as C$1 billion, Champagne said at a news conference in Ottawa. Champagne said if wireless prices do not go lower, he would seek further legislative and regulatory powers. Rosa Addario, a spokesperson for internet advocacy group OpenMedia, said the concessions sought by the government were unlikely to result in lower prices.

March 31 (Reuters) - Canada on Friday granted the final approval for Rogers Communications Inc's (RCIb.TO) C$20 billion ($15 billion) buyout of Shaw Communications Inc (SJRb.TO), clearing the deal that will create the country's No. 2 telecoms company. March 15 (Reuters) - T-Mobile US Inc (TMUS.O) said on Wednesday it would buy Ka'ena Corp, the owner of Ryan Reynolds-backed budget service provider Mint Mobile, for up to $1.35 billion, as the telecom operator looks to maintain growth in a competitive market. The deal will allow T-Mobile to tap a larger share of the pay-as-you-go customer base, whose numbers are expected to swell as credit-challenged people shy away from hefty monthly bills. The purchase will add slightly to T-Mobile's core adjusted earnings, but is not expected to affect its outlook for the year. "Over the long term, we'll also benefit from applying the marketing formula Mint has become famous for across more parts of T-Mobile," said Mike Sievert, Chief Executive Officer of T-Mobile.
