Myanmar’s junta has lost communications with senior officers at a major military base near the Chinese border, in a rare admission of battlefield failure after rebels announced they had taken control of the key regional army headquarters. Junta troops have been unable to contact an undisclosed number of officers at the besieged northeastern regional command, military spokesman Zaw Min Tun said Monday, following weeks of intense fighting in and around the town. “The rapid fall of the Myanmar army’s Northeastern Command makes it fully clear to the ranks of the resistance and to neighboring countries just how weak the Myanmar military has become,” said Jason Tower at the United States Institute of Peace. “For Min Aung Hlaing, the implications are existential,” he said, referring to the embattled junta chief. “We will also continue to fight as allies until the military falls,” said the statement from the Kachin, Karen and Chin groups.

CNN —Venezuela’s Public Ministry has opened a criminal investigation into presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia and opposition leader María Corina Machado, the country’s Attorney General Tarek William Saab said in a statement on Monday. The opposition, which enjoyed strong polling figures prior to the vote, says it won by a landslide. Machado said last week that González won by a landslide, and posted on X a link to what she says are the results from Sunday’s election. The US, among the countries that consider González the winner, said last week that it was“clear” President Maduro lost the popular vote. Protests broke out across Venezuela following the vote, which saw the government detain hundreds of opposition supporters.

Anything above 4% indicates the market is overbought, anything below a minus 5% means the market is oversold.) I am just prematurely predicting other investors fleeing the stock because they think Warren knows more than them. Many investors thought that Amazon was the best set up of the Mag Seven going into earnings. We are right smack in a most perilous moment because the Fed doesn't want to move too fast but the stock market does and the Fed does not care about that. I don't think a presidential election is all that conducive to the market.

Hedge fund industry insiders are abuzz right now about "portable alpha," a blast-from-the-past strategy that's undergoing a revival. According to the Morgan Stanley white paper, it can take on a variety of forms, including "dedicated portable alpha funds, portable alpha share classes, portable alpha feeder funds and other solutions." “This is the first study that actually looked at a relatively large number of patients for whether there is any neuroprotective effect in Alzheimer’s disease,” Edison said. The trial enrolled predominantly people with mild Alzheimer’s disease, measured by a test known as the Mini-Mental State Examination, a scale that goes up to 30. The GLP-1 drug class also includes Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and Zepbound, which use the active ingredient tirzepatide, which mimics not just the hormone GLP-1 but another called GIP. Read previewLate last year, Amazon projected its healthcare businesses to lose more than $1 billion for 2024, according to an internal planning document obtained by Business Insider. Although the company doesn't breakout financials on the healthcare business, investors will be looking for signs of success when it reports results on Thursday. That was mostly thanks to Amazon Pharmacy, which was projected to generate $1.81 billion in 2024 sales, a 45% surge. Amazon healthcare is slowing investments in smaller initiatives by delaying hiring for certain projects and reducing contractor spend, it added. It's upgrading the signup process, such as insurance card capture technology, and simplifying the linking between One Medical and Amazon Pharmacy accounts.

Editor’s note: A version of this story appeared in CNN’s Wonder Theory science newsletter. Thousands of years ago, our ancestors produced the first maps of the stars and practiced alchemy, the precursor to chemistry. But ancient alchemists actually developed technology and discovered chemical elements that are still widely used today. Now, a new discovery links both astronomy and alchemy in one intriguing figure who lived during the Renaissance. China's military is loyal and will faithfully execute the policies set down by the Communist Party. In June, Chinese Leader Xi Jinping reminded the Central Military Commission — the country's top political-military body — that the military reports to the Communist Party. "Xi stressed that political work is always the lifeline of the country's military. "Xi stresses PLA's political loyalty at crucial meeting held in old revolutionary base," read the Global Times headline. Beyond military corruption, Xi also is concerned about what he sees as decadence in Chinese society — especially among young people — which is undermining Chinese military power.

That’s the credo of Elizabeth Glaser, a public health nurse for the Indian Health Service, who drives thousands of miles throughout the Navajo Nation searching for community members with the infection. While other reportable sexually transmitted infections declined or remained flat during the pandemic, over 207,000 cases of syphilis were reported in 2022, an 80 percent increase since 2018 and the highest number reported since 1950. Most disturbing within this trend is the rise in congenital syphilis. Over 3,700 cases were reported in 2022, which is more than double the number of cases of mother-to-child transmission of H.I.V. To tackle congenital syphilis, we must cast off societal squeamishness about S.T.I.s and invest in proven control strategies: public education, testing, treatment and contact tracing.

New York CNN —Customers on social media have been furious with Chipotle for allegedly skimping on its burrito bowl portions this year. “First, there was never a directive to provide less to our customers,” CEO Brian Niccol said during an earnings call Wednesday. In June, a Wells Fargo analyst ordered and weighed 75 Chipotle burrito bowls with white rice, black beans, chicken, pico de gallo, cheese and lettuce across eight Chipotle locations in New York City. The bowls weighed roughly the same for in-store orders and online orders, but some locations served bowls that weighed 33% more than other locations. Some burrito bowls went to extremes, with one topping out at 27 ounces in one location, and a meager 14 ounces in another.

More than 200,000 people are estimated to have been abused by state and religious organizations in New Zealand that had been entrusted with their care, according to the final report from a landmark independent inquiry released on Wednesday.
