Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was injured and admitted to a hospital in Luxembourg while on a congressional delegation trip to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, a Pelosi spokesperson said. "Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals," Ian Krager, a spokesperson for Pelosi's congressional office wrote in a statement to reporters on Friday. It was not immediately clear what kind of injury the former speaker sustained or how long she would need to be treated in the hospital. Other members traveling with Pelosi included Reps. Mike McCaul, R-Texas, Gary Palmer, R-Ala., Mike Bost, R-Ill., and Mark Takano, D-Calif. Fifteen years after being elected the first female speaker, Pelosi announced in 2022 that she was officially stepping down from House Democratic leadership.

As President Joe Biden makes a final push to confirm judicial nominees before his term in office ends, he is on track to have appointed more federal judges of color than any president before him. If Cheeks is approved, Biden will have appointed 63 Black federal judges, the most of a presidency of any length, according to the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. Both Obama and Bill Clinton each appointed 62 Black judges over the course of their two terms. Senate Democrats vowed to confirm as many Biden nominees as possible before Trump takes office in January and Republicans take control of the Senate. They’ve confirmed dozens since Election Day, but these circuit nominees are in limbo amid some opposition from Democrats as well as GOP senators.

Paris CNN —France’s embattled President Emmanuel Macron has appointed centrist ally Francois Bayrou as prime minister, he announced on Friday, as he seeks to calm a political crisis that has left his authority dwindling by the day. Bayrou ran for president three times before rallying behind Macron in 2017. The 73-year old is the founder of the centrist Democratic Movement political party (MoDem), and mayor of the southwestern town of Pau. Barnier’s minority government collapsed after just three months as it attempted to pass a 2025 budget, which included €60 billion ($62.9 billion) worth of tax hikes. Bayrou will take on that challenge, but it is unclear whether his stint in office will prove more fruitful than his predecessor.

CNN —A crucial dam is at risk as fighting continues in several areas of northern Syria between Kurdish groups and Turkish-backed factions. However, video surfaced Friday purporting to show fighters from a Turkish-backed group in control of the bridge over the dam. Some experts have expressed concern that the fighting could damage the dam and cause extensive flooding of more than 40 villages downstream. The SDF has been a US ally since 2017 in the battle to eradicate ISIS, the terror group which at one point held a large swathe of northern Syria. The SDF and other Kurdish elements have controlled several enclaves in northern Syria since regime control in the north evaporated when ISIS was at its height in 2015.

WASHINGTON — A group of House Republicans representing high-tax states is demanding an increase to the federal deduction for state and local taxes, also known as “SALT,” in order to support an extension of President-elect Donald Trump's tax law next year. The battle centers on the $10,000 limit on deductions for state and local taxes, which Republicans established in a 2017 tax cut bill. You guys can do the math on that one,” Rep. Nick LaLota, R-N.Y., a proponent of a bigger SALT deduction, told NBC News. Because an expiration of [the 2017 tax law] would completely eliminate [the cap on] SALT,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., a member of the tax-writing Ways & Means Committee, said in an interview. “I think it would be fiscally irresponsible not to have a SALT cap,” said Tillis, who represents a state where taxpayers don’t use the deduction as much.

WASHINGTON — A massive defense policy bill on track to clear the House on Wednesday includes a ban on gender-affirming care for children of servicemembers — a provision that sparked opposition from the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee. The sweeping must-pass bill — known as the National Defense Authorization Act or NDAA — was negotiated between senior House and Senate lawmakers. “[B]lanketly denying health care to people who need it — just because of a biased notion against transgender people — is wrong,” Smith said in a statement Tuesday. The NDAA, which authorizes appropriations for the Defense Department and sets defense policies, expires at the end of the year. However, House and Senate negotiators couldn't reach agreement on "sufficient pro-life protections," the speaker's office said.

Trump’s pick to lead the Justice Department’s storied Civil Rights Division – conservative San Francisco attorney Harmeet Dhillon – is expected to use the powerful perch to reverse many of the Biden administration’s civil rights initiatives. “The Civil Rights Division’s historical mandate from the beginning was to help fight against othering, was to help fight against societal branding of certain Americans as other,” Levitt said. Created in the 1950s, the Civil Rights Division leads the Justice Department’s enforcement of federal laws intended to combat discrimination in areas such as housing, employment and education. Under Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke’s leadership, the division opened civil rights investigations into a dozen police departments. “If she wins, it’s the end of seniority,” said a House Democrat who has served decades in Congress. Some powerful committee leaders have already stepped aside amid challenges from relatively younger upstarts. The White House said Tuesday that Biden would veto the bill – passed unanimously by the Senate this summer and set for a House vote this week – that would add judgeships to the most overburdened federal courthouses in the country. Judges across the ideological spectrum have warned that staffing shortages have created a major backlog in cases. Democrats are now pointing to House GOP leadership’s failure to do so as reason why they’re reversing their support. Judges – including in interviews with CNN – have said that the judiciary faces a staffing crisis that is undermining litigants’ right to speedy justice. Lawmakers may try to get the bill passed in the new Congress, but getting Democratic support may require delaying the first allocation of new judges until 2029, when White House control will be unknown.
