My family moved to Alaska for my husband's job. We flew to Washington state to receive care and my husband was able to come with us. When my family and I decided to move to Alaska for my husband's job, we didn't know I'd be newly pregnant when we eventually arrived at our island home. But he began to have trouble breathing almost right away, and within a few days, it became clear that our small hospital didn't have the capacity to treat him. AdvertisementWhen it became clear that we'd have to be medically evacuated out of Alaska, Steve left the hospital and packed me a bag.

Footage of the blast emerged as Israel announced plans to double its population in the occupied Golan Heights, citing threats from Syria. Israel occupied the Golan Heights during the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed the roughly 460-square-mile area in 1981 in a unilateral decision that was not recognized by the international community. A teenage boy was jailed on murder charges after, authorities said, he reported killing four members of his family at a New Mexico home Saturday. The 16-year-old boy called 911 at 3:32 a.m. to report the deaths near the small city of Belen, 33 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico State Police said. State police released the identity of the teenager and the victims; however, NBC News does not typically name juveniles accused of crimes. "New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents and Crime Scene Team are processing the scene and conducting interviews to learn what led up to these tragic events," the agency said. After detoxification at a hospital, the teenage suspect was "medically cleared" and booked at the Juvenile Justice Center in Albuquerque early Sunday, police said.

Federal officials have so far downplayed many of the reported sightings, saying they are likely small airplanes or other manned aircraft. Gregory McNeal, a drone expert, told CNN that growing distrust in government communication is fueling demands for greater transparency and accountability from federal officials. Republican Assemblyman Paul Kanitra of New Jersey told CNN’s Sara Sidner Friday there had been drone sightings every night since then. Kanitra said federal officials were losing trust with the American people because several of the drone reports have come from places like military facilities, but federal officials have been dismissive. An FBI official on Saturday noted some drone sightings reported to tip lines were matched to similar flight approach patterns from nearby airports.

Barbara Corcoran has homes all over the country, but the self-made millionaire won't shell out for first class plane tickets to travel between them. "The way I figure it is, a coach ticket [costs] about 25% of a first-class ticket," Corcoran said while appearing on The Jamie Kern Lima Show. For Corcoran, being able to give free trips for her family is more important than being "comfortable in first class" for a few hours. It's not the first time that Corcoran has discussed her frugality when it comes to travel. Speaking to CNBC Make It in 2018, the entrepreneur said she "couldn't fathom justifying" the price tag of a first class or business class ticket.

World’s biggest iceberg, A23a, is on the move again

CNN —The world’s largest iceberg is on the move again, drifting through the Southern Ocean after months stuck spinning on the same spot, scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have said. Spanning an area of 3,672 square kilometers (1,418-square-miles) when measured in August – slightly bigger than Rhode Island – the A23a iceberg has been carefully tracked by scientists ever since it calved from the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf in 1986. A satellite image of the A23a iceberg seen in Antarctica in November 2023. European Union/Copernicus Sentinel-3/ReutersThen, the iceberg was carried away by ocean currents before it became stuck again in a Taylor column – the name given to a spinning vortex of water caused by ocean currents hitting an underwater mountain. A23a has held the “largest current iceberg” title several times since the 1980s, occasionally being surpassed by larger but shorter-lived icebergs, including A68 in 2017 and A76 in 2021.

CNN —Thousands of ancient butchered human bones found in a deep shaft in southwest England have pointed archaeologists to a grim chapter of British prehistory that occurred during the Early Bronze Age. There, researchers unearthed piles of buried human bones, mixed in with cattle bones, that told the story of mass violence striking an ancient community. What’s more, the extreme manner in which the remains were handled is beyond what Schulting and his colleagues have seen from remains of ancient animals who were butchered. “The location itself may be the common denominator; the natural shaft and large underlying cave system inviting comparisons with a portal to the underworld,” the study authors wrote. The researchers don’t believe the people were killed as food due to starvation, given the abundant amount of cattle bones found mixed in with the human bones.

CNN —Ukraine said on Monday that North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian troops suffered heavy losses during fighting at the weekend in the Russian region of Kursk. North Korean units that arrived in Kursk last month were involved in assaults at the weekend near three villages, according to Ukraine’s defense intelligence service. Since the beginning of December, North Korean troops appear to have been playing a more prominent role on the front lines in Kursk, especially as infantry. Ukraine estimates that about 12,000 North Korean soldiers are in the region trying to assist Russian units in recovering parts of Kursk taken in a Ukrainian offensive in August. Butusov said that North Korean infantry was backed by “massive fire support” from Russian units, as well as electronic warfare against Ukrainian drones.

And more increases appear to be coming down the pike for the pulped-paper-packed protein: Wholesale prices for chicken eggs soared by nearly 55% last month, and wholesale food prices rose by 3.1% (their highest monthly increase in two years). “Overall grocery price inflation is relatively tame; it’s essentially in line with where it was before the pandemic … nothing alarming,” said Gregory Daco, EY Parthenon’s chief economist. Through November, grocery prices were up 1.6% from the year before, according to the latest CPI report. That breakneck pace resulted in grocery prices being 27% higher now than they were in February 2020, before the onset of the pandemic in the US. “That’s the difficult part — you’re unlikely to see food prices fall significantly and revert to 2019 levels,” Daco said.
