CNN —The US Secret Service is scrambling to increase security ahead of former President Donald Trump’s first campaign rally since the failed assassination attempt on his life last week, sources familiar with the planning told CNN. “We assist the Secret Service,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told CNN, adding that the Secret Service was leading all security planning for the rally. The source said the lack of these exercises have resulted in security gaps, including communication breakdowns between law enforcement partners. “The Secret Service is responsible for the security planning for presidential visits, but we stand ready to assist them with whatever they need,” Banner wrote in an email. The Secret Service would not comment on security planning for the rally or Trump.

In the aftermath of Katrina, the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act of 2006 was passed. However, development and implementation of pet evacuation and sheltering plans during disasters remains widely insufficient, if it is even addressed at all. At least 15 states do not have any provisions for the evacuation, rescue and recovery of pets during disasters, according to Michigan State University’s Animal Law and History Web Center. More commonly, pet owners will sneak back into active evacuation sites to rescue their pets, risking injury and even death. Allowing pet owners to evacuate their animals may prevent significant psychological distress and can strengthen the emotional resiliency of evacuees.

The pardon won’t automatically change the record of convicted veterans, but it will allow them to apply for a certificate that will help them receive withheld benefits. “Our nation’s service members stand on the frontlines of freedom, and risk their lives in order to defend our country. Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQI+ service members were forced out of the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” Biden said. A service member’s discharge status can determine what Veterans Affairs benefits they are eligible for. To get their records changed under the pardon, veterans will need to complete an online application, which will go to their military service department.

Differences like these lead researchers like me to wonder what factors influence the telling of lies. Figuring out the frequency of liesMost research on lying asks participants to self-report their lying behavior, say during the past day or week. This result became the benchmark finding in the field of honesty research and helped lead to an assumption among many researchers that lying is commonplace. It could be that each person in the group tells one or two lies per day. Many lies occur in the heat of the moment, so it makes sense that when there’s a delay in communication, as with email, lying would decrease.

While a growing body of research shows decreases in many insect populations, it has been hard for scientists to disentangle the possible causes. Are insects suffering from habitat loss as natural areas are plowed and paved? The latest insight comes from a study on butterflies in the Midwest, published on Thursday in the journal PLOS ONE. Especially detrimental, the researchers found, was a class of widely used insecticides called neonicotinoids that are absorbed into the tissues of plants. “It’s a story about unintended consequences,” said Scott Swinton, a professor of agricultural economics at Michigan State University and one of the study’s authors.

Read previewThe prominence of school vouchers continues to surge across the country — but they might not benefit the families who need them the most. Over the past few years, states like Ohio and Arkansas have expanded their school voucher programs to allow most or all parents to receive funding to send their kids to private schools. The modern school voucher movement started to grow in the 1990s under the idea that the government would give parents a certain amount of money to put toward private school tuition. A new report from the Brookings Institution delved further into the implications of Arizona's voucher program.
