Electric vehicle startup Lucid Group is counting on its upcoming Gravity SUV to assist the automaker in a "significant increase" in sales volumes to narrow the company's losses, according to CEO Peter Rawlinson. The Gravity is Lucid's second vehicle following the Air sedan, which the luxury EV manufacturer has been selling in relatively small numbers since late 2021. Lucid on Tuesday said customer ordering for the first Gravity model, called the Grand Touring, will open Nov. 7 on the carmaker's website. Other models are expected to follow, including an entry-level $79,900 Gravity Touring trim late next year. "We believe there's about a 6-to-1 ratio … for the SUV over sedan, and that's going to put us in a very strong position."

DETROIT — Investors misinterpreted a public offering last week by Lucid Group that raised roughly $1.75 billion — and led to the stock's worst daily performance in nearly three years — CEO Peter Rawlinson told CNBC. It also should alleviate worries that the company would issue a "going concern" disclosure regarding its operations, he said. As a Nasdaq company, we have to avoid a going concern. And a going concern is issued within 12 months of your financial runway," Rawlinson said Monday from the company's newly opened offices in suburban Detroit. That included more than $4 billion in cash, cash equivalents and investment balances.

DETROIT — General Motors has agreed to establish a joint venture with Lithium Americas Corp. that includes the automaker supplying $625 million in cash and credit to the Canadian mining business, the companies announced Wednesday. The deal is centered on the development, construction and operation of a lithium carbonate mining operation called Thacker Pass in Humboldt County, Nevada. Securing raw materials such as lithium from the U.S. is crucial to GM's plans to profitably grow its all-electric vehicle business to meet tightening federal requirements of the vehicles and the large batteries needed to power them. "Sourcing critical EV raw materials, like lithium, from suppliers in the U.S., is expected to help us manage battery cell costs, deliver value to our customers and investors, and create jobs."

DETROIT — A growing number of Americans with auto loans owe more than their vehicles are worth, according to a report Tuesday from Edmunds.com. Upside-down car loans aren't necessarily dire on their own, but a growing number of consumers being underwater is another indication of pressure on American consumers. Edmunds reports more than one in five consumers with negative equity owe more than $10,000 on their auto loans. That includes 22% of vehicle owners with negative equity who owed $10,000 or more, while 7.5% have negative equity of more than $15,000. Consumers can counter upside-down car loans by holding onto the vehicles for longer periods.

Aside from EVs, GM touted its lowering capital costs and the company’s flexibility to produce both traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines and EVs. Shares of GM were roughly level aside from a roughly 3% increase during the beginning of the event. The change to Ultium comes after GM spent billions of dollars to develop in-house “Ultium” batteries and technologies that the automaker previously touted as “revolutionary” and the ultimate technologies to be able to build a profitable EV business. The company said the batteries and the technologies will remain, but the name “Ultium” will not, other than production operations such as its “Ultium Cells” joint venture plants with LG Energy Solution. GM has been rethinking its EV battery strategy amid changing market conditions and an influx of new, outside executives, including Tesla veterans JP Clausen, who now leads GM manufacturing, and Kurt Kelty, GM’s vice president of battery.

GM's investor day showcased many of the company's current achievements, but did not provide much insight on strategy," Bernstein analyst Daniel Roeska wrote Wednesday in an investor note. "GM's Investor Day yesterday didn't provide much in the way of sharp shifts in strategy. GM's 2024 financial guidance includes anticipated capital spending of between $10.5 billion and $11.5 billion. DETROIT — General Motors expects its 2025 adjusted earnings to be in a "similar range" to the company's results this year, CFO Paul Jacobson said Tuesday during the company's investor day. Jacobson declined to provide specific financial targets until the company formally releases its 2025 financial guidance early next year. DETROIT — A lot has changed since General Motors' last investor day two years ago, but one thing that hasn't is the automaker's ability to outperform Wall Street's expectations — doing so every quarter since then. "Accordingly, whereas the theme for GM three years ago was "Growth Motors," we believe the theme today is "praGMatic Motors." To underscore that effort, the event is taking place GM's vehicle assembly and Ultium EV battery plants in Tennessee. Barra and other executives have stressed such a dual strategy since lowering or withdrawing nearly all of the company's EV targets amid slower than expected adoption of electric vehicles. "We are making the most of every opportunity we have in ICE and in EV and leveraging our core strengths," Barra said during the company's second-quarter investor call in July.

DETROIT — General Motors has temporarily halted vehicle production at two U.S. factories that assemble highly profitable large pickups and SUVs due to impacts to suppliers as a result of Hurricane Helene. A GM spokeswoman declined to speculate on when the plants were expected to restart production as of Friday morning. Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida late last week and hit the southeastern United States and parts of western North Carolina particularly hard. Shares of Rivian Automotive dropped about 8% during premarket trading Friday after the electric vehicle startup delivered fewer vehicles in the third quarter than analysts had expected and lowered its annual production forecast for 2024. The company said the lower production target — down from 57,000 units to between 47,000 and 49,000 — was because of a "production disruption due to a shortage of a shared component" for its R1 vehicles and commercial van. "This supply shortage impact began in Q3 of this year, has become more acute in recent weeks and continues. As a result of the supply shortage, Rivian is revising its annual production guidance to be between 47,000 and 49,000 vehicles," the company said in a statement. A Rivian spokesman said the component causing the problem is part of its in-house motors, but he declined to disclose any further details.

A supermajority of UAW members at Stellantis' Los Angeles Parts Distribution Center voted to request strike authorization from the International Executive Board if the company and union can't reconcile, the union said Friday morning. The lawsuit argues that if the union does strike, the court "should award Stellantis monetary damages" that result from a breach of contract. UAW President Shawn Fain has routinely said the union will strike if needed, however Stellantis has argued that would be unlawful under the contract. The lawsuit came the same day Fain and union members held their latest rally against Stellantis in suburban Detroit. Stellantis, in the lawsuit, called the grievances a sham designed to "justify mid-contract strikes against Stellantis that otherwise would violate the [contract's] no strike clause."

All of Stellantis’ brands except for its niche Fiat unit experienced sales declines in the third quarter, led by more than 40% reductions for Chrysler and Dodge.
